Thursday October 18th We awoke to another magical day, blue sky, but cold! Rags reckons it’s the first time this trip he has felt it. He’d better get used to it! Today we again headed in a northerly direction, this time to Bury St Edmunds. This town dates back over 5 centuries and was the shrine of St Edmund, the patron saint of England before St George took that title. On the way we stopped at Hedingham Castle but, as we were too early, it was not open. Rags did manage to scramble up a steep slope and take some photos of the exterior but we would like to return to see more. Bury St Edmunds was a navigator’s nightmare and we ended up parking in the centre with only 1 hour allowed. This only gave ... read more

So if you're reading this as soon as the email arrived, I'm on my way to the airport, probably arriving rather early, but I don't wanna miss this! If you are receiving an update email for the first time, I've added your name to the email circulation list (as I understand it it's not used for anything else) as you've said 'keep in touch' at some point, and this is my No. 1 method of keeping in touch! If you don't want to receive them, there's an unsubscribe on every email!Meanwhile, here's how I spent the last week... Sunday Arriving back from London, I went straight to Laxfield Flower Festival, with Libby Purves speaking on tolerance. Monday 3rd Rabies injection. Hours on Xe.c... read more

Let's see how I will be able to tackle this modern technology. I'm off to visit my friend Brenda in the States on Tuesday. Great! Thanks Marni for getting me started, sitting at home hoping this will work. Will be nice to keep in touch with friends and family, wonder if they will be impressed, I know I will. O.K - enough of this, plenty to do yet, disorganised as usual. Next location??????!!!!!!!... read more

OK, so I've still not added the text to all my Oak Hall trips - that was a hectic month, good, but hectic! The last 2.5 weeks have disappeared in a whirl of trying to work out what to pack (and more importantly, what not to pack!) within the limits set for certain sectors of the journey (15kg + day-pack), and the recomendations that even if you could, you wouldn't want to carry more... although I don't intend to go as far as the guy on one of the travel forums who cuts the handle off his toothbrush to ensure that he has less weight! The Oak Hall trips, however, have helped give me some idea of what I really do need and, although it's just Europe, given me some more experience of travelling... So, the ... read more

Okay, I tink I'm gunna use this site for my log of the forthcoming journey cos the MYspace one is very limited and I keep losin my entries, and all the others seem to require a degree in computer science to understand. So here I am and here I'm gunna stay. Unless of course this is a lot more complicated than it appears! Its raining, cos, well, its England. But after a restless night of tossing and turning, of avoiding zombies and mutant giant dogs the size of cows in some kinda Dawn of the Dead dream, I woke up thinking about my visa to India. I had sent it off Aug 14th and no sign...and so no visa....no entry and a canceled air ticket and all manner of annoying stuff. But hey, there on the ... read more

Another dash home, another pile of things to sort out. Managed to get my car into the garage, and had the back brakes repaired, fortunately under £100. Finally, 23rd July, managed to pick up Harry Potter 7, started reading 7.30pm, finished 3.30am (well, I had to find out, and no, I won’t be writing any spoilers (although watch out for some in the link), although I’m not quite sure what I think of the ending…). Right, well there might be some more to add here, but otherwise my plans before heading off on my itinerary before getting on a Qantas Boeing 747 at 10.15pm on Friday 28th September is as follows: 28th July - 6th August, Obergesteln, Switzerland. Cooking in a chalet for Oak Hall. 7th -... read more

This was a great couple of weeks, as we finally, finally have broadband, and wireless broadband at that, so not quite sure where the weeks disappeared, but lots of 4am finishes as I worked my way through a number of things that had been piling up, and did lots of trip research. Got plenty of time on Facebook which I find great for keeping in touch, and making me feel that I am not entirely isolated in the middle of the country. Asked i-to-i for the monies back, and then came up with my ultimate RTW trip. Decided to go for it, although would be more expensive than anticipated - just means might put the pressure on more to get the next job! Had quite a bit of correspondence with STA in Manchester - Chris is ... read more

24th May: The frustration with the phone line continues - apparently BT needs to dig up a main road somewhere, and paperwork being what it is, they don’t expect the phone to be back on until 20th July, which seems unbelievable, but at least we know where we stand now. Enjoyed the luxury of reading a Cathy Kelly novel (these Irish chick-lit writers are very enjoyable!), before deciding must get some fresh air, so a good long-walk, and then writing up travelblog entries until late… 25th May: Quik Pod arrived in the post. Saw this featured in the Times travel section a few weeks ago, then after a quick search with Pricerunner, found it on url=http://... read more

A decent stint in Suffolk this time, and moved on with a lot more TEFL work (thanks to Tim/Nat for letting me use their computer, as our phone line started misbehaving whilst I was in London, and still wasn’t fixed when I headed off again). I completed a lot of work on my book chapter - collating all the material into one document under sub-headings, so that I have the basic structure of my chapter in place, although I wouldn’t say that any of it was yet WRITTEN as such! Bank Holiday Monday ended up on a very long cycle ride in pursuit of the Guardian - determined to keep up with the Media pages at the moment… left it a bit late in the day to start looking, but ran it down in Harleston’s garage, ... read more
