Background: Spain's powerful world empire of the 16th and 17th centuries ultimately yielded command of the seas to England. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating civil war (1936-39). In the second half of the 20th century, Spain has played a catch-up role in the western international community; it joined the EU in 1986. Continuing challenges include Basque Fatherland and Liberty (ETA) terrorism and further reductions in unemployment.

Ok heres the story. ive taken a position. i wont describe it as a job because the is no monetary compensation. Ive joinded the crew of a sailboat headed from valencia, spain around gibralter, up through portugal, past france and over to the UK. its a long trip, and may take as long as a month to make. the real highlights are free room and board while on the boat, a free boat tour up the atlantic coast, and free sailing instruction from the mechanics, helming, and navigating. Who knows what else might come of it. We set sail on friday, [View Full Entry]

The bio kids took our last research excursion to Les Rotes and Denia Beach. The beach was fantastic, with rocky shores and a few cliffs falling straight down to the sea. But the real question is: was this trip project or play...or both? To summarize, my partner and I researched algae zonation. We spent several hours crawling around rocks and snorkeling in water to learn about algae. (fun stuff...hehe. At one point, a crab grabbed my measuring tape and tried to escape down its hole. Luckily, I saved the tape!) After that, we hiked and rock-climbed (literally) to a cave, visited [View Full Entry]

Oma and me in front of the bull ring
We happened to watch a lot of the bull fighting on tv that week - you want to look away but you cant!
There are two interesting things to talk about in this blog, the first involves, dogs, ex-druggies and bonsai....and the second, my grandma (oma) coming to visit us in a tiny village in Valencia! Mario and I have been lucky enough to get to travel together around Spain because of his work with Bonsai. We left Alicante for one week to go to Valencia. We were given an apartment in a tiny town called La Pobla Llarga close to the place where Mario would be working. We were very surprised when we were first taken to the huge complex. Not only did [View Full Entry]

Today is my last in Spain and it has been a whirlwind in every sense of the word! I have totally neglected my chronicling for the past two weeks, so I’m going to attempt a summarized account of my time here now. Here goes… I’m going to quote my new Brazilian friend, Yuri, in saying, “The best of Morocco was the airport upon arrival and then the airport upon departure.” We met while waiting to check into our Easyjet flight at Casablanca airport. It all began over a jar of peanut butter after he and his two Hungarian travel partners sat [View Full Entry]

The biology students took a 3 day trip into the Pitarque Mountains. Our little 12 passenger van chugged along a winding, curvy road to the top, passing several quaint mountain towns precariously perched at the peaks and sides of lower mountains as we headed further and further north. The mountains were breathtaking. Our final destination was Boixar, a little town of population 7. We unloaded at things at a hostel in the town. I believe that the hostel was just about filled to capacity by our group of 14 people. I couldn't have asked for more from the hostel. Our host [View Full Entry]

I woke to find it was raining, what a crock, this place is supposed to have 320 sunshine days a year, why the heck did it have to rain when we were there. I decided to go back to bed in the hope it would clear up. By mid morning it had cleared enough for us to go out. We decided food was in order but instead of something cheap and nasty we opted to go to the market. It was huge and rather daunting as it was full of locals and no one spoke any English. We did some scouting, [View Full Entry]

I was sad to leave Barcelona, but Valencia was calling. We jumped on the bus at 8am and the guide biffed on Mr and Mrs Smith, I realised that the last time I had seen it was in Suva, Fiji many moons ago. I think I may have had a nap or two before we neared our destination, I was awoken to find out some Valencia facts. They have on average 320 days of sunshine a year, which may explain why oranges are one of the areas main exports. Valencia is also the home of paella, hosts La Tomatina and has [View Full Entry]
