Background: Spain's powerful world empire of the 16th and 17th centuries ultimately yielded command of the seas to England. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating civil war (1936-39). In the second half of the 20th century, Spain has played a catch-up role in the western international community; it joined the EU in 1986. Continuing challenges include Basque Fatherland and Liberty (ETA) terrorism and further reductions in unemployment.

I got to see all the famous paintings I've been learning about in the states
Ah! Finalmente estoy en Valencia con Internet y un telefono celular. But first I will rewind to the traveling on Tuesday. The plane rides were not as long as I was expecting which was a relief; I think I arrived in London at about 1:00am estados unidos time. Although this means I did not sleep at all on the flight from Chicago to London. In London I met some other students going to Valencia with ISA so we traveled together to Madrid. During that flight was the only time I slept which meant I arrived in Madrid on about 1.5 hours [View Full Entry]

A welcome change of weather and a trip made possible by cheap internal flights using Ryanair. much better weather and a lovely old centre. The market which was better than Barcas, loved to wander around the streets and look at stuff then theres the dried up river bed and the wacky building on the way to the sea and the aquarium which was expensive but good and had a decent dolphin show! went to the beach which was pretty overcast and deserted on the day i went, would like to come back in summer ! Cambrils-Salou Cambrils is a small little town with the beach as the main attraction. The campsite is just a little walk away from the centre of town . Got the bikes out and cycle there for the afternoon. We longed the beach up and down, the weather is just nice around 22. It’s just haven. The next day we cycled to a bigger town called Salou situated some 7 miles away on the coast. We had lunch at a McDo in the hope that they’ll have WiFi . But unfortunately they didn’t have any. Anyway the wifi was just an excuse; [View Full Entry]

Th large open-air market in downtown Valencia
Its been 3 weeks since my last post. A pessimist might say, "well he forgot everything." But maybe "i just gave it a chance to ferment into something better." Either way, its been a while, and between low access to internet and the chaos of returning back to school 12 hours before my first class (arrived at 9pm on the 11th after 20 hours traveling with an 8 am class on the 12th) I am finally getting a chance to put pen to paper...errrr... fingers to plastic... 4-hr bus ride to Valencia was pretty cozy. I arrived at a bus station, picked up another bus, then reached the next home. Unlike Barcelona, Valencia was smaller than I gathered from the map. If I wasn’t careful, I could overshoot the street easily. It was still raining in Valencia and of course, it was Sunday, and a lot of things were closed. I wandered around a bit in search of a glass of horchata. At least to me, it’s sort of like vanilla-flavored soy milk…not overly sweet, thicker than the Mexican versoin. Love it :D Monday was still drizzling. I [View Full Entry]

We were bored on the tour...
so then we started to take pictures!
This past weekend our group went to Valencia. After a 4 hour bus ride, we arrived and immediately met our tour guide to see the city! We saw the Cathedral, which to be honest looks like every other cathedral we have visited in Spain, a palace/really pretty house, and just walked around the city. It was nice except that the tour guide just kept talking and talking about completely irrelevant things, I think she just wanted to dictate to us everything she had ever learned about, things not even concerning Valencia. Anyways, the director of our program was getting really angry [View Full Entry]

Its Monday morning here in Valencia, today I’m taking the train to Barcelona- the last leg of my journey in Spain. Valencia was a very pleasant experience and being near the coast (even if I didn’t go to the beach) made a change form the inland cities and towns that I had visited. Valencia’s a great city and its residents are very friendly. I had some lovely food during my stay here and I would recommend it especially if you want to spend some time on the coast and if you are also visiting Barcelona. The trip between these two famous [View Full Entry]

Inside the Mercado Central you have so many options when it comes to citrus. Oranges, Clementines and Mandarins are sold on every stall
After a sleep-in (by my standards) I decided I would Valencia’s fresh food market the Mercado Central. Situated only five minutes from the hotel the market is THE place for locals to buy their fresh produce. The market is open Monday- Saturday and if you want to taste the real Valencia I recommend a visit and mingle amongst the locals and curious tourists. From its fruit and vegetables, fresh fish and cured meats (including the ever present jamon) this market has the lot. Of course there are lots of oranges on sale (at less than 1 euro per kg) as well [View Full Entry]

Weitere Informationen folgen...
