It was a rough ride on the overnight train from Krakow. At least the two person sleeper compartment meant we had the space all to ourselves. A small sink in the corner was a nice touch. Bottled water and snacks were provided. It was warm in the top bunk so the provided blankets were more beneficial as cushioning than for warmth. We knew there would be a delay at the border to change the gauge of the train’s wheels and expected immigration would be visiting on both sides of the border. We have never had good luck with overnight trains in any country we have visited. We were sure that we would not have a completely restful night but nevertheless we were hoping for the best as we made our way to the border and our ... read more

Today I got a call from Laura. Sergei was going to come by and meet up with me, to show me where to get real cigarettes from. Thank god the lights were driving me insane. He had a gentlemen from Belgium with him named Peter. Great guy, works for Bridgestone. IT professional like me. We got a long splendidly. He actually is part of the Bridgestone test bed so he plays with a lot of tech. We talked about Arista switches, and other things like WAN Links, etc. I suggested Riverbed or Cisco WAAS for link speed increases in the wan. Explained a little how they impact WAN traffic. Peter is a great guy, loved meeting him. We even talked about China and the great wall. He says I will greatly enjoy my time when I ... read more

Wednesday I went down to Independence Square and did some shopping for things I left at home, a razor, shaving gel. Well I will never forget those again. I appreciate my gel, and my razor a lot more. It is not hard to navigate the town center at all. I am told that the center is the only part of Kiev that has 2 McDonalds next to each other as well. I then bought some flowers for Julia, of course a day later they are starting to die. I even proposed to her. This means that I want to marry her, but there are steps in that too that we will have to take. Like getting her over to visit the states, and then if she is good with it, marry back home. This came to ... read more

Tuesday Julia and I went to the cinema. Watched Batman vs. Superman in Ukrainian Language. I followed it as far as the story line, but now I need to watch it in English. I found that Imax messes with my head, lasik and the 3d glasses do not mix. I really do not see the difference in it and the normal movie screens either. But it was a great movie, and the best part I was with my queen. Afterwords we were going to go to the upside house and the mirror maze, but they closed at 10. Back home we came. It was very fun with my dear.... read more

Started the day out with a hot shower, the Ukrainian hot water is really hot. Then did some updates, checked on Facebook, and went to have some Apple and ginger tea. Was good tea, hot but really good. I think tea here beats the quick stuff we do in the USA. Even the restaurants back home can not compare I think. Well most of them. Nice sweet apple slices in it. Then we walked around and I was shown some architectures from the city. From the chocolate house, which has some interesting city. To state buildings, independence square, and through one of the chapels. My heart will be coming soon. It was not that difficult to adjust to the time difference since I work nights. The 7 hour difference was a piece of cake. I changed ... read more

So the trip was delayed one day, thanks to JetBlue flying staff. That and some person that felt threatened by me. Oh well I am here. I am sore and beaten up by the flight. That took forever to get here. My queen was waiting for me. Such a beauty. Customs was pretty relaxed in my opinion. After I got done I went to eat with Laura and my queen. Tried some new foods. I must say, the dumplings were good, for having mushrooms in them, the cabbage one, not so much, but it was okay. I am just not a big cabbage eater. Chicken was dry but it was good, the mashed potatoes though at that restaurant was lack lustre, but the beer was good I had 2 of them. Laura taught me a few more ... read more

We're trying to get back into the blogging thing, so here is a blog from last year. Expect at least one more about Ukraine before we start on our new/old country. A shameless plug for Kiev- go on, visit, it's lovely Living in Ukraine for about eighteen months, I've visited Kiev several times. However, almost all of these have been work related, so I've become pretty familiar with the inside of London School of English buildings, and the inside of the British council. We also both flew into Kiev at Christmas and stayed overnight before getting the bus back to Odessa, and then saw some dark, snowy streets and the inside of a couple of bars. This kinda gave the idea of Kiev as a typical ex-soviet city of concrete tower blocks under a grey, cold ... read more

Thursday July 23, 2015 – I woke up sometime around 4am when the woman on the train with me left to go to the bathroom. She couldn’t unlock the door so she had to wake up her son to help. They were quiet, but I am a light sleeper. An hour later I got up to go, always afraid that soon everyone will be and the line will be enormous and I’ll never get in before the train stops. But it turns out that was never the case on this train. The train arrived at 6:30am and I didn’t have anywhere to go. This is a problem I did not anticipate when booking an apartment, instead of a hostel. In a hostel, you can just go and sit and wait or drop your bag off when ... read more

July 20, 2015 – Today was a transition day. I left Cyprus and headed for Ukraine. I had some time in the morning, so I repacked my things for the flight and then went out to take a few more pictures. Hot though, so I came back quite quickly. For breakfast I forgot to buy milk, and the milk in the house had gone off, so I had cereal with water. Not quite as delicious as it sounds. But it worked. I said good bye and left for the bus at 11am. I had to take city bus #30 to the stop for the airport bus that would take me back to the Larnaca airport. The first bus took slightly longer than I thought, about 30-35 minutes, with frequent stops. I asked the driver at some ... read more
