Today was a mix of aimless wandering through the historic centre of Valencia and in part trying to hit a couple of specific spots. Valencia has definitely left an impression on me. I would move here. It is pretty and clean. There are subways and buses to get around (although I've done every thing on foot!). The people are incredibly friendly. There are beautiful parks and there is a beach a stone's throw from here. The architecture is incredible ... a mix of old and new within one street. And paella EVERYWHERE. Lovely, lovely, lovely. My aimless wandering first took me to the Central Market. I just love these types of markets and wish that I could take some of this stuff home. It is an assault on all of the senses. There was Serrano ham ... read more

I left Barcelona this morning and made my way to Valencia. It is about a three and half hour train ride which went well and was very uneventful. The views were beautiful ... filled with orange trees and the odd old fortress built up on a hill. I could easily walk to my hotel and I found it right away with no problems (I just took a right at the bullfighting ring and I was on my way ... not a sentence that I get to say very often!!). My room was not ready but the young girl at the reception checked me in right away, gave me a run-down of what I needed to know and a map of the city (she kept circling things on the map and saying "this is pretty" and "this ... read more

OK, today I went to the mercado centrale to begin with and found some nice lunch items. After this I went to the beach. Unfortunately it was nowhere near as warm today as it was yesterday and by the time I got to the beach it was overcast. I stayed there for a few hours before it started raining and then I headed back to the city to go for another wonder in the small alleys in the north of the city. That was about it for today. Unfortunately at no point was it warm enough to go for a swim in the sea as this is my last stop on the Mediterranean before heading inland. I am therefore slightly disappointed that I never actually went for a swim in the Mediterranean. It just never seemed ... read more

OK I got on the train at ten o´clock this morning OK. Arrived in Valencia around 1ish. I found the hostel OK, it is very central. I saw the mercado centrale today (unfortunately it was shut). Even though I couldn´t go in I was still very imperssed with the outside. After checking into my hostel I went for a walk around the city. I saw where the students are protesting. All very interesting. I then went for a wonder around the narrow streets in the north of the city, which are so wonderful for just getting lost in. I spent a couple of hours doing that before heading back to my hostel. My plan for tomorrow is to go to the beach.... read more

Such a contrast There are so many ancient sites to see in Valencia and throughout Spain that many travelers miss or ignore one of the most beautiful complexes to be seen anywhere. The City of Arts and Sciences (Valencian: Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències, Spanish: Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias) is a marvel of modern architecture. We were not sure we would be able to visit this complex of buildings. It was not close to the historic district where our hotel was located. One of the desk clerks told us which bus to catch. We decided to be brave and head out in a bus we knew nothing about for a destination which was 'somewhere' in this enormous city. After all, if it did not go where we wanted to go or ... read more

This weekend, we went to Valencia. Valencia is located in the southeast of Spain, right along the coast. Just like Granada, we took a bus from Madrid which is super convenient for us. We show up when we are ready and this time, we literally ran right on a bus. The ride there was about 4.5 hours and pretty uncomfortable this time. We booked a hostel that was about a fifteen minute walk from the bus station, and we really enjoyed the whole walk. It was warmer in Valencia and covered in palm/orange trees. Our hostel was nice and we had a room just the four of us (Sarah, Kristen, Alanna, and I), which was very lucky. Our hostel was conveniently located for the nightlife and overall, which made it really easy for us to go ... read more

The Mercado Central is somewhat like the Lexington Market in Baltimore or the Reading Market in Philadelphia only larger and more lovely. We visited early in the morning, just after it opened. Fruits, vegetables, meats and sea food ... almost any kind of food you might like can be found in the market. It became pretty obvious that the Spanish really like ham, see the photo of the hams hanging. I noticed many were from Prague. I did not know that Prague or Czech ham is so well known. There are vendor stalls at each end of the building, along each side and along the three or four aisles that run the length of the building. We had really enjoyed the open air markets in Figueres when we first arrived in Spain. Our first morning we ... read more

Walk and walk and walk We walked and walked and walked today. We wanted to see as much as possible, not just in Valencia, but everywhere we visited in Spain. Jardin Botanical Gardens This afternoon we walked to the Jardin Botanical Garden. I would guess the garden is a mile or so from our hotel ... but we had walked a number of miles before heading off to the garden. When we stopped at the ticket office to pay, the man asked if we were pensioners. When we said yes, he said the garden was free for all pensioners. Wow! Spain really is wonderful to older folk. It is an interesting garden and if you visit Valencia we recommend you visit this garden. There are a number of interesting plants. Also there are a lot of ... read more
