Background: Spain's powerful world empire of the 16th and 17th centuries ultimately yielded command of the seas to England. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating civil war (1936-39). In the second half of the 20th century, Spain has played a catch-up role in the western international community; it joined the EU in 1986. Continuing challenges include Basque Fatherland and Liberty (ETA) terrorism and further reductions in unemployment.

This past weekend we all loaded into buses and headed down to Valencia, the land of the oranges! On the way down we stopped in a small town called Tarragona. In Tarragona we toured the ancient ruins and ate lunch by the ocean. Some of the ruins included a giant stadium where they held chariot races. I think the best part of the entire trip there was when Lauren, Tina, and I bought our own lunch and ate it by the ocean. We had "pan con tomate" which is just tomatoe rubbed on bread. It is a traditional Catalan dish and [View Full Entry]

Well, I think I've finally adjusted to the time here. It wasn't so difficult since I had been traveling for nearly 22 hours by the time I got here on Thursday and pretty much just went to bed early and woke up at a time most people would wake up here. I live with a host mother who is a single, older woman living in an apartment by herself and making a living by renting out her two rooms to students in this program. I've definitely lucked out having my own room, and the girl in the other room (Mariel) is [View Full Entry]

Spring 2004 Valencia has something of a reputation of being the real deal Spanish experience - a proper big city without the hordes of tourists that have overrun such as Barcelona. The food, the nightlife and the football were also reputed to be up to the mark. In between the above of course there has to be something else to do during the day - other than sleep off the previous night’s excess, but more of that later. We got a taxi straight to the hotel from the airport, although that was arguably an unnecessary extravagance and set off in search [View Full Entry]

Hello again, I just got back from my weekend orientation trip to Tarragona and Valencia, which are both south of Barcelona. I left early Friday morning and we spent about three hours in Tarragona visiting the ancient Roman ruins there. There is a huge cathedral, as well as an old gladiator ring just by the water, which was featured in the movie Gladiator. After visiting Tarragona we headed further south to Valencia, which is right on the water and the third largest city in all of Spain (behind Madrid and Valencia). It's very pretty, and the beaches are amazing, but [View Full Entry]

Het ontvangst in Valencia bestond uit palmbomen, 21graden, zonnetje en 2 en een half uur aan metro om mn kamer (met sleutel) te vinden. De eerste dag op school... school... doet me denken aan... ja .. school. Even wennen dus..

For the second consecutive Thanksgiving, I have found myself outside the boudaries of the United State of America. Given that I have done this before it did not seem as strange as it did the first time to be celebrating a holiday in a place where most people didn't even realize it was a holiday. So, like the Goulash I had in Budapest last Thanksgiving, I celebrated this Thanksgiving with another distinctive dish, this time paella in Valencia. We arrived in Valencia by train from Madrid and the first thing I thought was that Valencia is more like the Spain I [View Full Entry]

What a warm atmosphere! What a beautiful city! Ok, I'm not here to talk about cities. My thing of the moment is open landscapes, fields, mountains, little villages... But how can I resist the charms of Valencia? Its surprisingly glamorous old town and its fabulous modern complexes! I fell in love with this place. Almost at first sight. It took me a little while to tune in, to let the images sink my pupils. The huge squares. The ancient buildings so well looked after. Then I felt the warmth, the jolly pace people seem to move at - not too slowly [View Full Entry]

Sorry, I wrote this a few days ago, but I'm just now getting the chance to post it. Today we leave Barcelona and I got to Madrid to meet my host family (finally). As I write this I’m on a bus from Granada to Valencia, our next stop on the Mediterranean. I’m not sure which town we’re driving thru right now but there are huge mountains to my left and the blue sea is to my right. I reluctantly boarded the bus leaving Granada at 9 this morning. So here I am, about a half hour past Alicante. I didn’t expect [View Full Entry]

Today and tomorrow are our first classes of Spanish. I was put in the elementary spanish class with Emma, Matt, Kezia, and Cody. Our teacher is Cristina. She seems nice but a bit strict. I'm afraid this might be too elementary for me at my level, but hopefully it'll pick up. [View Full Entry]
