Good news! They found my notebooks on the bus! Ha, I told the bus driver they had to be on there. Luckily, we were using the same bus company today, so they just brought my notebooks along with them. I have never been so happy to finish an essay in my life. We left the accursed Stow-on-Wold, which I didn’t see much of and will be happy never to return to, thank you very much, and coached out to Blenheim Palace. The Palace was given to one of Winston Churchill’s ancestors as a reward for a battle he won in . . . the war slips my mind, but it had something to do with the French anyway. The palace is amazing! I can’t believe that anyone would try to live in a place like this—it’s ... read more

Day 9: Sun, May 6th Today we headed away from the East Anglia area, towards the west side, for our 2 days in the Cotswolds. The Cotswold is a large area, full of small picturesque towns. The kind with green rolling fields, and lots of thatched roof cottages. From Mildenhall, it was kind of a long drive. One of the longest we’ve had so far. Our first stop was Blenheim Palace located in the town of Woodstock. We didn’t pay to tour the Palace, because it’s way too-overpriced, and I just wanted to see the gardens. The palace is home to the Duke of Marlburough/Churchill family. Winston Churchill was born here, and they had an exhibit about him in the courtyard that we were able to go to, which was very interesting. One of my main ... read more

After all the exotic travels, we landed and spent a few days with Ali & Birgitte in Oxford. The weather was gorgeous. These lyrics seemed appropriate as we set off back to work and our new jobs - even more so in retrospect now that we've been working for a month and a half! and it's goodbye to the sunshine goodbye to the dew goodbye to the flowers and goodbye to you I'm off to the subway I must not be late going to work in tall buildings In Tall Buildings By John Hartford, 1976 ... read more

Oxford as i have said previously is a fantastic little city. in the 5 days we have been here we have explored a fair bit of the city and done some very "oxford" activities indeed. as you would expect, oxford is full of history dating back a very long way (11-1200's i think, correct me if i'm wrong Chris) throughout the centuries many famous names have studied at the various colleges within the university; Bill Clinton, Bob Hawke, Tony Blaire, the list goes on. Wednesday: we visited Blenheim Palace today: the birthplace of Churchill and the home of the Duke of Marlborough. this is by far the most impressive building and place i have seen so far. it is enormous and stunning. words can't describe how amazing this place is. Thursday: The three of us trekked ... read more

I forgot to mention that we didn't actually finish our tour on day 7. instead of driving back all the way to london through horrendous traffic caused by the london marathon we got off the bus at the oxford services (which isn't as close to oxford as you might think). Our driver wouldn't come into oxford because of the traffic, which after being here for a few days is understandable- there is more buses than people in this town! We then had to figure out how to get into town before 6 pm (we had a formal oxford dinner to attend with Chris - the first of the semester!) So me being me i asked some randoms and eventually figured out that we had to catch the 280 bus into town. which we did. then told ... read more

On Sunday Adam and I embarked on a little day trip out of London, destination - Oxford. I'm not 100% sure it's what I expected. Essentially what you've got are all these buildings kind of in amongst just a small rural city. Hard to explain - The whole uni side of things, the buildings and history were impressive, but the town of Oxford aside from all of that, was somewhat lacking. I think from some of our pictures from the Carfax Tower you can see that too. But anyway, enough talking it down, I'll give you a run down on it all instead! We paid a whole bloody £1 for this little brochure that allowed us to do a self guided tour of the town. From the outside anyway. Unfortunately pretty much all the colleges like ... read more

London- Oxfordcrisadrian Whilst in the UK on the "to do" lists of places to travel there are always a few regular destinations and this list always includes Oxford! Having seen a few photographs of Oxford and a no travel weekend prompted us to gather a few friends and head towards Oxford. Karin & Torsten (German couple), Joe (flatmate) and ourselves met at Paddington station and went to Oxford by train. Oxford, known as The City of Dreaming Spires, is famous for its university, well spoken english and punting but aside from this it is also a very picturesque city. The buildings are all of stone and some of the streets are very narrow and at this time of year the trees were all blooming creating a postcard image that could have been from the south of ... read more

Oxford is mainly a university town with 39 colleges making up the University of Oxford. It is known as the "city of dreaming spires" due to the beautiful architechture of the university buildings. The University of Oxford is the oldest university in english speaking language and has had many famous scholars in the past. The likes of Lewis Carroll (Alice in Wonderland), T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia), C.S. Lewis (Chronicles of Narnia), J.R.R. Tolkein (Lord of the Rings) and a number of famous international political figures (including Bob Hawke) have all studied there. I visited many of the beautiful colleges whilst in Oxford with Christ Church College being my favourite. This college is where much of the inspiration for Alice in Wonderland comes from (apparently Lewis Carrol befriended the daughter of the Dean of Christ ... read more

I have spent my Easter holiday (from 7th - 9th April) with my host Mrs. Beatrice Clayre in Oxford. She is historian and archeaologist. I am pround of myself that I am able to meet such a knowledgable person in UK like her. During my 3-day stay, she told me about the history of Oxford and took me to some of the interesting historical sites, such as the prehistoric tomb called Waylands' Smithy and an enormous horse craving in the mountain called White Horse Hill, at where I had my first 'picnic' in my life! She is such an amazing person and I definitely will keep in touch with her in the future. ... read more
