Ed: Having not spent nearly enough time with Annette and Paul gallivanting across Scotland and the Greek islands, we decided to go back for more and meet them for the weekend in Lucerne (have I mentioned how much I love living in London?) We almost made a major blunder when booking the flights - for some reason we thought Lausanne was the same place as Lucerne. Before you rush to judge, note that the Swiss have like 28 official languages so we’d assumed it was the same place just written in different languages. It’s a simple mistake - try saying them both out loud and you will see! Luckily we double checked and realised just before shelling out £200 for non refundable flights. Phew! Anyway, we flew into Zurich on the Friday evening, and decided to ... read more

Made our way from Lichtenstein to Switzerland today. The drive to Lucerne was gorgeous. Back to seeing a lot of brown Swiss cows and their tinkering cowbells. Passed through a beautiful 10-15 miles before driving by Zurich which was full of crystal clear lakes and rivers, dazzling mountains and some waterfalls. Of course, all this was seen by the road so the pictures I am posting on them are through a moving bus window. So, not optimum photography by any means. We arrive at Lucerne and immediately go to see the wounded lion. Our tour director wanted us to see it upon arrival because at around 4 pm each day is the perfect light for it. Apparently, the Swiss have a history of supplying mercenaries to foreign governments. One such case happened in Swiss soldiers attempting ... read more

Today we made our way from Austria to Switzerland. On the way we made 2 stops. First the Swarovski Crystal Museum. It was beautiful. We walked through walls made from floor to ceiling of crystals to get through the museum and ended up in the showroom/shop where most of the girls spent at leats half an hour trying to decide what to buy. Bought myself and Kiz something... We then continued on the Liechtenstein for a dodgy kebab for lunch and to get some Swiss Franks. We have now been to 4 of the smallest countries in the world. Monaco, San Mareno, Vatican City & Liechtenstein. We arrived in Lucerne and jumped on the Gondola to get to our hotel at the top of Mt Pilatus. It took 45 minutes to get to the top, 2132 ... read more

Lucerne We were up nice and early as we planned to journey up to the top of Mount Pilatus. I was really disappointed as it was grey and very foggy and I figured we wouldn't be able to see anything. How wrong I was!! The coach took us to Kriens where we hopped on a cable car that took us up to Fräkmüntegg, which is about half way up the mountain. After only a few minutes we had risen above the fog and it was a glorious sunny day. Below us were farms and forests and you could see tracks where the skiing might be in the winter. From Fräkmüntegg a Gondola carried us the rest of the way to the top of Mount Pilatus (2132m). Here we spent an hour or so doing some of ... read more

Continued from last entry: The next day we went to Switzerland, to Lucerne. We went up the air tram to the top of this mountain but it was too foggy to see anything. We all decided to skip the Lucerne lake cruise because it was raining so we went to a jewellry store and me, Shaun and Ben took off and walked around and I found really cool shoes that were 489 Swiss Francs that I obviously didn't get. Then we were making our way back to the bus and I saw these swans and ducks and I wanted a pic with them so I went onto these stairs that go into the water and the goose started to go after the duck and then it turned to me and I got scared and stepped onto ... read more

Our journey to Switzerland took us through 4 countries in one day. We left Germany bright and early and ducked back into Austria on the way to Neuswanstein castle, which sits on the border of Germany and Austria. This castle is like a fairytale castle, and is said to be the inspiration for Sleeping Beauty's castle at Disneyland. It sits in the most gorgeous setting atop a hill with views of the countryside below. The views were phenominal. The castle was built by King Ludwig II, or Ludwig the Mad as he was better known, in the late 19th century. It was not completed by the time of his death, so onlz 14 of the 65 rooms are completed. The interior is very interesting, with many murals on the walls depicting scenes from his favourite operas ... read more

We left this morning on the bus to head to Italy. Our tour director decided that we would stop and do the tour of Mt. Stanserhorn since the weather looked to be really good and didn't want to take the chance at the end of our tour and get bad weather. When we got outside of Zurich, I couldn't believe how green everything is! This is such a pretty county. Drove through a lot of pasture and farm land. Noticed that hay bales are covered in white plastic versus what we see back home. Our tour director told us that the Swiss typically speak 4 different languages which is incredibly impressive. She also said that 80% of Switzerland is mountains and lakes which explains its beauty! River and lakes all over along our drive and some ... read more

The Swiss train leaves right on time - the Italian train to connect with it has 25 minutes to spare but arrives 23 minutes late - I benefit from the run. Northward its obvious when we reach Switzerland - its where the scenary becomes stunning - passed the lakes of Tessin and through the mountains of inner Schweiz. Arriving in Luzern is a blast from the past. I head straight for the lake - Stef arrives by bike and we enjoy a swim and catch up. Astrid and Bruno were so welcoming and we appreciate their hospitality and company for the next two days. After bircher meusli its off on the bikes to explore town. Next night its a send off for Stef with dinner and friends - time to play mafia, meyer and the guitars. ... read more

Day 5 & 6 Fussen - Luzern 19th - 20th Sept We backtracked on the train to Buchloe, and changed for our trip through the Bavarian region into Switzerland. Train travel in this part of the world is a very enjoyable way to travel and to see the beautiful scenery passing by. We changed again at Zurich and caught the Intercity service to Luzern. Our accommodation was in the old town which is gorgeous. Liani and I had visited Switzerland last year and had fallen in love with Luzern, but in the winter, so it was nice to see it in the summer. We did have plans to take a cruise on Lake Luzern and then ride the rack and pillon railway up to Mount Pilatus to view the surrounding mountains which are in snow year ... read more
