Let's see...it's been ten days since my last entry. And I feel like I've done quite a bit in that amount of time. So, here we go... Over last weekend, we went dancing twice at the Purple Turtle. It is becoming my favorite place to go because we always have a good time dancing there. As you all know, I'm not a very good dancer in any way, shape or form, but I'm trying to learn to dance. As a part of this quest, I went to a social dance lesson with my friend John Paul on Monday night. It was about a 30 minute walk from St. Michael's Hall (which I stupidly did in heels), followed by an hour long Samba lesson (again in heels), and the night ended in another 30 minute walk in ... read more

Today was delightful! I actually woke up in time for breakfast AND the milk nazi didn't scold us for drinking a lot of milk. That was a brilliant start to the day. Actually, the milk nazi wasn't around at all today...it was glorious. By the way, the milk nazi is this woman who works in the dining hall and refuses to let us have milk at lunch and dinner. She literally stands in front of the milk machine and will not let us drink any. So, we take great pride in getting all the milk we can when she isn't looking or isn't around. Anyways, it's always a good day when she isn't there. Our lectures today were pretty good as well. The second lecturer, Richard Cross, was amazing. He talked to us like adults, asked ... read more

Today we had a full day tour booked to Oxford, Stratford, Warwick Castle and Cotswold’s Tour, we were meant to go to Blenheim Palace but the tour was canned. First stop was Warwick Castle, where we found out just how mean and nasty they were with regard to torture. Some of the items they used were brutal, some either stretched you, used for restricting you so they could burn you with molten lead, drop you from the roof with weights on your feet to dislocate you. I know, it makes you sick!! After here we headed through the Cotswold’s to Stratford where we saw Shakespeare’s birthplace, and wandered through the family home. We headed to Oxford via a pub lunch, meal was beautiful!! At Oxford, we ventured into Christ Church College, where parts of the Harry ... read more

I believe that the people from Oxford should receive the New Zealand prize for literal naming. We are proud of our naming abilities. We have: One Tree Hill: so called because it had... one tree North Island: because, you know, it's North. I'm sure we can all think of many other examples. However years before we even got going on the literal naming thing which we mark as part of our national identity, the people of Oxford were well ahead of us. Incidentally the name Oxford is a prime example, you see, there was a lot of Oxen in the area and only one part of the river where you could ford them... yes, they called that spot Oxford. When they built "the College of St Mary" it turned out that they already had a "College ... read more

Well, let's see, I've definitely enjoyed this first week in Oxford. I haven't done all that much, but, even so, it's been great. We've gone on two field trips already. Our first one was last Sunday (September 3rd) and we went to Glocester Cathedral and Berkeley Castle. Both places were so beautiful. Glocester Cathedral had some of the most amazing stained glass I've ever seen. On Wednesday, which happened to be our longest field trip and my birthday, we went to Wells Cathedral and Glastonbury Abbey. I'm starting to realize that cathedrals are all very beautiful, but also very similiar. But, the best part of Wednesday was that we did a drive by (literally, we just drove by) of Stonehenge. I wish we could have stopped, but even so I was still able to take a ... read more

I left for Oxford, England on Thursday, August 31, 2006. Mom, Dad, and Lauren took me to the San Francisco International Airport to see me off. While in the car, my mom presented me with a gift. She and Lauren had worked very hard to make me a pillowcase filled with pictures of my friends, family, and even my favorite poem. I was speechless because I realized that I didn’t bring any pictures in either of my two very large bags. Of course they are on my computer, but it is not the same as having them printed out. The pillowcase is amazing and I kept it in my carry-on bag so I could admire it and brag about it to my friends. Once in the airport, the line for checking in was extremely long. Lauren ... read more

I realise fully that I am writing this blog completely out of sequence (writing about a European city along with blogging on Kerala after my re-location to these shores for at least a few years) but my 24 long years at Oxford has undoubtedly made me fall in love with this magical city and hecne these few lines on Oxford! Oxford in England is undoubtedly the oldest university in the english speaking world and has been in continued existance for more than 9 centuries now. As an internationally known centre of education, it naturally attracts students and scholors from right accross the globe. It lies about 90 kms north-west of London. A medium sized city with population totalling approximately 140,000, Oxford is refreshingly different from all other cities I am lucky enough to have visited so ... read more

Well, this is just going to be a brief post about my last week here and to say good bye! This week has been pretty relaxed, other than the fact that there was studying for finals to be done... Both of the finals went well, I think. Both of them were essay-style, to give you insight into what they were about, I wrote 4 page essays about the following topics: 1) How has Blair perpetuated the economic policies begun by Margaret Thatcher? 2) "To stand apart from the Euro...would be a betrayal of national interests." - Tony Blair. Discuss. 3) Have multinational enterprises had a detrimental effect on world welfare? 4) Has aid been successful? Right now I am officially done with class, so that makes me really happy! We had our fair share of excitement ... read more

Well, I decided it is about time for a post about what things have been like here in Oxford... This might be kind of random, as it will just be covering a few events from the last week and a half. First of all, the weather this week has been drastically different from the first week. I have been wearing my jacket every day, all the time because it is quite cool and windy here. Additionally, it is pretty much always overcast and rains about once a day (though not usually really hard or for very long at once.) It is nice having the cooler (and much more Oxford-typical) weather...it makes for much nicer sleeping conditions!! Two Wednesdays ago we went to Sandown Park, which is one of the larger horseracing tracks in the UK. It ... read more

Well, I made it to Oxford safely! Today was my second day of classes, and I think that they will be a lot of fun. Our two professors are both very competent, and yet they both have an amusing sense of humor, which makes class much better! My daily schedule is as follows: ·8:15-8:45: Breakfast - The food here is really good. Breakfast is buffet style, and they usually have rolls (with jam, cream chesse, butter, and whatnot), cereal, eggs, toast, meaty foods, and yogurt to choose from. ·9:00-10:30: - Political Economy - This class is a non-mathematical econ class...it is really more of a history class. It is quite fascinating though, because I know very little about English history/politics/economics. Today, for example, we spent most of the class talking about what health care is like ... read more
