This was the first day of driving without my aunt or uncle in the car. Considering my issues with left turns and my occupation, I navigated instead of driving. I'm good with maps, not so good with driving on the left side of the road. I did drive around the block once. After my uncle reminded me a couple times that I was getting too close to parked cars on the left, I decided driving in the UK was not my thing. I'm good a parallel parking, so I parked the car a couple times, but that was the extent of my driving adventures in England. I wish I had a photo of me & the Fiesta...
We drove over to York and visited the York Minster Abbey. I climbed all 167 steps to the top of the abbey. We had a great view of the city and the wall that surrounds part of it. The 167 steps in this abbey dissuaded me from climbing the 199 to see the Whitby Abbey. About half way up we had to walk across part of the abbey to get to the other set of steps to get to the very top of
the abbey. I took most of the photos from the halfway point. At the top they have fencing all around the abbey with some holes big enough to get a camera through. I really couldn't get very many interesting photos from there. The architecture of the York Minster is amazing.
After leaving the abbey we walked along the wall the surrounds a portion of the city. The city wall used to surround the whole city, it was protection from invaders.
We also visited the Treasurer's House and had a very odd tour guide- he wore all black and told us a story about the ghosts of Roman soliders. This area was settled by the Romans and in the basement of this building there is an area that has been escavated down to an old Roman road. There's also the base of a column from the same time period. The ghost story was cheesy, but I did like seeing the Roman road and knowing that all those hundreds of years ago people walked there.
York MinsterThe final warning before you start climbing the 167 steps to the top. I love how they offer a refund if you change your mind.
