With the ski season right in the thick of things, we were finally heading off to try our hand at skiing. Eight of us had committed to a week of skiing and snowboarding in the French and Swiss Alps. For most of us this was our first attempts at the sport - given all of us were Aussies or Kiwi's I guess that's not too much of a stretch. We flew into Geneva, Switzerland and picked up our cars and headed towards the Portes Du Soleil region a couple of hours away. This region is dubbed 'the Gates of the Sun' - a massive ski area (apparently the worlds largest) which is formed from a chain of villages strung along the French-Swiss border. It has some 650km of downhill slopes (catering for all skill levels) and ... read more

Now this was a great experience - a cold front had rolled in from Russia and brought with it a lot of snow. Dumping heaps in London City itself. And surprise surprise it actually settled. They say this was the most snow to settle in London for 18 years. Almost all public transport and airports were cancelled - meaning a lot of people either worked from home or too the day off. It of course gave us the chance to wander around our area - Pimlico - and wander up the road to Buckingham Palace, St James Park and Green Park to see some fo the sites in a way that is a rare sight. Well worth it. Except of course the dirty sludge that is left in its wake. Enjoy the photos... read more

Ange's birthday had rolled round again, so we saw this as an opportunity to visit Paris for the weekend. We decided since we didn't get much of a chance to enjoy Paris last time we were there (Ange had the flu), we saw this as a great chance to visit again. But of course we were lucky enough to see most of the tourist sites last time - so we hoped we could just enjoy Paris for being Paris. And of course finally get up the Eiffel Tower. We arrived early on the Saturday morning to cold and wet weather - not a great start - but still this was Paris. We were staying in the Latin Quarter again - this time in one of the bigger hotels there. And I have to say the staff ... read more

A Swiss Christmas

It was Christmas time, and we were in search of our second white Christmas - so Ange and I headed off to Switzerland for the four day break to enjoy the natural beauty of the region (and hopefully some snow). We flew into Zurich on the night of Christmas Eve and then took the train south-west to Lucerne where we would spend the next two nights, before moving onto Interlaken for a few days. After a good night sleep, we woke Christmas day and had a nice morning opening presents, talking with family in Australia and having a lazy breakfast, before we headed out for the day. It was a fairly brisk morning in Lucerne, but there was no snow itself in the town - although you could see some on the hills around the outskirts. ... read more

It was the lead up to Christmas and we were gearing up for our Switzerland trip (entry to follow), when I was asked to duck to Munich for a few days for work. So on the spur of the moment, Ange decided she would fly down to join me at the end of the work week to enjoy a weekend in Munich. We always had Munich on our destination wishlist, and this offered us to opportunities - one to go there (of course), and secondly a chance to experience the rather famous Xmas markets that Germany has to offer. So I had spent a few days working in Germany with our local office - and got to experience some of the that winter wonder - snowfalls. But as it drew on to the end of the ... read more

After leaving Rome, we made our way to Paris for the last part of our trip. We were to spend the next four days seeing the sights of iconic Paris. This was a destination that we had both really wanted to visit ever since we moved over here 18 months ago, but for some reason, even with it being so easy to get to from London, we had just never made it here yet. Until now. After Ange fighting a stomach bug for our whole time in Rome, we had hoped for a better time in Paris. But unfortunately as the stomach bug disappeared, Ange was struck down with the flu. Which once again meant poor Ange would struggle to enjoy our holiday and all Paris had to offer. But we would make the most of ... read more

In had been a long time coming, but Ange and I finally found time to take ourselves on a honeymoon. Our plan was to spend ten days split across Rome and Paris. And of course having only been back in London for 2 weeks after our last trip to Italy, it was time for another break. And I did feel like I needed one after all the celebrations and hangovers surrounding my 30th birthday in that period. We flew out of London on the Friday night after work and of course after some delays with flights, we arrived in Rome at about midnight and had to find our apartment. Unfortunately Ange had been starting to feel sick during Friday and by the time we had arrived and settled into our apartment, she was not feeling well ... read more

After leaving Florence and the Tuscany region, our plan was to make our way slowly to our next 'base camp' in La Spezia on the west coast of Italy, spending the day stopping and taking in the sites of Lucca and Pisa. But by now on our trip, we were pretty much over seeing another town and the buildings it had to offer. We were day dreaming of the beach!!! The weather was warm and all we wanted to do was kick back at the beach and not do too much of anything. So with that we decided to forgo the sites and catch our train directly to La Spezia. La Spezia was where we were goign to base ourselves for the next couple of days. While we didn't think it would (and it didn't) have ... read more

After leaving Venice, we caught a train through to Florence where we based ourselves for the next three days to explore Florence itself and the surrounding Tuscan region. And anyone who knows us knows we were pretty excited about the opportunity to experience the Tuscan cuisine and wines the region is reknowned for. SIENA After a good nights sleep we ventured out for our first day in the region. We started this with a day trip to Siena. Siena itself is about an hour and a half south of Florence by train, and provides a great chance to take in the countryside as you wizz through the region. I imagine Siena to now be like what Florence used to be like back in the day. It was this cute little medieval town in the middle of ... read more

After quite a few months of working we decided it was time to use up some annual leave and hit the continent again. After having so much fun last time we were in Italy, we thought we'd go back again and see some other parts of the country! So we started our 10 day trip in the north of Italy in Venice, quite fitting for the anniversary of our engagement :) We experienced a few train problems on our whole trip, the first and biggest was missing our stop on our way to Venice from Treviso and therefore being delayed by about 3 hours! I blame Adam but he tends to disagree. The debate continues! So in the end we arrived at about noon, and in the glorious sunshine we headed off to do some exploring. ... read more
