I'm traveling to London, Rome, Venice, Munich, Paris, Salzburg, and then studying at Oxford!

Travel Blog Posts

Well, this is just going to be a brief post about my last week here and to say good bye! This week has been pretty relaxed, other than the fact that there was studying for finals to be done... Both of the finals went well, I think. Both of them were essay-style, to give you insight into what they were about, I wrote 4 page essays about the following topics: 1) How has Blair perpetuated the economic policies begun by Margaret Thatcher? 2) "To stand apart from the Euro...would be a betrayal of national interests." - Tony Blair. Discuss. 3) Have multinational enterprises had a detrimental effect on world welfare? 4) Has aid been successful? Right now I am officially done with class, so that makes me really happy! We had our fair share of excitement ... read more

Well, I decided it is about time for a post about what things have been like here in Oxford... This might be kind of random, as it will just be covering a few events from the last week and a half. First of all, the weather this week has been drastically different from the first week. I have been wearing my jacket every day, all the time because it is quite cool and windy here. Additionally, it is pretty much always overcast and rains about once a day (though not usually really hard or for very long at once.) It is nice having the cooler (and much more Oxford-typical) weather...it makes for much nicer sleeping conditions!! Two Wednesdays ago we went to Sandown Park, which is one of the larger horseracing tracks in the UK. It ... read more

Well, I would like to begin by saying that no matter what conclusions the title of this post may bring you too, I really did enjoy Paris! The weather was great the entire time we were there. It rained Thursday before we arrived and dropped the temperature from highs near 100 to highs near 80. It only rained Sunday, but we were in Versailles and actually enjoyed it...we were sitting at a covered, outdoor cafe watching all of the people in lines get soaked. :) Now on to the activities! The first morning in Paris, Nate and I went to the Eiffel Tower. It really is quite impressive to see- and a little factoid for you is that in heavy winds, the top of the tower only moves by 5-6 cm. Pretty impressive, no? So while ... read more

This past weekend I traveled to Salzburg, Austria. For those of you who haven't heard of that place before... it is known as the Home of Mozart and The Sound of Music. As far as scenery goes, it is absolutely beautiful- I really enjoyed it! (I will try and put some variety in the words I use so that they aren't all "beautiful," "gorgeous," "pretty," and "amazing," but it will be hard!!) We arrived in Salzburg late Friday night and found our hotel to be much better than we were expecting- if anyone ever goes to Salzburg, I would definitely recommend staying at the Bergland Hotel. It is family run and is about a 10 minute walk from the river/city center. That was really nice because we were there at the beginning of the week-long Mozart ... read more

Well, I made it to Oxford safely! Today was my second day of classes, and I think that they will be a lot of fun. Our two professors are both very competent, and yet they both have an amusing sense of humor, which makes class much better! My daily schedule is as follows: ·8:15-8:45: Breakfast - The food here is really good. Breakfast is buffet style, and they usually have rolls (with jam, cream chesse, butter, and whatnot), cereal, eggs, toast, meaty foods, and yogurt to choose from. ·9:00-10:30: - Political Economy - This class is a non-mathematical econ class...it is really more of a history class. It is quite fascinating though, because I know very little about English history/politics/economics. Today, for example, we spent most of the class talking about what health care is like ... read more

This entry is going to be short...because my next one will be really long! During our remaining time in London, we toured the Tower of London and saw Chicago in the Cambridge Theatre in the West End. The Tower of London was really neat- we did the hour tour given by a Beefeater, and he was hilarious to listen to and also very informative. Then we wandered through the towers and saw the Crown Jewels (including the largest diamond in the world) and varying places where people were tortured, etc in history... Chicago was a lot of fun to watch. I enjoy the music from it, and it was great getting to see it live- it definitely makes me want to go to more shows! My Dad left this morning (Saturday) which was quite sad. He ... read more

We made it in to London safely on Wednesday afternoon. I sat next to a 22 year old girl named Kate from Hungary on the plane over who had never flown before, so we talked most of the time and that was really cool. When we landed in the airport, Nate was waiting for us and then he, my Dad, and I headed in to London to find out hotels. Wednesday night we walked around the Southbank area of the Thames River, and it was beautiful. We ate in a 350 year old pub called The Anchor and it had wonderful food and tasty desserts (picture of the desserts posted specially for Maria- you're welcome.) Then we wandered around the area and watched the sun set, plus we got to see the London Tower Bridge be ... read more

Well, I said I wouldn´t be posting again until London, but since I have free internet in our hotel here, I decided I should probablz take advantage of it!! Most of this post is just going to be pictures from todaz. We began with heading out to Dachau concentration camp. We thought we´d be there about 2 hours, and ended up being there for over 3! It was incredible just walking around there and going through the museum. I mean, I have studied all of that information for zears in school, but seeing all of it while being at the actual place it happened was a...humbling experience. We didn´t take manz pictures there, because it wasn´t exactlz the picture taking sort of place. However, I did attach 2... Next we took the subwaz to Marinplatz. (I ... read more

A quick forewarning about this post: the keyboard I am using has the z and y switched, so from now on those two letters will be transposed because I am trzing to tzpe this as fast as I can. sorrz! We left Venice this morning at 5:15AM and arrived in Munich at 9AM. We dropped our bags at the Creatif Elephant Hotel (interesting name for an interesting place...) and then headed right to Neuschwanstein Castle. We were expecting there to be a lot of crowds, but there actuallz ended up being hardlz anzone there. I posted a picture of the bridge overlooking the castle just to prove the lack of people for anzone who cares... Anzwazs, we didn´t tour Neuschwanstein, but we did tour Hohenschwangau, which is the original castle of the familz (Ludwig´s parents). It ... read more

Hello! Well, we are just finishing our time in Venice- we leave our hotel tomorrow morning bright and early (at 5:15 AM) and head to Munich. Our hotel here in Venice was our first experience with a small, private residence. It is simple, but adequate, with several little quirky things about it such as having to turn on the electricty with the key (and you must turn it off before you leave the room.) The staff is very friendly and helpful though, so that is wonderful! Today we wandered all around Venice, and actually never got lost (save one little trip.) We visited Murano and got to see a beautiful vase and glass horse being made. I had never seen glass be blown before, so that was really cool! Not to mention that the shop had ... read more
