I am backpacking through Europe with my friend. We start in Amsterdam, but who knows where we'll end up. We'll be staying in hostels, eating sandwiches, and taking public transit. Hopefully, we'll have enough last 6 months. You can see our progress in this blog. How far will we make it? How long will we last?

- Update - The Europe trip has come and gone. We made it 2 months together, then I continued another month and a half on my own. Now the blog continues with my next travels abroad.

I wasn’t sure if my 3-hour flight from Tokyo to Seoul would warrant any food, but apparently it was deserving of a full meal. Gotta love international flying. After landing at Incheon and going through immigration and customs, I called my friend, Brian, who I would be staying with, and told him I was on my way. But first I needed to stop at an ATM and withdraw some money. However, when asked how much I wanted to withdraw, I was not given any “Fast Cash” options, which are very useful when you haven’t researched the exchange rate of the currency you are about to withdraw. Luckily, there was a currency exchange right next to the ATM, and I was able to lean over and determine that it was a little over 1000 won per US ... read more

The train from Osaka to Nagoya only took a little over an hour, but this time I expected the short commute. Nagoya station, where I arrived, reminded me in many ways of Osaka station, and may have been even bigger. It took a few minutes to walk outside of the station where I was greeted by a pair of twin towers and a twist tower. My time was running out in Japan, but I still wanted to explore Nagoya at least a little to get a feel for the city. I had also been in contact with a friend of a friend, Ben, who lived in Yokohama, a city just outside of Tokyo. Ben graciously offered me a place to stay and to show me around Yokohama. That meant I could spend one full day in ... read more

As I waited for the train at Kyoto Station I was almost positive that I was waiting for the right train, except for one detail about the sign. Before taking any public transit in a foreign country it is not enough for me to find the train that says my destination, but I must also rule out every other possibility as well before I commit. In this case, everything on the sign for the train made sense and was in accordance with where I wanted to go except for a symbol next to the car spaces. The platform numbers basically told you how far out from the center of the platform you could stand and expect to be in front of a car when it arrived. For example, trains that are 12 cars long extend through ... read more

I arrived bright and early at 7 am in Kyoto, and began the hike to my hostel. The Kyoto station had some very modern looking buildings, but it wasn’t long before I came to the first temple ground. I would soon learn that Kyoto is filled with temples. I arrived at the hostel only a couple hours later, but they were not quite ready for me yet. The hostel owner let me drop off my backpack, but asked that I return at 3 pm. I was a little bitter that he wouldn’t even let me sit down in the lobby after my 8-hour bus ride and 3 mile hike, but I soon realized he was actually doing me a huge favor. The Kyoto Imperial Palace grounds were nearby, so I thought I’d have a look and ... read more

After an 11-hour flight out of Los Angeles, I landed at Narita Airport outside Tokyo. From there I would have to take a train for over an hour more before reaching my destination. As I looked out the train window I saw mostly farmland at first, but the population density quickly increased before exploding as the train entered Tokyo. By the time I arrived at Asakusabashi station, it was already dark, but the map the hostel provided was very good, and it didn’t take me long to find the Anne Hostel. After checking in I promptly fell asleep. As expected, I woke up early the next morning, and set out to explore the center of the Asakusa area, which was just north of Asakusabashi, a sub-division of Asakusa. As I walked down the streets towards the ... read more

My arrival in Madrid was somewhat routine. I left the bus station and walked through the streets I had preselected to get to the hostel, which was not too far away. Yet the whole walk I felt it sink in that this was my final destination. This is the last time that I would be finding a new hostel, meeting new people, and discovering a new city. I checked into my hostel and went to my room where I met Rodrigo, my roommate. Rodrigo was a Mexican who had family in San Diego, and had spent a lot of time there. He was a big Chargers fan, and so we talked about football for a while. I quickly realized that he knew a lot more about football than I did, but I enjoyed talking about the ... read more

The bus ride from Tarifa to Seville was pretty short. Although I wasn’t sure if one of the prior stops was Seville, there was no mistaking it once we arrived. Many richly decorated buildings stood on the streets as we rode closer into the city. The bus station was about a 20-minute walk from the hostel. I checked in and sat down in the common room to take care of some business. After a while I was asked if I wanted to join a group for some drinks in the park, to which I accepted. A group of about 15 walked to the park which was comically close to the bus station where I had just arrived. There I engaged in conversation, somewhat routinely, with the Australians, Canadians, and random people from various other countries. Of ... read more

After riding a bus for over 12 hours from Valencia, I was still not in Tarifa. I arrived at a town called Algeciras, where I needed to go to another bus stop and take another bus. Luckily, the other bus stop was not very far from the one where I was dropped off. Algeciras was another port town near the southern point of Spain. I might have opted to stay there when planning my route, because ferries left for Tangier from there as well, but there were not as many hostels available as in Tarifa. Tarifa was a short 45 minute bus ride, and I only paid 2.10 EUR for the trip. Once I arrived in Tarifa, the first thing I noticed was all the surf shops. I found my hostel and talked to some people ... read more

I first heard of Valencia as a good place to visit when I was in Budapest. From there I found that many would agree. Since it seemed to be a good stopping point on my way to the southern tip of Spain, I decided to give it a try. I arrived in the afternoon and walked toward my hostel. I had seen from the map that I would be crossing a long stretch of park into the inner city, or old town. Once there, I saw that the park was actually a bit lower than the surrounding city, and had bridges crossing it at consistent intervals. Looking at the map, I thought it was as If there had been a river here at one point, perhaps that dried up in time. I would later learn that ... read more

The ferry ride to Barcelona was pretty interesting. As I walked towards the pier I saw the “ferry” I would be boarding. It looked more like a cruise ship. As I continued toward the ship I passed a girl who was carrying quite a bit of luggage. She asked for help carrying it, and I grabbed one of her suitcases. She had booked a junior room for this ferry ride, and, after hitting it off, we went to eat dinner in the cafeteria after dropping off her luggage in her room. Her name was Ana, and she was from Barcelona. She was working in Rome for 2 years, but her job was relocating her to Paris. Ana spoke 5 different languages, but when I told her everywhere I had been, she conceded that I had been ... read more
