Dinner was amazing last night. I probably could have ate an entire plate of potatoes! Last night, a group of us went out to The Eagle and Child. It was the meeting place often times for C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolken. It was pretty neat. We had fun going out. After that, Steve told us about this patio-type place he discovered, so we all went to check it out. What he neglected to tell us was that it really was a roof and we had to climb through a tiny bathroom window to get there. Haha.. well that was interesting. I passed out last night I was so tired, but it was good because I stayed up the whole day and am on a pretty schedule now. Yesterday really did feel like the longest day of ... read more

So here I am in Oxford. I got my passport two days before I left! Talk about cutting it close! The flight from Detroit to Baltimore was fine. Didn't have much time in Baltimore to mess around. The international terminal was way far away from where I landed so it took me awhile to walk there. When I got there, I was one of the last people to check-in, and the lady told me I took the last seat! Thank God I didn't get booted from the flight or something. British Airways is a pretty nice airline. The seats were actually pretty comfy (for airplane seats) and the food wasn't bad either. I actually slept really good on the plane; just put on my eyemask thingy and was out cold. I actually slept so good I ... read more

It never gets dark, wah wah…. There’s a prize for the first person to email me telling me the name of the band, the song and the album. If you want to know what the prize is in advance, that would be cheating, so I’m not telling you. Not that I’m counting down or anything. No, not at all. Now some people, okay all the people, mentioned that my last blog was very long. Yes, it was. I hate to say it, but you may want to get used to it. This one and the next one should be reasonably short, but then it’s all going to get just a little bit insane. Course there are reasons for that. I’ll try and spread the posting out a bit, but I make no promises till we get ... read more

Julia wasn't feeling entirely well today, so we decided to do something that she wouldn't mind missing quite as much. This happened to be one of the places I was most excited about seeing- Oxford. We visited the Ashmolean Museum and I was very disappointed to find the floor where the pre-Raphaelite collection is kept closed for renovation. A few were still being exhibited, and with all the other fine art and antiques it was well worth going. We stopped for lunch at The Eagle and Child (meeting place of the Inklings) and enjoyed some good pub fare just outside of the Rabbit Room, where Lewis and Tolkein, among others, met every Tuesday. After this we went on a 2 hour guided tour of the colleges and university. Our guide was fantastic and I could have ... read more

So, this morning began with a flurry at the rather ungoldy hour of about 5 am, but as I couldn't really sleep (combination of excitement and a truly shitty bed) it really didn't matter. Last night, after writing, I wandered around the dark streets of London and had my first proper pint of Guinness at a rather crappy and trendy bar next to The "Imperial" called the Night and Day Pub. Not bad, just not particularly my cup. So, we begin and my luggage makes weight, which is apparantly of great importance. I came in at around 42 pounds with a limit of 44, so I was not required to move anything. Once weighed the excited travelers were faced with a rather unfortunate situation. The only place open to get any sort of food was ... read more

I leave in four and a half days. Four and a half days? How has it come up so fast and I've not even noticed? I'm still in my hometown, Oxford, and busy preparing, visiting friends and relatives, doing a few days work for a slice of money before I go. This post is in part a test as I've never used this site before but also a glimpse of the beginning of this adventure I suppose. As of now, I can't decide if I'm disorganised or not. I think it's more a case of casual organisation that leads everything to fall into place at the last minute. I haven't packed, in fact I don't have half the things to pack yet. I'm going to London tomorrow to buy those and also pick up my ... read more

....AND IT IS! Let us begin with a touch of gloaty gloaty goodness. You may recall, if you have followed this little missive of mine with some care, that I complained some months ago about having to drive a people mover to Manchester (and getting a weekend in Brighton out of it). The reason, of course, was that the company couldn't find me a car. I have been to Manchester again recently and this time they found me a car. The car I was denied the first time I had to go up there. I can tell you all that driving a Jaguar Estate on English motorways is bliss. All that power, quick response and a smooth ride made for a very pleasant trip up. Even sitting in traffic sucks less when you're in a ... read more

Oh dear, two days is not enough for Oxford. I think I could spend weeks and weeks here. There’s so much history. In the morning we met outside Blackwell’s bookstore for a literary tour of the college. But first, we went through the bookstore which has the largest number of books for sale in one room anywhere—over half a million books in one room. See what I mean? I could spend three days in there alone, at a minimum. The literary tour was fascinating—we saw the houses where C. S. Lewis and Tolkien lived when they were first writing their books, the library used to film the interiors of the Hogwarts library, and some very impressive architecture which I have now forgotten all the details of. One warning about Oxford: don’t step on the grass. I ... read more
