Background: Spain's powerful world empire of the 16th and 17th centuries ultimately yielded command of the seas to England. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating civil war (1936-39). In the second half of the 20th century, Spain has played a catch-up role in the western international community; it joined the EU in 1986. Continuing challenges include Basque Fatherland and Liberty (ETA) terrorism and further reductions in unemployment.

I know I missed a day (28/12/08). That's because we did almost nothing except for driving from Granada to Valencia with a short stop in the melancolic town of Almeria. The 29th, on the contrary, was full. It was something like those Sundays when you are a child and your parents take you to the park and you feel like they would last forever, not because you get bored but because you get to know so many new things. It was practically our last day in Spain and we had planned to spend it in Valencia. Since the old part of [View Full Entry]

Nothing too big has happened since I last updated but I forget that my "daily life" isn't normal for all of you reading this so I'll just tell you a little bit about what I do and what has been happening. Valentine's Day weekend the Medieval Market was held in Valencia. It was in the Plaza de Toros (a bull fighting stadium). There were tons of vendors. Thank goodness I had just eaten lunch before I went because they had some of the most delicious looking food and snacks I had ever seen; I didn't try any of it! There was [View Full Entry]

Stone towers over 2500 years old...can you see all the holes?!?
Story: Europe; Chapter: Valencia! Hello All! Sorry this blog is kinda late. And so continues my adventure in Europe. I stayed in the city this week, but it is fun to get to know it better. There is still so much I haven't seen and experienced! I love that Valencia is a city of contrast. This weekend I walked around the city with some friends (my favorite free activity)…and did some exploring. On Saturday we went to the old quarter, which is full of old churches and buildings that all have a history. Then we went to the Torres de Quart. [View Full Entry]

Valencia is the third biggest city in Spain, and it is only two hours away from Alicante by train so seven other girls from Mizzou and I decided to take a trip there this last weekend. Our train left Friday afternoon at 5:30 and arrived in Valencia around 7:30. I’ve never ridden a train before, so that was a new experience. It stopped in the middle of nowhere a couple of times, which I found very strange, but for a ten Euro ticket, not bad. The Spanish countryside is beautiful, full of little towns, orchards, and hills (although the hills are [View Full Entry]

There was no way to get all of the city in the photo.
Barcelona was GORGEOUS; a great place to visit, but I could never live there. When we got there the bus drove us up a hill so we could get try to get a view of the entire city. It is huge and we got a view of the sea as well! Then, before checking in at the hotel we went to the Park Guell and saw some of Gaudi’s architecture. His work is intriguing; I wish I could have had the chance to visit the museum. After walking through the park we were very excited to see our hotel room and [View Full Entry]
