Background: Spain's powerful world empire of the 16th and 17th centuries ultimately yielded command of the seas to England. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating civil war (1936-39). In the second half of the 20th century, Spain has played a catch-up role in the western international community; it joined the EU in 1986. Continuing challenges include Basque Fatherland and Liberty (ETA) terrorism and further reductions in unemployment.

Hey everybody! So I am super behind in my travel blogs, so I am going to skip the rest of my spring break blogs for now (dont worry I will come back and do them when I have time!), and go on to my trips that I have had since then. That way, I can try to stay up to date and then when I have time I will fill in a blog or two about my spring break. So after getting back from spring break, I was exhausted, so I had a nice week at home. Lauren’s friends from home [View Full Entry]

The EU is looked to world wide as a leader on a variety of fronts; progressive social policies, environmental laws, cutting edge technology, and economic efficiency. However the reality of living in Europe can be quite different. While Spain is certainly notorious for carefree attitudes, and refusals to abandon old ways in favour of tradition, one wonders how this country can exist and thrive within the European community. Sometimes the examples are charming; an entire soccer stadium of 50,000 smoking and eating jamon bocadillos, a donkey pulling a cart through the orange groves of La Huerta [View Full Entry]

Friday, 14th March - Mr T's birthday! First thing he said today - "Cannot wait to open my cards!". Took wind from his sails when I handed him a bundle to open, as whilst home people had rushed out buying said cards for me to bring back. Had a lovely breakfast sitting in sun and I pegged his birthday cards on the washing line! Left site at 12 without a plan and Andy singing to "Destination unknown" - his favourite at moment. Headed north desperately trying to find a beach road. Unfortunately this was difficult as most of this undeveloped coast [View Full Entry]

Hola Todos! So before this next weekend gets underway, I figured I'd better fill you all in on what's been going on since the "Paris Fiasco," as I now call it. Then again, it did make me think on my feet and adapt. What good is four months in Europe if I don't get stuck in a country where I don't know the language and without a phone? I think everyone should have to deal with it. Anyways... On Wednesday after I returned from Paris (February 27), FC Barca played Valencia at Camp Nou in the Copa Del Rey, which is [View Full Entry]

Valencia is a town south from Barcelona, about midway to Granada. Our program went for a day trip to check out all the history that exists within the city. We even went to the church that houses the Holy Grail…yes the true Holy Grail. Unless of course, you don’t believe the grail is a cup and rather the bones of Mary M, a labyrinth map, or something of these sorts. Valencia is known for its new Museo de Artes y Sciencias, which has a very contemporary design and lately is what brings all the tourists, such as ourselves, in. They also [View Full Entry]

First off, I am very tired right now, but I´ll try to make this blog interesting anyway. I spent two and half days in Barcelona which was pretty good. Barcelona is a really cool city, very large and it has a lot to offer. The days in the city involved an absurd amount of walking, but especially in cities with a lot of cool stuff, taking the bus or metro makes you miss out on a lot as you go from stop to stop (plus it costs more). The first day I walked through the Gothic quarter of the city [View Full Entry]

Well, It's strange to think I've been here for a month and a day. It seems like I've been here forever, though. I've pretty much stayed in Valencia most of this time, even though I know a ton of other students who have been traveling every weekend -- Paris, London, Madrid, etc., etc. I look forward to taking a few weekend trips in the future, but it's kind of nice to be here and finally know my way around (yes, the map stays in my room instead of in my pocket these days). I'm glad I haven't been gone every weekend [View Full Entry]

Fun Trip Valencia 31-01 - 04-02-2008. Dear Friends, This travelblog is about Valencia. We stayed here for 5 days. It's a great place to be and it is only a two hour flight from Amsterdam. You can do here a lot of things: visit historic sites, look at the futuristic buildings and enjoy the food, the wine and the special flavours of the kitchen of Valencia. Look at the pictures and see it by yourself. See you next time on our travelblog Love Monkey and Bear and our friends Hettie and Serge [View Full Entry]
