Background: Spain's powerful world empire of the 16th and 17th centuries ultimately yielded command of the seas to England. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating civil war (1936-39). In the second half of the 20th century, Spain has played a catch-up role in the western international community; it joined the EU in 1986. Continuing challenges include Basque Fatherland and Liberty (ETA) terrorism and further reductions in unemployment.

Valencia day 12-13 (July 22- July 23) It was a long day of travel to get to Valencia, 9 hours by bus. The bus had a no eating or drinking policy and only planned one stop after about 4 hours. There was no toilet on board. However, the reality was that the stop was after only 2 and a half hours, and there were several 5 minute stops at bus stations along the way. The trip was less painful than anticipated, bus usually being not as comfortable as a train, but it was highways most of the way and having the [View Full Entry]

Today Amelie and I rolled into Valencia. We hopped on the 8.50am train from Grenada and spent the next 9 hours toiling in a closed compartment, sans air con, with 40 or so of our new Spanish friends. Big plans have been outlined by Teresita, who insists that we see the arts and science complexes and try some new form of melted chocolate that can be dipped in something equally delightful (fried churros being the dippee of choice in Barcelona). Tomorrow we also have plans to join in a paella and sangria party on the terrasse of the sister hostel to [View Full Entry]

Sunday morning, I overslept and had to rush out of the hostel before they charged me for an extra night. I made it to my bus stop and climbed on with my 29345792384 bags. Oy. My bus stopped near the beach and I walked towards the metro stop. BUT the ones I passed look like they didn't go back towards the school. O_o; So, I just kept walking. By the time I got to where the metro turns around and goes towards the school, I figured "Ah, I've already walked this far. It can't be long!" ˇAy dios mío! I dragged [View Full Entry]

Saturday! Alethia had to be on the 4 o'clock bus back to Madrid so, we got up EARLY to get some touring done. Most things were still closed so, we just walked around until we found a cafe that was open. We had a little breakfast and walked around a bit. There was a little park near our hostel so, we sat there for a little. It was about 9:00 by this time, but nice and quiet in the city. We didn't rest long, though, because our time was limited. We went back to the hostel so that she could check [View Full Entry]

Hola Santi Cazorla!
Hola Santi Cazorla!
Passing through Villareal
Laura had to go to Barcelona on Friday to meet a friend so, I came on to Valencia. A few days earlier, she had helped me find a hostel online and make reservations. It was one of those "nest" hostels, but I got a room to myself. (Yay to no drunk college kids!) Now, this was how I planned my day to go: - Wake up at 6:30 and get ready. - Leave Laura's house early, go to bank, and take bus to train station. - Be in Valencia by 10, hopefully. - Drop luggage off at hostel. - Find Mestalla [View Full Entry]

Walking through Valencia

To help me out, Laura took me to Valencia. We took a train and then, hopped around on the metro/trams. She wanted to show me how to get to Mestalla and my school. I'm glad that she did because the school is really far from the city center. I'd have come out of the train station and been completely lost. When we got to Valencia, we left the train station and went underground because the one we needed was like a subway. (By the way, the bullring is RIGHT NEXT TO the train station. I don't know why that was :O! [View Full Entry]

I ended up going to the beach! The Valencia beach was so gorgeous with this fine fine sand. The only problem with fine sand is that if there is any wind (which there was) and you're wearing sunscreen (which I was) you end up with a lot of sand on you. I had sand absolutely everywhere! But it was so nice! After that I organized my things for the airplane. I find I need to give myself sometime to go through my things once and awhile just to concentrate them down to one package. Then I just hung out around the [View Full Entry]
