Valencia Travel Blogs

Background: Spain's powerful world empire of the 16th and 17th centuries ultimately yielded command of the seas to England. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating civil war (1936-39). In the second half of the 20th century, Spain has played a catch-up role in the western international community; it joined the EU in 1986. Continuing challenges include Basque Fatherland and Liberty (ETA) terrorism and further reductions in unemployment.

Streets lined with orange trees
Streets lined with orange trees
I did say that Valencia was more than just oranges however its hard to avoid the orange trees. It just makes a whole lot of sense. Councils are forever planting trees so why not fruit trees?
It is Friday morning and an early start as I check out of the Hotel Petit Palace Italia bound for the coastal city of Valencia about 350km south of Barcelona and the same distance west of Madrid. With its idyllic coastal location, Valencia enjoys a Mediterranean climate, warm dry summers, mild winters, and beautiful beaches. Having arrived in Madrid in my overcoat it would be a relief to pack it away at least for the next few days as I wind up the Spanish leg of the trip first in Valencia and then Barcelona. The train journey took three and a [View Full Entry]

Well another week and a half has past, plenty of shit to report but as I said, I suck at blogging. What to say about Barcelona.... Barcelona is a crazy city. Very vibrant, parties non stop. Also full of pick pockets and theives. I did not even get off the train before I started hearing horror stories about people getting their shit stolen on the beach, on the metro, etc. So you would think I would be extra carefull. Which I really was. Until I got drunk. Seriously, you all know how much I love red wine. And it is just [View Full Entry]

I am here in Valencia! Have been since Friday. So much has happened since then. First of all, we missed our train on Friday morning due the the pub crawl on Thurs. night. We got there just as they were closing the boarding, so we had to wait and take another train at 2:30. Luckily they were very nice and exchanged our tickets. Since then I've moved into my apartment. I'm living with Laura from Venezuela (26), Lidia from Austria (24), and Lukas from Germany (22). Both Laura and Lidia are very nice, but I haven't met Lukas yet since he [View Full Entry]

I´ve discovered the Holy Grail! I don´t know what all the fuss has been about all these years. It´s been safely sequestered here in Valencia at Santa Iglesia Catedral since 1437! Monty Python and his gang were way off track in their comedic Grail Quest. Tom Hanks too, was following a blind alley in The Da Vinci Code. The chalice on display here was created in the 1st Century BC, and reputedly used by Jesus Christ at the Last Supper. This very historic cathedral was founded in 1262 on the foundations of a Mosque which was in turn built upon the [View Full Entry]

Hello again. We´ve now moved onto Valencia further up the coast heading towards France. The city is beautiful with all sorts of old catholic and roman relics. There´s a cathedral here that supposedly holds the Holy Grail according to the Vatican so we´ll have to go check that out and report back to any DaVinci Code fans out there. We´re in a great little hostel with all sorts of other tourists our age which is nice after the hotels in Almeria and Cabo de Gata. A little about Cabo de Gata. It was this very small town stuck out in the [View Full Entry]
