Purple Turtle
This is the lovely Purple Turle!! :) Let's see...it's been ten days since my last entry. And I feel like I've done quite a bit in that amount of time. So, here we go...
Over last weekend, we went dancing twice at the Purple Turtle. It is becoming my favorite place to go because we always have a good time dancing there. As you all know, I'm not a very good dancer in any way, shape or form, but I'm trying to learn to dance. As a part of this quest, I went to a social dance lesson with my friend John Paul on Monday night. It was about a 30 minute walk from St. Michael's Hall (which I stupidly did in heels), followed by an hour long Samba lesson (again in heels), and the night ended in another 30 minute walk in heels. Needless to say, after two hours of being on my feet and in heels, I was exhausted. My legs and feet ached like never before and I vowed to never wear heels again...haha. I also had some decent blisters on my baby toes. Poor, poor me.
Well, to add insult to injury, we went into London on Tuesday afternoon. Sadly, I had
Buckingham Palace
Mandy and I with Buckingham Palace behind us. Isn't it beautiful?? to skip a lecture because we misread the schedule for this week. But, we had a 3:30 tour of Buckingham Palace. Oh my goodness...it was beautiful. Unfortunately we couldn't take any pictures, but I bought a set of 10 postcards to help me capture the glory and beauty. Since Queen Elizabeth II is celebrating her 80th birthday, there was a special exhibit to commemorate it. And wowzers...it was special. On display were 80 (yes, one for each year of her life) of the Queen's gowns. They were in such immaculate condition that she has clearly only worn each gown once. In addition, some of her crown jewels were on display. Mandy, with her attraction to all things shiny, nearly died when she saw them all glittery in their cases. I have to admit, from the clothes to the jewelry to the palace, it's good to be Queen. I think I could handle being Queen!!
That evening we went to see the musical "Wicked." And by George, I think my life is complete. I was in complete shock and awe by the musical, expecially because Idina Menzel (who won the 2004 Tony Award for her Broadway performance) played Elphaba (the
"Wicked"
The "Wicked" sign at the Apollo Victoria Theatre in London. :) Wicked Witch of the West) and literally blew me away with her voice. I was speechless, and pretty much the happiest I've ever been. It was a dream of mine to see this musical live, and, to quote the show, "happy is what happens when all you're dreams come true." I was ecstatic!! It was pure bliss...definitely a night I will never ever forget. I told Liz that I could die happy at this point in my life since I'd been to Buckingham Palace and seen "Wicked" live. She then pointed out that I have to fall in love at least once. That probably won't happen while I'm studying abroad, but two out of three ain't bad!! 😊
On Wendesday we went to Warwick Castle in, you guessed it, Warwick! It felt like an amusement park...it was that commericalized. I definitely prefer the more historical castles, but we dealt with it. We saw an archery demonstration as well as a super cool trebuchet. For those of you who don't know what a trebuchet is (because I sure as heck didn't know prior to Wednesday), it is a large medieval catapult for hurling heavy stones. It is run by human
Me and My Beloved Program
I spent 6 pounds on a program from "Wicked" to commemorate the evening. power...literally, a couple of people running in a hamster-esque type wheel to lift this 6.5 ton weight. Once the weight is as high as the top of the trebuchet (which is about 18 meters), a heavy stone/boulder/rock/whatever is placed in this sling and then released and it goes flying through the air at a remarkable speed, distance and height. It was simply ridiculous.
Unfortunately for this field trip, I woke up with a sore throat and achey all over. So, I wasn't enjoying all of the walking up and down stairs. I tried to suck it up and just deal with it, but eventually I was so exhausted that I fell asleep on the grass. It was glorious. That evening I made some soup for dinner and finally went to bed around 11pm. Liz and Cate made the executive decision on Thursday morning that I needed to skip lectures and sleep. Especially since when I woke up in the morning, Liz asked how I was feeling and I replied with "I feel like I was hit by a bus." That meant Megan was not going to lectures. I then proceeded to sleep all day. I woke up for lunch
Trebuchet
This is a trebuchet...but more importantly is the fact that Mandy, Nora and I are in the picture. then went back to bed, since I now felt like I was hit by a car. I woke up for dinner and then was awake for a while. After a shower, I felt as though I'd only been hit by a bike. That's what I call progress. Unfortunately, because I had slept for 16.5 hours, I was unable to sleep on Thursday night. Thus, I was up until 4am. I tell ya...that's an awful cycle. I woke up this morning with minimal aches but still had a sore throat. So, I popped some Vitamin C and had a few cups of hot tea. It seems to do the trick. I've noticed that I tend to feel better in the late afternoon and into the evening. Maybe it's because classes are over...haha.
Well, since it is Friday, we are probably going out tonight. We're a little worried about the Purple Turtle because we heard that the normal DJ won't be back til next term!! Some people went on Thursday night and it was total crap. And tonight is the night when it needs to be great because Mandy's family is coming into town and we've been raving about this place.
The Wax Figures
Here are Mandy and Liz with one of the very realistic wax figures. So, who knows what we'll do tonight, but we're bound to have a good time because we always do. 😊
Until next time...farewell!
