This is my first ever travel blog entry. The purpose of this entry is two fold: to explain myself and to have a practice blog post. (I have just realised I sound ALOT like I'm writing an English essay - target: lighten up) Explanations I accidently created this account back in January when I was trying to comment on one of Beth's posts. Which doesn't bode well for my ability to use this shibaz but I'm sure it'll all work out fine. Ok so the main point of this blog is so that you people can see what I'm up to. I should be able to update this fairly regularly since I am reliably informed we have internet access at Camp. Although this is obviously dependant on time off etc. I do actually have another blog. ... read more

So here I am, back home, almost four months since my last blog. I was worried about coming home after so long away. I already knew how it felt, having been away for 19 months on a previous trip. Losing the freedom and excitement of travel and replacing it with the mundane, the routine and lots of pitying ‘welcome back to the real world’ comments is not an easy experience. Add to this the fact that the ‘real world’ is in recession and doesn’t tend to allow for much hammock-time, and the picture is looking rather grim. I was worried about job-hunting during a recession and the way it might cause my re-entry to the world to be rather less than gentle. Although these first few months back home have been pretty mixed - at times ... read more

This was a test trip out. We tried out the new camera and our dog free existence. This allowed us to stay in a hotel, and explore York at our leisure. We started by going to the Jorvick center which consisted of all things Viking. It started with a ride back to the 900's and transport around the simulated Viking village of York (or Jorvick as it was known then). Then we went to Barley Hall to look at an old medieval house, and then on to The Dig, where you can excavate artefacts of your own by digging in "soil" with your own trowel looking for relics - just like Time Team. The next day we went around York museum and visited the Victorian street. Then, after lunch we went up to Thirsk to see ... read more

We've been married a whole week now - isn't it blissful! Two days of chaos saw us moving lock, stock and barrel from Essex this week. All our Worldly possessions now ensconced in a (hopefully waterproof) shed in York. One more week in the UK then we head off on our adventure...... read more

The first place I visited was Clifford’s Tower, which is a stronghold built on a hill. It wasn’t very large and I decided not to go inside, but I sat on a bench nearby to eat a sandwich while I looked at it. The next place I went was the Jorvik Viking Center. The main feature of Jorvik is an underground ride through a recreation of what York was like 1,000 years ago. I was a little disappointed because the pictures had shown real people dressed up as Vikings, but it’s mostly robots. It was still fun to see and really interesting, and it involved sitting down which doesn’t happen much in most museums. I wish I had saved Jorvik for after my walk along the city walls. I went around the city walls next, but ... read more

John, who is a stonemason working with Nigel at York House in Malton, invited all of us out to his "family house". Located outside of York, Moreby Hall (built in 1828) was purchased jointly about 25 years ago in an unconventional arrangement by several members of his parents' generation, including his mother and several of her siblings and their spouses. John grew up in this house surrounded by his extended family: grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. Although each family has its separate living quarters with a small kitchen, there is also a communal kitchen and dining room -- where many holiday dinners were shared over the years. John has many memories of growing up in this extraordinary house; and we were very fortunate that he shared this experience with all of us. We roamed the grounds, ... read more
