Well it is presently one o clock in the afternoon on a beautiful saturday that has a prevailing head wind making racing a little tougher...but I tend to favour the head wind so racing is set up to be a success. Esther and I just completed our Semifinal in the double and we got through without to much concern to the final. So in a few hours we will tackle the quad (sarah, emma, Esther and Me) and then only a half hour later esther and I do the double final. Fingers crossed. So my summary about my experiences in England go something like this: We arrived to the rain that GB is so well known for and went back and forth from the henley to Putney were we trained on the not so still tideway. ... read more

Okay so we have no pictures this time but it has been because it has been VERY BUSY since we landed. We have trained on the tideways at Thames Rowing club and are now at Henley on the thames. Our racing takes place tomorrow and we are well......SHITTING OUR PANTS. Our quad has not been going as flash hot as it usually does but we are just going to start and give her...and fingers crossed we get over the line first. Esther and I are also rowing a douible....so again...Start and get out in front in the strategy. Think our competition is going to be stiff..... If you want to google the results....go under henley veterans regatta.......think it may be there Not sure when I will be able to update the blog with the full play ... read more

Thursday 6th July My brain is very tired tonight whilst I try and write up the days events. So to make it easier on the poor little thing I am going to do bullets: • Rain, thunder, rain, power cut, more rain • Rain stopped about 9:30am so off I went • Very wet walking • Got lost in some woods… very beautiful, not sure the photo does it justice • Trusted my compass and got out of the woods • Met a man walking his dog and chatted. He lost his wife to liver cancer in March and he is going to do the Coast to Coast walk with his daughter next week for a cancer charity. I warned him he would have a lot of time to think. Also turned out he was a ... read more

Wednesday 5th July So some days are good and some days are bad. Today started out definitely bad. Walking through the parkland of Blenheim Palace I lost the trail and ended up going through some really long grass. My boots and socks got soaked so much that they turned into washing machines. What with all the fairy liquid on my feet to prevent blisters they started foaming! See the photos of the foam coming out! Then I sliced my finger whilst buttering my croissants (I think I’m quite an up market rambler really!). Then I had my Indiana Jones moment trying to avoid a large field irrigator that had been positioned over the path. If you had seen me running to avoid the water you would have laughed! Then I fell over, which is never good ... read more

Tuesday 4th July Set off extra early this morning to ensure I wasn’t walking in the heat. It felt amazing for the first couple of miles, my feet were fine, my backpack was fine, and it wasn’t hot, and my legs felt like they could walk forever. I did get tired as the morning went on but everything seems manageable when your feet are OK! I am finally on the Oxfordshire Way, the first of the national trails I am following home, and it is fantastic walking well sign posted and the paths are well maintained and cleared of tall vegetation, like nettles! This is the way footpaths should be, thank you to whichever European Committee gave us all the money to do the layout and maintain these trails! Beautiful countryside to walk through at the ... read more

Monday 3rd July Left at 6 o’clock in the morning and already the sun was half way up the sky and it was over 20C. There is nothing better than breakfast outdoors and especially after a bit of a walk it tastes even better… see the one photo I took today! My conversations with passers-by are getting longer. This could be due to me wanting to talk to people more or maybe also with getting more into the countryside and people aren’t as frightened by me walking along with a rucksack! My 15 minute conversation with a woman on her morning walk covered topics ranging from the aggressive dog “Oz” at the next farm I was to avoid, to the possible location of an immigration holding facility on some local MOD land. Things I learnt today: ... read more

I've finally got to somewhere where I can access the internet (Rob and Sasha's Guest House is Worcester) so time to catch up on my blog.... I totally understand if you don't read them all and actually it might be a good idea if you don't since then I can still be slightly interesting when I re-tell you all the stories next time I see you! Sunday 2nd July Just a quick jaunt this evening with Andrew dropping me off exactly where I finished last Sunday at the Poletrees B&B. The temperature at 5:45pm on Andrews’s car was 29.5C so I was glad I hadn't tried starting walking any earlier in the day! Fields of sheep were my main challenge today but since they run away from you instead of towards you they are far ... read more

Hi everyone So with England out of the World Cup I thought I'd better get on with the task in hand and start walking again. However due to the lack of internet cafes in the Cotswolds I am having trouble updating my blog regularly. I am standing up at a computer behind the bar at my B&B to write this so forgive me if it is brief! I started walking again on Sunday night and have walked Monday and today as well and I am now just north of Bleinham Palace in the Cotswolds. I have slowed the pace to about 7-8 miles a day and walking only in the morning and that seems to be working great. I will send out full updates when I get to a computer with a chair. Also just to ... read more

Though my trip over seas was a little rough, things have gone really smoothly since I set foot in Europe. Because I was tardy by an entire day, I had a lot to catch up on. Julia was great in showing me around Oxford. We walked around the City Center. We passed many of the colleges of Oxford. I was lucky to see a student dressed up in his "exam" attire. At Oxford they have special outfits they have to wear to their exams. Julia and I walked around the outside of Christ Church and then headed for the covered market for some lunch. We ate "jacket potatos" (baked potatos) with cheese and beans. They were really good and we just couldn't get over the name. We then took the bus up the road about 10 ... read more
