Background: Spain's powerful world empire of the 16th and 17th centuries ultimately yielded command of the seas to England. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating civil war (1936-39). In the second half of the 20th century, Spain has played a catch-up role in the western international community; it joined the EU in 1986. Continuing challenges include Basque Fatherland and Liberty (ETA) terrorism and further reductions in unemployment.

Also hier in Valencia bin ich jetzt genau 4 Stunden.

I finally got a moment without Elvira or Ricardo in the house this morning. Enjoy.... Lizzy and I have gotten used to the size but I think you all will find these pictures amusing :) I got a gym membership yesterday and went for the first time this morning, I guess I'm staying awhile! Last week flew by and we had a crazy Friday! For our Spanish Culture class we took a field trip to La Lonja; it's really not that exciting or pretty so I didn't take any pictures of it. But right across the street was "el mercado central." It's this huge building filled with meat, seafood, pastry, fruit, and vegetable shops. Everything is so fresh; maybe too fresh! The seafood was still crawling, eyes remain on the FULL bodies of animals, along with fur and eyelashes! Mom and Dad, I am taking you there when you visit Valencia, it is an experience [View Full Entry]

I LOVE SPAIN! ;) It’s so hard to explain how wonderful it is in Valencia…sea, sun, mountains, palm trees, what else could a girl ask for? It is the perfect mix. A few days ago I went to the Botanical Gardens in the city…so lovely. The energy of the city is exciting, but as soon as you get into the garden you feel this calming peace. It’s amazing. The garden was created about a hundred years ago when it was in the middle of nowhere. They originally planned for [View Full Entry]

This one will be short. A long and fun entry with lots of pictures is coming next! The first week here I was stressing over my ultimate goal of studying abroad to come back fluent. A good number of the students are more advanced than I am in speaking skills and it was discouraging me. But I've realized those who speak well have traveled A LOT. To keep it short, point is: I can already tell that my ability to translate into English will be better just from hearing people talk around me and reading more. It's hard to explain if [View Full Entry]

I just got done eating the most delicious orange ever. A family member of a girl from another homestay somehow gets a lot of oranges so she brought Lizzy a whole bag today! We're hiding them in our closet for snacks haha :) It was exactly what I anticipated a real Valencia orange to taste like. Lizzy and I went to a bar last night that offers Salsa lessons. It was kind of hard but very fun. It was also nice not to see a lot of Americans! Right as we were leaving a couple Colombian boys asked us to come [View Full Entry]

My View!
My View!
This is what I see everyday when I look out my bedroom window! See that blue near the horizon? That's the MEDITERRANEAN SEA!!
Finally in Valencia! ¡Saludos de España! I’m here in Valencia, Spain where I will be spending the next four months! I love it so far…it is the perfect mix of everything I wanted in a study abroad city. The fusion of innovation and tradition is surprising. Valencia’s downtown area consists of buildings 200 years or older, and definitely looks like the Europe I’d been picturing in my head. There is so much to explore and always something to do. There are internet cafes and clubs in these ancient buildings, which may sound strange, but in Valencia [View Full Entry]

A gorgeous, sunny day view outside my window
I saw the most adorable thing the other day when I was outside using the street phone. This dog ran out of his apartment complex with his owner, grabbed a palm tree branch and shook it around in his mouth like he had just caught a bunny rabbit. It was just too cute to see a dog carrying around a palm tree branch instead of a stick. On Friday ISA held a “rally” for us. It was supposed to be some sort of scavenger hunt around Valencia but I just went along to see new places and it was amazing. They [View Full Entry]
