With two days till lift off my life revolves around the bathroom scales in my room, lonely planet roadmap and the Australian visa service. The Quantas economy tickets that I’m flying with allow 20kgs of baggage, a bit on an issue as my kitesurfing kit is 21kgs. The solution involved a phone call to Quantas head office, I managed to convince a nice gall there that kitesurfing kit should be counted a sporting equipment and classed as say a sailboard. So hopefully I should be able to take all that kit free of charge! Jim and I have been studying the roadmaps of Ozz, along with google earth, kitebeach.com and kiteforum. Were planning a week and a bit around Sydney, the hunter valley where Jim worked, and north of sydders at Seal Rocks where there are ... read more

That's what was printed on the sign. I lost track of which sign as I saw it everywhere I turned. My heart sank each time with the first time being the worst. I was at Christ Church College. This is the most famous or at least the most famous sounding college at Oxford University. Oxford, so said something I read, is the oldest English-language university in the world - some 800 years old. I came around a corner with great anticipation. I had spent enough time in the cathedral at Christ Church that the January chill was mostly gone. I was ready to spend an hour browsing the shelves, looking through the card catalog (electronic or paper), trying to find some of my favorite volumes, and looking for that something that I didn't expect. That ... read more

So I finally got all my class schedules and what not worked out. It seems that the rest of the group is on their way to getting that done as well. I’m surprised by the amount of complications this has caused because I would have thought that in an international program things would have been much more better coordinated and thought out. I’m a little aggravated because we weren’t supposed to have classes on Friday and now I definitely do. I had to change my tutorial concentration around a bit so that the credits would transfer properly and unfortunately, I was assigned to a tutor who only works on Fridays because he doesn’t live directly in Oxford. Luckily I was able to talk him into meeting with me early, however, so my class is only from ... read more

The more I hang around England the more I wonder whether we are actually in fact, HATED by the rest of the world and everyone is out to get us or whether the people we have run into just seem to be ignorant and not know what is going on. The other evening we had a very nice welcome dinner at one of the neighboring colleges, St. Hughes. It was a 'business attire' event with catered food and fancy table settings. The food was really very good, especially the chocolate torte that it ended with and because we were divided into tables we got to meet with various other students at St. Clare's. I would say we all had a good time and made a couple of new friends while we were there. The dinner ended ... read more

Our White Xmas trip would not have been possible without the support of friends in the UK, who put us up and entertained us when we weren't somewhere else. We are also grateful to the A&E staff at Stoke-Mandeville General Hospital, who replaced Elaine's cast so that we could get home without too much distress. ... read more

So yesterday at City Center we went to this noodle house asian-esque restaurant for lunch... the prices were fair... about ten dollars a plate... but in order to re-hydrate myself from the walk I decided to order a glass of water. When I was asked, "still or mineral" I assumed that still meant exactly that... still water... water... plain, clean, cold, still, chilled, and CHEAP.... BOY WAS I WRONG.... only after I received the water from the waitress did we realize this water we ordered was TWO DOLLARS! Yes, that's right, TWO DOLLARS! My hydrating water cost MORE than a coke! How do you go and figure that... I later decided that they must do this because the water here is not the best to drink from tap... and sure they might be saving me from ... read more

Today was the only day that we've had any AWAKE free time since we've been here. So in light of that we decided to make the most of it and get all of our errands done. Of course because of the time difference both Emily and I cannot seem to sleep for the life of us and at 5:00 this morning I hear here whisper, "Tanya" and nearly fall out of my bed as I don't expect her to be awake laying in bed frustrated and bored just as I am. So instead of wasting the day staring at the bland ceiling and the porcelein chandeliers we decide to get an early start. We walk up to the local grocer where we find that this country doesn't make any sense. You have to pay for SHOPPING ... read more

I just finished unpacking and am in bed trying to fall asleep but I'm not that tired because after we got to school me and Emily took a nap for a little bit. We are living in this place called, "Hambden Manor", which is a little while from the school and a bit outside Oxford. It's not exactly walking distance but since we're the furthest residence we get a free bus pass which is cool because then we can go around Oxford whenever we want and just hop on a bus without paying. The rooms are pretty awesome. I don't think they were supposed to but the people here ended up rooming me and Emily together which I'm really happy about because it's just more comfortable and makes me feel more secure with all my stuff. ... read more

First of, I have left London. I turned my back on the city that constantly penalised me wherever I drove, if it’s not bus lanes then its parking, if is not parking it is egger cameras at ‘yellow’ lights. The worst is getting a parking ticket for not properly displaying my residents parking permit (the wiper obscured the date apparently!). So I have 3 ongoing cases with various London borough councils, I’m dam well going to get some letters out of my fines if nothing else! But that’s not really the reason I’ve left the big smoke, though finances are a major factor. Not paying a London rent is blissful! I’m off to Australia at the beginning of February. I know this leaving the country for somewhere warm lark is becoming the trend of my life! ... read more
