Background: Spain's powerful world empire of the 16th and 17th centuries ultimately yielded command of the seas to England. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating civil war (1936-39). In the second half of the 20th century, Spain has played a catch-up role in the western international community; it joined the EU in 1986. Continuing challenges include Basque Fatherland and Liberty (ETA) terrorism and further reductions in unemployment.

A bit of a delay, but technical details sorted so ... onto Valencia Weekends away are always nice, but somehow being in London they are just that little bit nicer as you can experience a little bit of another culture for a couple of days. In keeping with my promises to myself in moving to Europe, this weekend I joined 3 random strangers for a long weekend in Valencia, Spain. Thursday afternoon I booked off work for the 'express' journey to Stanstead. Given my history with British Rail I should have known that it wasn't going to go smoothly and right [View Full Entry]

Hola a todos! I realize that I haven't written anything substantial in awhile, so I am going to try to cover the last week in this entry. I can not believe that I have already almost been in Spain for a month, the time is seeming to fly by! Everything here is good, Molly is moved in and settled with our family here, and it is so much fun in the household, Laudi is hilarious and we all have a good time together. I am really REALLY glad that I decided to live with a host family, I already feel like [View Full Entry]

Our stop after Granada was Valencia, a city we had heard only good things about. Unfortunately, when we arrived we discovered that everything we had heard was somewhat misleading. Valencia turned out to be an decent city, but lacking anything really special or riveting. In addition, from the moment we got there something just felt off to me, and I ended up just not enjoying the time spent there. We ended up only staying a day and a half. There are only a few interesting things that I can talk about regarding Valencia. In the bullfighting arena they had a bazaar [View Full Entry]

Scene: Jon and Jessie finish typing their blog with a final click and walk out of the brightly lit computer cafe onto a dusky Granadan street... making our way back to the Pension we´re staying at, weaving through dim narrow streets crowded by old churches. It was still early, and the streets were quiet; but as we made our way back we took a different side street than normal and passed a charming little wine bar. Above the door was an open window that a mellow jazz wafted out of. We passed it, then turned back to see the menu. A [View Full Entry]

hey everyone!! ok i haven't written in like 5 days, but that is just because there is so much to do here, and who wants to be cooped up inside writing when i can be outside exploring. but ok...so the last 5 days... oh Molly moved in to my host house! Her host family was HORRIBLE, and so she just couldn't take it anymore and so she talked to ISA and they moved her here! She just moved in yesterday, but i am really excited to have a roommate now, even though i was fine before. Our host mom, Laudi, has [View Full Entry]

Ok so I know that I arrived in Valencia a week ago, but venga(come on), i have been doing a ton of things since i got here and finally feel situated in mi casa here and my español is improving immensely. A downfall to this is that sometimes now I forget the English word for things, or even worse spell them wrong...its driving me crazy!! But ok I am going to try to cover this last week in one blog, possibly two. Vale (ok, but a word only used in España), our bus got into Valencia at about 6 in the [View Full Entry]

Bombs? Europe » Spain » Valencian Community » Valencia
So I was trying to go to sleep last night and kept hearing these incredibly loud explosions. I figured it must be construction or something, but as I was laying in bed the horrible explosion noises just got more frequent and intense. The sound kept reverberating off all of the buildings, so you could even feel the loud bangs. Bombs? I kept picturing my street getting blown apart. If freaked me out so I ran to my roommate's room. She was a little freaked out too. We looked out of her window, though, and people were walking by or driving in [View Full Entry]

Helaas is dit komende weekend mn laatste weekend [View Full Entry]

Hey everyone!! Well as you probably already know, I am now in Valencia, Spain which will be my home for the next 4 months!! I am so excited to finally be here, but this last week and a half has been beyond crazy!! I left the states on Tuesday, January 15, and, with a 4 hour layover in Philly (which by the way is most def NOT the city of brotherly love), i ARRIVED IN Madrid at 10 AM on the 16th. The flight wasn´t too bad thanks to my ability to sleep absolutely anywhere, and the adrenaline from all the [View Full Entry]
