After a restful night at my cousin Pum's house (and a much nicer view of London this time) I'm now finally here in York. For the record, guidebooks are incorrigble - a pleasant 15 minute stroll to the hostel like hell. Try a good 45 minutes to an hour away - and Pum's huge, heavy rolling bag I foolishly decided to swap for my light, comfortable backpack is not doing me any favours at all. Argh. But moving on - first stop was predictably York Minister. One of the most gothic ministers in all of UK and perhaps one of the largest stained glass window collections I've ever seen. Pretty impressive, and probably just about worth the hefty entrance fee. I think. The next day I decided to join a free walking tour of the city ... read more

Went to York the other day and had a ball at the Roman Festival. Now that thats over with it is a case of what to do next. Well I came across this site and it gave me some good ideas There were even a good choice of reasonably priced York Hotels to choose from. While you have a look at the site check out what they have details there as it really doesnt have to cost you a fortune to see the place. York is great for a weekend or a week imo getting there is no problem on the train as it is on the main east coast rail line. ... read more

Thom - Finally arrived in York yesterday after staying with James and Emma in Penistone on Sunday night and then spending yesterday morning in Harrogate which is a fine, clean town with lots of well kept flowers, but not much else. Then we went to pitch up tent on a rather nice campsite just outside York. This was more expensive than we were quoted on the phone and the owners seemed unorganised. Today we went into York and generally had a mooch around this morning looking at all the sights. We also went to the National Railway musuem which had some old interesting trains in including the Flying Scotsman which was in bits - it looked like the biggest meccano set in the world. It also had lots of royal carriages I never knew you could ... read more

It was even hotter in my room last night but with us being on a side street at least things were quiet enough to leave my windows open. I put my bulging suitcase and my bags of souvenirs in front of the window just in case somebody decided to come visit me by climbing up the scaffolding and through my giant window. I pretty much passed on breakfast. There wasn't much to chose from other than cereal and toast along with the accompanying marmalade (yeccccch). I downed a glass of orange juice and half a slice of buttered bread. Based on past performance I knew our bus would be stopping somewhere before too long. We never go more than two and a half hours between stops on any of the EF bus rides. As we loaded ... read more

Unfortunately, team orson is smitten with the wanderlust bug and can never stay in one place for very long. The fjords of western Norway beckon. We bade farewell from our English hosts and make our way across the Midlands towards Newcastle on England's east coast. Along the way, we pass through the walled city of York, the spiritual capital of Northern England for over 2000 years.... read more

Hello yet again. Well, we made it back safely from York - it was nice to get away for the Bank Holiday Weekend (3 day weekend), as we didn't go anywhere for the last one. It was a bit of an odd trip really, but we had a great time. On the way up there in the car (Vaughan ditched the work van for a car) we were stuck in traffic for 3 different car accidents - the back-log was massive & we lost about 2 hours overall, arriving in York after 11pm (we didn't leave until after work). It still worked out fine, & it was nice to get away from London. York was another place that makes you wonder why you live in London. I think it has a population of about 180,000, but ... read more

I started at the mammoth cathedral then walked through tourist packed, tiny medieval alleyways. I stopped in a very colorful pub, reminiscent of Amsterdam's cafes, to use the internet before walking the walls. Could have been here longer than the hour I was. But since it was a short stay there isn't much else to say. ... read more
