It's the most leisure day of my whole trip. I wanted to visit the largest museum in National Railway Museum, but it only opened after noon and I had to give it up and went to Yorkshire Museum instead. Yorkshire Museum showed the history of human being but its content wasn't as rich as York Castle. Personally I think it's not a must. I love the grass in front of the museum though, should be one of the best places to lay down on during summers afternoon I think. Then I went back to hostel and got back my luggage. I walked for about 15 to 20 minutes and came to the station. York is only one of the terminals on the way to Manchester, so it was already lucky when I was able to find ... read more

After I woke up, I went to the laundry and took a buffet breakfast in the youth hostel. There were not many types of food available, but their taste was quite good, and the most important-- hot enough--warming up your body in a cold autumn. Time spent on laundry as well as distance between hostel and town center were both longer than expected, so it was already after nine when I arrived at City Wall. Luckily the town area of York was quite small indeed, and places that looks to be far on the map could be reached within several minutes of walk. However, not sure of what ceremony the local government held, York Minster was "engaged". Based on the assessment by the police, they expected it won't be re-opened until 2 or 3 pm in ... read more

'ello all!!!! So much has happened in the last few days here. Actually yesterday we just got back from a four day trip to Northern England. Our first stop was York. There we visited the Jorvik Viking Centre which was built upon the original dig site. In this dig site over 40,000 artifacts were discovered over a period of 6 years. We learned about the Viking time be taking a "trip" back to 866 to the time of the Viking invasion. Then we traveled to 975 and toured the village of Jorvik. There we learned what life was like through talking figures that were actually kind of creepy. From there we went to the York Museum which had beautiful gardens. This museum also took us through time but in a more scientific method. We were able ... read more

Early Friday (14th) morning at 8 am, we left for our first house trip. We loaded the coach and drove about 2 hours to York. Along the way our coach driver, Bob, pointed out different landmarks and told us about the history of the area. Once we arrived in York at about 10, we went to our hostel to drop our stuff off so we could explore the city centre. The hostel we stayed at was the York YHA (youth hostel association.) It was surprisingly nicer than any of us had expected. It was a 15 minuted walk to the city centre, but we walked along the Ouse river so the scenery was nice, we passed a rugby pitch and the National Railway Museum. When we arrived at the city centre, we toured the Jorvik ... read more

Imagine you are driving along a tree lined highway. No garish billboards obstruct your view of the forest which is broken by fields and pasture land for cows and sheep. Through the trees you catch glimpses of a city. Then the trees break off and you see red roofs and brick fronts stretching as far as the eye can see. Skyscrapers soar into the sky with their glinting steel and glass. And then breaking into the modern airspace is a church spire or church tower or ruin of an ancient building older than anything you have seen before, older than you can imagine. In the town, the unfamiliar surrounds you. Street signs are posted on the corner buildings, traffic markings and patterns are foreign. The streets much narrower, and there is no "right" side of ... read more

It has been a difficult time of late in England with relentless rain falling, causing major flooding throughout the whole country. Leeds has been no exception, though we were very fortunate to have not suffered the major prolonged flooding (and the serious damage resulting from difficulties draining the water away) sustained by so many in our neighbouring regions. The street we live on flooded due to our close proximity to the canal in which the flowing river climbed ever higher, overflowing on several occasions. The ground floor and car park in our building were most affected but this did little damage as no one actually lives on this level of the building and the would-be commercial offices located there, are currently vacant. The river level eventually fell and our only real complaint can be the relentless ... read more

So after sitting in Dublin's airport for almost six hours of delays due to poor weather, we finally flew out to Luton. By the time we arrived in Luton, and rented a car (that didn't have issues:first one did and had to return it and restart all over again...), it was "half eight" (8:30, gotta love how the British speak!!!!) and we were on our way to York! Let's see, last we left off was in Waterford on Monday... It is 1:40 am here in York and Katherine was falling asleep typing so I will finish her post...to start, here are a few things I learned about finding one's way when lost in Ireland and Great Britain: 1) If you are ever lost in Tralee, Ireland looking for The Kilteely House (which, do not let ... read more

York and on to Inverness Europe » United Kingdom » England » Yorkshire » York By USinUKJuly 2nd 2007 This morning we stopped back in the center of town to see York Minster before leaving for Inverness. There has been a church of some kind at that spot since 927, and the current Minster was started in 1472 (it took them 250 years to complete!). I t was another day of periods of gorgeous sunshine and blue skies, then, 10 minutes later, pouring rain and overcast skies with almost black clouds. The Minster was awe-inspiring - the scale of everythi... read more

The day starts out sunny and change many times between sunny, cloudy, misting and raining. Upper 60's to 70 degrees - one of our nicest days yet (except for when it was raining really hard). Started out at Castle Howard - oh my gosh! It's a private house and the family still lives there (and has for over three centuries). Not allowed to take pictures inside, and I can't do it justice trying to describe it. We bought a book about it at the gift shop with all the pictures of the rooms we visited. The are currently filming Brideshead Revisited (a movie) there (it is also where the mini-series was filmed), and we were lucky to be there on a Sunday because the house is often closed for filming on other days of the ... read more

So, to begin, dinner was an interesting affair. We went to a pub called Lowthier. I have no idea in hell what this means, but it was a very good time. The meal was interesting to say the least. I believe what we had was lamb, but I could be wrong. It looked like turkey and tasted like beef, so I will assume that it was lamb. There were some assorted vegetables, some potatoes, mashed potatoes, and a bread substance. I have never in my life seen so many colors on a plate with so few different flavors. Everything tasted very much the same, and thanks to the gravy, that flavor was pleasant. During our meal I looked out the window of the pub to find another wonderfully named place to add to my collection. Joining ... read more
