Ok, so I figure I may as well get as much use out of the free internet at the hotel as I can...besides which it's raining...again..... so can't do a whole lot. Just went to the pub for dinner again and it's about 9.00pm here. becoming a local down there! cheap food and beer (for London) and cozy, mind you full of non locals which is no good!! Lots of families and too far to walk to the other one in this weather.
Went on a day tour to Stonehenge & Bath today. Rained all day. When we finally got to Stonehenge and we drove up the driveway I'm thinking, is this it? Took a whole 15 minutes to walk around and even then I tried to slow down however after seeing the same rocks from 4 different angles and listening to the worst English commentary possible, I'd had enough as well as being drenched by this stage. I have to say completely unimpressed and that's being nice!
These Americans on the bus were saying how it was their favourite part...I felt like saying who hasn't seen a bunch of rocks before? So what if they are chucked
on top of each other. I'd rather have bought 2 pints for my $7 pounds or whatever it cost! Someone has been very smart working out suckers like us will pay to see some rocks. Boy are we stupid. It's so much smaller than in pictures. Ripped off I reckon!
So finally we moved onto Bath and took the English country side as our route and it was lovely. Went through the Ministry of Defence land and 2 massive army helicopters, like the ones used in combat to transport troops flew right over low over the top of us which was pretty cool!
Now given I did a double major in Ancient Rome at college for 2 years, one would assume I knew what Bath was going to be like...little did I know. I had imagined, and I'm not afriad to say it, a paddock with some ruins in it, pretty much like Stongehenge...well didn't I get the shock of my life!! It's huge and so pretty. I loved it.
Went to the Roman baths of course which was just great and then we had free time so I wandered for ages down the river and up
into the houses on the hill and around town. Shame it wasn't a nicer day cause it would have just been such a good place to walk in warmer weather. Instead, got even more drenched and was trying to keep the camera dry! But didn't matter too much had a really nice time there. Went to a cafe for a hot chocolate and I saw Keith Richards twin brother...scary!!!! Oh and I bought a skirt...yes I know I shouldnt be clothes shopping but I ran intot eh door way to get out of the rain and low & behold...it was a clothes shop having a sale and this skirt was calling my name!! I was hoping it didn't fit, but it did so I had to buy it. More crap to carry around!!
The bus ride back took flippin ages, so much traffic, I don't know how they do it, and they are all crazy drivers, especially the motorcyclists!
Am staying in Henry VIII hotel in Leinster Gardens which is right opposite Hyde Park on Bayswater road on the way to Notting Hill. Lovely little place but wierd breakfasts. Who eats cold meat, cheese, salad and rice for
breakfast?!! Not me!! I stuck to good old bacon & eggs & baked beans! Mind you the bacon tasted like roast pork crackling which I love, but a bit freaky for breakfast bacon! Oh we saw this organic pig farm on the way and the pigs were bloody huge, like the size of cows! Freaky!
Has been a long day in the rain, am sure to sleep well tonight before I head for Ireland tomorrow. Am so looking forward to that and getting out of here...hopefully there won't be so many Americans there...I have met waaaay too many Texans here already and my ears are starting to bleed!
Ok so am preparing for a big week coming up by having a reasonably early night tonight. I'm such a nana but I was up just after 6 this morning so that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!
Will add a few pictures I took today just so you know I really am here!!
