Geo: 51.179, -1.82872It takes much dedication to rise at an early hour to go see some very large rocks arranged in a mysterious pattern. We did it. Bath (Baath) is about an hour from Stonehenge and we had a personal appointment to get up close and personal with these rocks. If you contact the National Trust and fill out some paperwork you can make an appointment to go inside the fence and stand amongst the stones. This I highly recommend. There is no longer a chain link fence but you are kept a distance away if you don't make an appointment. Stonehenge is not a big circle but the stones themselves are huge. So many questions fly through your mind as you look at these rocks. How, why, how, why..... We can only speculate the answers.3000 ... read more

There's nothing like standing in a windy field with about 300 other people staring at some rocks except Stonehenge. Nice if they had finished it and put up a roof but otherwise I give the English an 'A' for effort. Hauling these rocks 384km from the coast was obviously the original 'Rock & Roll' so I imagine it was the thing to do on a Saturday night back in 3000BC. Unfortunately, no matter how drunk you get, pushing a big rock for a 1000 years will tire out even the most hardcore 'rockers' so I really can't blame them. After our pilgrimage to 'the henge', we wanted to check out Bath, because apparantly there is a massive one of those there, (the English are renowed for their imaginative names) Unfortunately, a really big traffic jam finished ... read more

So after renting our car. We drove down to Stonehenge. Now we thought that you were able to go and walk all about in the stones well at least that was my intention. To our dissapointment you have to set up a private access tour which is either when the close or when they open. So we did out little walk around with audio tour handset. One cool thing is that Stonehenge is like a massive sun and moon dial. It can show you when it's the summer Soltice or winter for example. Then two myths that they have are that one Merlin hired giants to bring the stones and set the up but, because the giants were so lazy Merlin decided to use magic and have them all placed there. The other myth is that ... read more

In late August, I have been Stonehenge and Cambridge with my primary schoolmate, Ester, and her husband. How lucky I was in catching up the couple during their first-ever trip to Europe. Stonehenge is one of the must-go attractions in UK and I have been admiring to go there since I was young. We first arrived in Salisbury, a cozy little town, by an hour train ride from London, than took a bus to Stonehenge. Though Salisbury is a stop-over place, but it is worth visiting. You can find the old city walls and a magnificent normandic Salisbury Cathedral lying in the middle of a gorgeous park, which will definitely catch your breathes! Stonehenge is located in an outskirt but it is not difficult to recognize those huge and gigantic stones standing straight from far away. ... read more

Ok, so I figure I may as well get as much use out of the free internet at the hotel as I can...besides which it's raining...again..... so can't do a whole lot. Just went to the pub for dinner again and it's about 9.00pm here. becoming a local down there! cheap food and beer (for London) and cozy, mind you full of non locals which is no good!! Lots of families and too far to walk to the other one in this weather. Went on a day tour to Stonehenge & Bath today. Rained all day. When we finally got to Stonehenge and we drove up the driveway I'm thinking, is this it? Took a whole 15 minutes to walk around and even then I tried to slow down however after seeing the same rocks ... read more

Stonehenge, Salisbury & Winchester Europe » United Kingdom » England » Stonehenge By USinUKJuly 12th 2007 Today we started very early. We had a private access tour at Stonehenge at 6:15 am, so we left the hotel at 5am. And it was a very dreary morning, with rain on and off. The tour allowed us to go right into the stone circles and walk around an touch the stones - normally you can just view them from about 100 feet away. A sunny morning would have been nice, but... it was way, way, cool. Next was Salisbury, where we parked the car and promptly slept or tried to sleep for two hours. We went to the Salisbury Cathedral... read more

Jay and I have been looking forward to seeing Stonehenge for years. I'd been telling my art appreciation students about the history of the place - there were actually three different versions (formations of stone) in history and a wooden version (Woodhenge) before that. I felt like a bit of a fraud telling people about a place I had never seen. We now had our chance. The rolling hills of around Stonehenge have so many shades of green. Some of the fields are planted with barley and wheat. Small herds of sheep and horses dot the countryside. The stones looks huge and looming from the road. We followed the sign and pulled into the parking lot. There were tour buses and people standing around, blocking the parking lot. We waited in line to pay the entrance ... read more

We rose early for a pre-planned bus (*shudder*) day-trip out to Windsor Castle, Bath & Stonehenge. Our tour guide, Deborah, was an absolute classic and knew London (and England) extremely well and kept us entertained the whole day. First stop was Windsor Castle, which was a grand old castle with a fantastic collection of old weaponry, art and other royal paraphernalia. It was great to go into the rooms where the Queen actually entertains guests to this day! Our next stop was Bath, which is famous for the ancient Bath built there when the Romans discovered a hot spring. A lot of the bath is still in good condition (except the water is a nice murky green) and was fascinating to walk around. Our final port of call was the iconic Stonehenge! We were both really ... read more
