So the day has finally arrived....six months after booking the flights, about two years of planning, saving, scrimping, selling most of our belongings, quitting our mundane 9 to 5 jobs, finding a foster home(thanks to Nigel & Chris) for our two cats Misti and Micky and some very generous help from family and friends we find ourselves heading off for distant shores. It should take us about four days to reach our first port of call on the Perhentian Islands in Malaysia(via a one day whistlestop tour of Singapore) via car, train, tube, plane, tube, overnight jungle train, car & finally water taxi. We now sit the departure lounge at London Heathrow terminal 3, with mixed feelings of excitement, happiness, fear and a little sadness of leaving family and friends. This is the first chance I've had to log in since leaving Maryborough, so I'm playing catch-up ... (Thursday) “Flight attendants, take your seats now! Passengers, secure your seatbelts.” The flight captain’s urgent instructions soon scattered the attendants and was followed by the mass clicking of seat belts, a few moments of turbulence, and then … silence. That minor drama as we flew through a thunderstorm out of Singapore was the only hiccup during our 30+ hours of travel from Maryborough to Southhampton, England. Mind you, the tight security, including police walking around the Aubi Dhabi airport carrying semi-automatic weapons, was there for a reason considering their neighbours’ history. Ok so business class is officially ridiculous. The only reason i'm writing stuff this early into the trip is because, due to the surreal brilliance of the Iberia club lounge, I felt compelled to make a note of how awesome it is. Every single room has free food of some sorts. In the corner of my eye I can see bowls of Kettle Chip packets with buckets of wine underneath them. There is a completely unmanned bar in the next room. I could get extremely drunk at 6.15 in the morning if i wanted to. I won't, but I could. We've just had the buffet breakfast and I'm currently using the free internet to write this. Shortly, I'll go to the lounge's theme park, followed by the champagne swimming pool before boarding my plane made of ... read more

20 minutes ago I should have been stepping off the plane into 32 degrees of heat in Nairobi, I had grand plans to visit the national park in the afternoon and maybe stroke a giraffe in the giraffe centre... but no my plane was delayed initially by 15 minutes due to the plane being late, and when it arrived it had a technical fault so it was delayed a further half an hour but an hour later it was cancelled. This is the first cancelled flight I have ever been on so what happened next was all new to me. they advised us that they were going to take us out to the bus stop and pile us all on coaches and take us to the park inn all 350 of us! of course then there ... read more
