Geo: 39.4716, -0.375017Today I was determined to get onto that walking tour and now I knew exactly where to go. So at 10.30 I was standing in Plaza de la Virgen, ticket in hand, ready to walk. The tour was good, although many of the places we went I had already seen before....only now I know what they are. The first place we saw was the Basilica, located at the back of the cathedral. I had noticed it yesterday, it's a very nice building, but apart from the bridge between the cathedral and the basilica, I had not thought it was a religious building. Well I might have if I had bothered to read the plaques. Strangely enough the basilica is not as big as the Cathedral. We went inside for a quick look, but they ... read more

Geo: 39.4748, -0.375508The plan today was to walk to a place called Plaza de la Virgen and join a walking tour. The tour started at 10.30, by which time I was hopelessly lost at the other end of the city. Apparently I was supposed to turn right when leaving my hotel instead of left. I found myself near the bullring so I figured this was a good place to start the day. First I had some breakfast, unlike my hotel in Madrid, my current hotel dies offer breakfast but its €12, outrageous I say. So I had a coffee, croissant and juice fr €2.50. Then I made my way over to the bullring. Now firstly, for any animal rights activists out there, I did not attend a bull fight. Although in their museum they do have ... read more

Geo: 39.4716, -0.374981Not much to report today. I was up, packed and at the station to get my train to Valencia by 10am. Spain is another one of those places they don't tell you where the train will be until 15 minutes until the departure. The station is a little like an airport. Instead of checking our tickets on board, I had to get my ticket scanned as I made my way to the platform. I had to put my bags through an x-ray and everything. The trains were cool though. No wifi, but clean and comfortable and fast. 356km's in 1 hour 40 minutes. The countryside is different here again. Much more dry and arid but plenty of farmland. Parts of of it appeared flat but I could see hills off in the distance. Other ... read more

Yesterday morning I bid farewell to Josh yet again as it was time for me to move on to Valencia from Madrid. We spent three lovely days together walking the busy streets of Madrid and finding hidden streets where we could catch up on one of his crazy stories or read the morning paper. We popped into several cafés for a morning coffee or afternoon beer and spent hours people watching while sharing tapas. I also allowed myself some "me" time to explore the park and Prado museum and stopped in one afternoon to enjoy churros con chocolate (warm, sugary fried dough with a side of thick chocolate pudding for dipping). It was delightful! On Tuesday night Josh revealed to me that he had booked a place for two days in Toledo and had invited me ... read more

After our fleeting visit to Teruel it was time to get on the road again and head for Navajas a tiny village up in the mountains. The name reminds me of spaghetti westerns and the native American Indians. And to be fair this is the land of the spaghetti western and later in the week have a date booked with the western stage set of The Good , The Bad and the Ugly. But that’s another story . Our journey was again through a barren landscape of dried river beds. The mountains were cooler and the city dwellers come up in their droves to escape the heat of summer and bike along the many disused railway lines in the area. Navajas was once a bustling thriving mining area. The villas in the town tell the story ... read more

Arrived in Valencia by plane. Our host, Juanjo, was at the airport to greet us. On the way to the apartment we will be staying at, he gave us a great little tour of Valencia complete with recommended places to eat and things to do. Our apartment was a listing on Airbnb.com. This is our first accommodation from that source. It seems to be working out great. We highly recommend it for finding places to stay while traveling. You can get just a room in someone's home or rent an entire apartment, like a vacation rental. We have a problem. We can't go home--unless I can find Valencia oranges there. Jerry has been making fresh squeezed orange juice each morning for breakfast and I think I have become addicted! We had hoped to be able to ... read more

If you ever decide to visit Valencia, or Spain in general - try to book the dates in March, when the biggest fiesta in Valencian Community is taking place! From my personal point of view Fallas is a celebration worth seeing at least once in life. We had been studying about it at school and I had always imagined it as something similar to Thanksgiving New York City parade full of big wooden sculptures which will be at the end burned down. I soon found out it is much more than a huge wooden creation - Every "Falla" is created with close attention to detail and many times it has its own, usually ironic or critical meaning of something or someone in the Spanish society. Each barrio (=neighbourhood) is later competing to win the title of ... read more

Geo: 39.4702, -0.376804Walked to the Palau de la Musica for a 10am tour. Designed by Lluis Domenech i Montaner, Antoni Gaudi's university teacher and subsequent intense rival. In the day (turn of the 20th©), Montaner was The Man and Gaudi was the crazy upstart. Now, of the seven UNESCO heritage sites in Barcelona, two are Montaner's and five are Gaudi's.Drove back to Madrid via Valencia. Was pleasantly reassured to see many orange groves near the city. Cracked €30 for a single road toll payment, but the road systems are terrific.... read more

Hi everyone Today we visited Barcelona and I didn’t have great expectations of what it would be like. It was a bit dismal and rain was sprinkling as we waited for the bus to get to the city because it was a bit far to walk. We paid out our 52 euros and toured around Barcelona in an open top bus with the option of seeing over 40 places of interest. That was the best investment of the trip. We went to an incredible number of places including a number of sites from the 1992 Olympic Games. The people of Barcelona are still really proud of having held the games. While Barcelona is a magical place now, I’m sure it wasn’t back then and ordinary people, as well as the government but in a great deal ... read more

Valencia on eastern coast of Spain 10 Sept 2013 After driving nearly 380 kms through reasonably flat countryside, we arrived in Valencia on the coast of Spain. As soon as we arrived in this city of Valencia, the city of over 800,000 people, famous for its ceramics has also added the most expensive new multi-building precinct in Europe – the Ciudad De Las Artes Y Las Ciencias named this series of buildings didn’t have a marketing bone in their body!!!!! The 4 major buildings are for Art & Science, Museum for cinema and theatre (incl and IMAX Dome), Science Museum, and a massive aquarium. There is also a landscaped garden with local plants. Most of the buildings appear to float in water as there is water all around them. The complex has several restaurants as well. ... read more
