Well Im beginning a new adventure and am currently working at a child development center in England. So far Ive worked mainly with two year olds and have learned they can be quite crazy and drive me bonkers. However, overall they are great kids and have taught me so much about the simple things in life, especially: make sure the window sills are high enough so that 2 yr olds cant do pull ups from them.

25, November 7:45 am Today’s the start of Turkey Break! However, its 7:45 am and we’ve already encountered some problems. The morning began smoothly with the taxi arriving early, got to ElWe y in about 20 minutes and the rise cost less than 30 quid. We even ended up being 40 minutes early for our train, which for me is really good. We finally got settled onto out train when the announcement that a fallen trees was blocking the tracks and we would have to switch trains immediately if we wanted to be on time for London. A fallen tree, man-o-man! This means that we now end up at a different station in London and have to take the tube to the correct station; hopefully we don’t miss our train! 10:22 pm As you can tell ... read more

So here is my confession for the month of November on the 4th of November I was beat up by a two year old, literally. The story begins that I was leading circle time righ before lunch. Part way through a story one of the boys started to beat up on another little girl for blocking his view of the book. He is much bigger than the girl so I was worried for her and thus moved the boy out of the cirlce. I guess that upset him even more because he started hitting me with a piece of toy celery from our kitchen area. I must admit that it felt like I was getting a shot in the arm. I tried to ignore him by continuing with the story and I guess that made him ... read more

Crazy news is that the CDC has both foot and mouth disease and swine flu going around. F&M is going around in the infant rooms, meanwhile we have at least one confirmed case of swine flu in the toddler section. The room next to ours had two of their three teachers gone so the room was closed. Also, one of my teachers called out and the one that was at the CDC almost vomitted on the playground. Not only our the caregivers getting sick but we had 4 two year olds with temps over 102. Its so crazy! I bleached almost every toy in our room. Today, I also found out that we have at least two maybe three kids wiht foot and mouth disease. I swear germs must be having a party in our ... read more

'Ello from acorss the pond! Sorry about slacking on my blog. Anyway, its been a crazy time since Ive last written. First of all, as I was taking some of our kids on a walk to see the babies (and mind you these are supposed to be our 5 most well behaved kids). We walked past a couple of baby rooms and everything was going fine and dandy. Then all of a sudden 4 of the 5 kids dropped the rope, right as we were passing the lobby. One kids almost escaped through the door to the parking lot, one little girl went down the hall and two other kids just jumped up and down squeeling and laughing. The 5th child was a little boy who, as he saw me get upset, got upset at ... read more

Lesson Learned

All I have to say is that I have learned a very important lesson these past two days. When a two year old has something in their mouth be careful how close you get to their face. This on little girl likes to put things in her mouth just to spite us. So yesteday when she put this big piece of hard plastic (like it broke off a toy or something) one of the teachers held her while it was my job to get the object out. So here I am trying to pry this girls mouth open and finally I got the plastic bit out. For a moment I felt proud and then that feeling quickly disappeared. The little girl spit in my face! Man,I was so taken aback that I just stood there. And ... read more

So the past two weeks have gone by amazingly quick. Last weekend some of the women took Jessie and I out to a club in a town near by and all I have to say is it was one crazy night. The thing I cant get over is that when you go clubbing over here you actually have to look really nice, as in no plain shoes and most of the girls wear skirts or dresses. I had a ton of fun being able to go out and dance and we even stayed at the club til 3:30 am (by the way that is super late for me since Ive been going to bed by like 1030). This past weekend Jessie and I took a went to London through a trip that the base provides. I ... read more

So Im enjoying work more and more everyday, especially now that I am getting the hang of how my classroom works. However, I must admit that today crossed the line into crazy land. The biting was a tad less today but I did get to experience something quite funny (at least it was funny a while after it happened). Anyway, I had been at work about an hour when we went outside so the kids could run out some of the energy. Well one of the girl's mom, who works at the CDC, came out to play with her for a bit. However, she soon went back to work and Elzie had a major freakout. She started screaming and crying for her mom to come back. I went over and picked her up telling her ... read more

Well last week was a short week: 3 days but that helped to ease us into what its going to be like working at the CDC for the next three months. Thursday was actually a fun day which made it go by quickly. In the morning I found myself thrown into the 1 year old room because they were very short on staff that day. Being in the 1 yr old room room made me realize what a developmental difference there is between the 1 yr olds and the 2 yr olds. Just one year makes a huge difference. For instance I have come to appreciate that although 2 year olds still scream and hit each other they can actually respond to your questions and tell you how they are feeling or what book they want ... read more

So its true: the "Terrible 2s" do exist and man are they crazy little buggers! Now I am used to working long shifts and I am used to working with kids, just not 8 hours with 14 two year olds. Man they are very entertaining but I was exhausted after my first day. Yesterday was my first day at the centre and I was supposed to be a shadow. But of course after about an two hours I was thrown the gist of things. Actually one of the very first things I got to do was file an incident report because I was the only that witnessed one child bite another and it left a nice indentation. The kids are reaching an age where sharing is a newly encouraged action but one that is still quite ... read more
