Day 3 - Wednesday 27th August The wonderfully bizarre experience that is the Glebe hotel continued when one of the biggest men I’ve ever seen, think 6 foot 6 inch WWE wrestler, served breakfast and poured cups of tea - hysterical. By now it’s just a ritual, breakfast, load bus, get on bus, count off. Yes we have our own numbers and have to call out in numerical order to ensure everyone is on board. This happens any time we get off and on the bus. Talk about an interactive experience. Having down the count ….38 …tick ….let’s go!! We’re off to Stratford-Upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare. First stop is Anne Hathoways house. She’s the girl Bill married and they had a miracle birth 6 months later - you know how it works. The house ... read more

Jorvic Viking Expedition We caught the bus in and headed to the Jorvic Viking Expedition. Vikings had ruled York from 866 AD to 954 AD . The English briefly took control from 927 AD to 939 AD, but the last Viking King, Eric Bloodaxe was expelled in 954 AD and the town became a part of the new kingdom of England. Eric Bloodaxe, what a sweet name. Maybe I should change my name to Geoff Murder Bow or something.. The Viking Expedition cost £7 ($18). I actually got in for cheaper because the guy realised I was young and I was with Christoph. Probably thought that I was a single parent or something haha. Dom didn't want to spend the money so he went off and did a few things in town. Whilst there was some ... read more

Well, looks like this entry will be shorter than I anticipated.... I only have 9 minutes of internet left! Yikes! I spent today walking around the city. I did a free walking tour, that for the price was good, but I'm glad I didn't pay anything for it! The man was full of information, but not quite the type that I would have enjoyed. After a lunch of fish and chips, I gave my mom a quick call so she could in fact HEAR that I was alive, then I walked around the city some more. I went to Yorkminster, a great church that offered lots of photo ops. There was even a couple getting married there, so while a portion of the church was closed off to us tourists (yes, it's that big that they ... read more

Well, the adventures have begun! They started with a trip to the airport with my friend Greg, using his GPS and new iPhone to find Hamilton International Airport, and a stop for dinner along the way. We got there fine, and I had three hours to kill in what is, imo, the smallest international airport in the world! Though they did have a Tim Hortons both on the pre-security side as well as on the post-security side. While there, doing my Sudoku puzzles, I overheard some Scots chatting and I joined into a couple of conversations as well. Friendly people!!! :) On the plane I sat next to this really nice, young couple and we chatted a bit there. After dinner (at midnight!) I did manage to sleep for about 3 hours before waking up to ... read more

On Independence Day we drove just north of York and visited Castle Howard. This castle began constuction in 1699 and took over 100 years to complete. Today it's still used as a home for the Howard family, but is open to the public to visit. The castle is beautiful and the grounds are lovely. There are peacocks that roam the grounds, the gift shop sells peacock food! The Howard family has an interesting history. Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard were both members of the Howard family. They were the second and fifth wives of King Henry VIII, both were beheaded. ... read more

This was the first day of driving without my aunt or uncle in the car. Considering my issues with left turns and my occupation, I navigated instead of driving. I'm good with maps, not so good with driving on the left side of the road. I did drive around the block once. After my uncle reminded me a couple times that I was getting too close to parked cars on the left, I decided driving in the UK was not my thing. I'm good a parallel parking, so I parked the car a couple times, but that was the extent of my driving adventures in England. I wish I had a photo of me & the Fiesta... We drove over to York and visited the York Minster Abbey. I climbed all 167 steps to the top ... read more

We'll keep this entry brief as it was only a day trip on the train to York with Joshua as he is still on his school holidays. Our first stop in York was the NRm (National Rail Museum) which is free to go inside and managed to spend just over an hour there, although if we hadn't had Josh with us, we would have spent longer. We really enjoyed the Bullet Train inside the NRM as you can also walk inside, take a seat and watch a short documentary on the on-board t.v's. As we only had a day in York before our train home, we decided to take the NRM's road train (£2 for adults and £1 for children) from the NRM to the York Minster so this saved our legs and the walk there. ... read more

I travelled to York in March 2008 in tourist purpose. I have seen there The Mister - inside and dungeons with excavation, ground floor with altar - the excavation reveals settlements and foudation from Roman Empire times to later medieval and finally I went to top to admire the York's skyline - I had to overcome a big number of narrow stairs. Minster is really huge and will stay there long time. Afterwards I walked a bit along old town streets and I bought some items. Highly recommended to visit - York is one of rare places in England whose haven't turned to shops and it still remains original architecture. One of the most remarcable location is The Shambles - this is remained original medieval street with characteristic floor and craftsmen houses. York has city walls ... read more

We started the day with a good English breakfast. Fried eggs, bacon, beans, tomatoes and toast. Then we walked to catch the bus into York, another double decker with great views from the top deck. With the drivers help we were able to find the right stop to disembark at. Our first sight to see in York was All Saints Church on North Street. This church is famous for its beam and post architecture as well as for some of its stained glass windows such as the one depicting the corporal works of mercy. The woodwork on the screen and the angels carved onto the beams are also excellent. Our next stop was the Minster where we went in for their communion service which was remarkably similar to a Roman Catholic service which shouldn't surprise me ... read more

Hiya Everyone Sorry we haven't written for a few days, but, well, we're on holidays ;) On Monday we went to York for the day and had a wonderful time. We were advised to park at the Park & Ride and get the bus into town, but we figured it couldn't get that busy in winter so we took the chance and drove all the way..... lucky penny from Ripon came good and we got a car park no worries! (Mark can't remember if he told you all about the lucky penny or not, if not let us know and we will tell you) We went to the Castle first. It's actually called (searching for the name.........) Clifford's Tower and it's built on the top of a man made mound (try saying that 3 times quickly ... read more
