Steve and Kim Skinner

We are former Travelpod members looking for a new home. Travelblog feels like home.

We are a couple of middle-aged mid-westerners that love to experience the world. We love food and drink and getting as close to the locals as they will allow. :-)

Happy travels!

After the thrilling visit to Kimberely we went to the airport early because there was nothing else for us to do. The Kimberely airport is tiny. One small café and seating for 50 people. That is, it. Wouldn’t you know it…. Our flight to Johannesburg was delayed due to rain storms. Then delayed again. We finally got on board and got to our guest house close by the Johannesburg airport after 11 pm. We had a short night sleep and were up early to be picked up for the 4-hour drive to start our safari. The gentlemen that picked us up was named Daz. He was great. He talked to us the whole trip about South Africa and what we were seeing on the trip. He is a true wealth of information. We finally arrived at ... read more

Africa » South Africa » Western Cape » Cape of Good Hope September 27th 2017

The last entry was a lot of words.. this one will be a lot of pictures. Steve and I rented a car and drove down the Cape Peninsula. We stopped off at several points along the way. I’ll try to put a map on this post to show where we went. In total, the journey took us about seven hours. The Cape peninsula is so beautiful. The oceans surrounding are both tranquil and violent. I’m not able to upload videos to this site so I have included links below to some videos we took. You may want to turn the volume down on your computer as the wind is really loud. Did you know that Africa has penguins? We got to see them. Unfortunately, we couldn’t touch them but they were very close. Due to the ... read more

This is a long one. Get a cup of coffee and settle in for a read! We arrived in Cape Town exhausted but it was 11:30am… ugh. We grabbed an Uber (yes, there is Uber in Cape Town) and headed to our Airbnb. Check in was easy and Jan our host was great. The apartment was in the city center near the Parliament. Jan gave us some tips on where to go for provisions and reminded us that tomorrow is a holiday and most places will be closed…. Great. Well, everything was closed that day as well. It was Sunday. We will have to go out tomorrow morning to find breakfast. Before long we landed at Beer House. We sampled some local beers and had a bite. By about 3pm we got a second wind that ... read more

Middle East » United Arab Emirates » Dubai September 25th 2017

We boarded our plane in Los Angeles at about 4pm PST. We landed in Dubai at 7 something pm local time... the next day... ugh! 15 hours sitting. Spotty sleep at best. Airplane air. The type of tired we were experiencing at that point was somewhat normal jet lag. We had an 8 hour lay over and had no plans to sleep. We flew Emirates which was AMAZING. Talk about the best long haul airline. And so many bonuses... like the seat between us was empty so we could spread out a bit. Also Emirates offers Dubai connect for long lay overs in the city of gold. Dubai connect gets you a free hotel room and meal. Not a 5 star joint by any means but a room, with a shower and bed!! And a free ... read more

Geo: 18.4672, -66.1179Since we had to fly through San Juan to and from the BVI we decided to spend a little time in Puerto Rico. We arrived from the airport, went right to the apartment and dropped our bags. I had read about a beach near the capital building in San Juan that was loaded with beach glass. We freshened up and got a cab to the beach. It was a beautiful beach on a beautiful afternoon. The shoes came off and we were soon staring at the sand walking down the beach. We spent about and hour and had a huge bag full of beach glass. Even a few small pieces of blue (rare) glass. From the beach we headed into Old San Juan. Oh the tourists. There was a huge cruise ship in port ... read more

Geo: 18.43, -64.63You are not going to believe this.... until you see the pictures! For many, many years I have filled out the entries for Budget Travel Sweepstakes. They raffle off trips to random places around the globe. One month I got the new one and it was for the British Virgin Islands. Of course I filled it out. While I was filling it out I remember thinking to myself "I don't know why I fill these things out....I never win". Well, several months later I got an email from Budget Travel saying they had been trying to get a hold of me. Please call us. So I called and I was told over the phone that I won. Ever the skeptic I keep thinking this is some kind of a scam. After what seemed like ... read more

Geo: 32.7157, -117.162We landed at LAX on time but due to not enough gates we sat on the runway for 55 min waiting for our gate to open. We had just enough time to get back to my Dad's, have a quick bite to eat grab the dog and race back to San Diego to meet the Mustangs being delivered. Done!... read more

Geo: 42.1498, -83.2662The morning after the wedding we had breakfast with the family and then started the drive south. On our way home we stopped in Brighton to see or friend Laura and her family. We had not seen Laura and Pat in years and their kids had gotten so big. It was great to catch up with and spend a little time with them. We continued on back to Kim's parents home and got up at 3 am for our flight back home. It was a great trip and we completed everything we planned to do.... read more

Geo: 44.76, -85.6159We drove from Charlevoix to Traverse City for the wedding. We had booked a great "Up North" cabin very close to the wedding venue. We got to the venue in time to help do a little set up and be there for the rehearsal. After the rehearsal we went to North Peak Brewery for the rehearsal dinner. They had a great IPA on cask that was tasty and impressive. After the dinner we went back to the hotel where Kim's family were staying and had a bonfire on the beach and made s'mores. The next day we had some time before the wedding so we relaxed by walking around down town Traverse City, having a few beers. We went back to the cabin where we took a row boat out on the lake just ... read more
