Day 38: Day Trip to Argostoli 7:30am I woke up to talk to my boyfriend on skype, and then got changed for our daily runs at 8:30am. I met with Isabelle at the steps and we ran for a good 40 minutes. It was cooler today than yesterday, so we didn’t break into as much of a sweat, thankfully! We could feel our workout from yesterday, but it was reassuring that we can feel the muscle gain. We got back just after 9am, I took a shower and Isabelle came over for breakfast. We cooked up a potato I had laying around, the rest of my red onions and green peppers, and added 1 of our sausages from yesterday, an egg and a slice of cheese. It was a nice hash to reward our early morning ... read more

Day 37 This morning I woke up at 6:30am to talk to my boyfriend, who was studying for an important midterm for the next day, and I talked to my sister on msn back in Vancouver. We talked for about half an hour then I let him go to study, wished my sister a good night and I went back to sleep. I got up again, but this time from knocking at my door, because I slept through my alarm and didn’t realize it was already 8:30am! Sara, Isabelle and I had planned to go for a run, if it wasn’t raining, and so since it hadn’t rained all night and the roads were still dry, I quickly changed, took a swig of water and headed out the door with my caked-on-with-mud shoes, from the dig, ... read more

Day 36 I slept in for the first time till 9am, got ready for my day and met up with Isabelle on the 2nd floor where her place is to walk down to class for 10am. There we met up with the rest of our class and washed pottery from 10am-1pm. My trench caught up with our pottery finds, we were behind by about a week, so it was nice to get all the dig chores done. Of course, the snotty girl in my trench was all up in arms when she found out that some of our pottery findings bags were given to other trench groups to help us with the work load and so they’d have something to do for 3 hours. Some trenches only had 2 small bags of pottery, and so were ... read more

Tuesday 5th October We arrived a bit earlier than expected to lovely sunny weather and tried to figure out where the hell we were going. We tried but failed to sneak onto the transfer bus, well, there was no way we were going to part with £40 for a 7km ride into town so we started walking but managed to get a lift straight away by an English woman called Andrea who lives on the island after marrying a local boy. After some directions we found our apartment which was pretty basic but clean, got some food supplies in (geez, things are expensive with the Euro!!) and had a nice cold beer in a local bar whilst figuring out what we were going to do with our week. Wednesday 6th October Admin day, the necessary evil ... read more

Day 35: Rain Day 7:30am meeting at the docks for our excavation. The day wasn’t as cool as in Pylos, but we were told to layer up. I woke up at 6:30am and skype with my boyfriend until it was time to go, while getting ready for the day and having breakfast. At the site, we found lots more bone in our baby pithos grave, a small cup (which my prof says is the BEST find he could ever wish for and that in all his 20 years of archeology, he’s always wished he could find a small cup just like this one! So we’re very proud we could make him so happy with our find), and some small hoops of jewelry (we’re not sure if it’s for a necklace or earring yet, but it’s definitely ... read more

Day 34 (From Pylos returning to Poros) We got up at 7:45am, got changed, packed up and headed down for THE MOST DELICIOUS breakfast I’ve ever had! We met Isabelle at 8:30am and headed down to the main lobby for breakfast and met up with everyone else there. We set our things down and started at the buffet line. There was: apples (I took one for the road), oranges, yogurt and honey (the yogurt went bad so I didn’t take more than 1 bite), tea and coffee (I had tea), chocolate/vanilla swirl pound cake (I had 1), lemon pound cake covered in chocolate (I tried 1), croissants with laughing cow cheese spread and jam (I tried 1), baby spanikopitas (I ate 3! :P), hard boiled eggs (I actually ate one whole one to myself!), packaged toast ... read more

Day 33 (Olympia overnight Trip) 6:30am meeting at the docks, meant waking up at 6am, getting dressed, packing up my washup stuff for the overnight trip and grabbing some snacks for the trip. We all met promptly at 6:30am in the dark, since it was before sunrise, at the bus and loaded. It was a 2 minute drive to the ferry terminal at Killini and then we boarded the ferry, pedestrian style. Everyone brought the leftover pizza from last night, except I forgot my box in my fridge. Luckily no one missed the 7th or 8th box of pizza and what we had was enough. I wasn’t in the mood to eat so early in the morning, but after the hour and a half ferry ride, I polished off the last 2 pieces of pizza from ... read more

Day 32 At 7:30am Lisa, Jen, Isabelle and I had planned to meet up and walk down to the great little café we found to write our exam; which meant I hesitantly woke up at 6:50am. We all met in Lisa’s room, trying to make as little noise as possible and headed down to write our exam around 8am. We settled into the café, grabbed a Nescafe each and Jen started to write her exam, with the 3 of us frantically searching the answers in our books and helping her all we could. She ended up with 91% and Isabelle and I wrote it second and we scored 98%, having learned from her mistakes. Lastly Lisa wrote her exam and scored 99%, the only wrong answer being something we believe to be a mistake on the ... read more

Day 31 8:30am I woke up to skype my boyfriend since today was considered a ‘rain day’ from the forecast, our prof decided to hold off on digging until Monday. So I had a restful and well-needed sleep in day! As we were talking the clouds lifted and the sun came out just outside my window. It was a great way to kick off our off-day. At about 11:30pm his time we said our goodnights and he went to sleep; while I just started my day. This 10 hr time difference is still so strange! I’ve gotten used to it, but it’s still sometimes so amazing that I’m a whole 10 hours ahead! After our convo I lazed around my place and got ready for the day. Isabelle and I were planning on going out today ... read more

Day 30 It was the last day of excavations for the week, which means it’s the last time this week that I had to put on my dirty dig clothes, change and I skyped with my parents before I headed to the bus. When we got to the site, it was really windy and the sky was filled with clouds and just a little bit of blue clouds, with the sun trying to peek through. It was windy all day and the sun disappeared for the good part of the day. Our burial group was busy revealing the inside of the pithos burial; which meant 1 person poking around with a souvlaki stick in the pithos grave, and the other 3 of us picking through dustpans filled with the dirt, small bits of pottery and tiny ... read more
