Day 29 I got up at 6:30am today and skyped with my boyfriend and family before I went off to the site. At the site, we broke off into our small burial team and continued to dig below the square slate we found yesterday and came across tons more pithos fragments. We took elevations and pictures, then changed baskets once the fragments were articulated, catalogued then removed. We changed baskets and began to reveal bone pieces and some pottery. After break, I found the first tooth; it was a baby tooth that I recognized because it looked like my old ones, and so now we have a good idea of what size, shape and color we’re looking for. We also found bits of the skull and other bones, so it looks like it might have been ... read more

Day 28 I got up later today; 7am. I was super tired, and since it was the beginning of my time-of-the-month, then I figured I deserved a sleep-in day. But that kind of bit me in the ass because I was pretty rushed to get ready. Thankfully I packed my lunch the night before and just had to throw it all in now with my frozen water bottle. I got down to the docks on time, and we headed to the site just after 7:30am. Today a trench buddy and I started to work with Isabelle and her trench member on the burial we found the week before. We joined as one group and started to excavate around the pithos container. As we got closer and closer to the pithos our prof would come by to ... read more

Day 27 I got up at 7:20am, and got ready for the day. At 7:30am my time, 9:30pm my family’s time I skyped with everyone because they were having a little party at home with my cousins, aunt and uncle, grandparents then the boyfriends (including mine). Unfortunately the power was turned off at 8am my time, 10pm theirs, so our conversation was cut off. My prof says our produce and dairy should stay cool in our fridges till 2pm (the power’s turned off for 6 hours), so we shouldn’t worry. We got down to the Hercules building back patio, and Neil was already starting up the spit with coals and wood. We brought out some chairs, and Gioria brought out some glasses and water for us. Jerry arrived at about 9:30am, and he and Gioria went ... read more

Day 26 (Saturday, October 02, 2010) I slept in this morning till about 9:30am this morning, and it was long awaited! I had the 2nd half of my yogurt with strawberry jam in it (the yogurt I buy comes plain so I flavor it myself), some cheese and crackers and an apple for breakfast. I brought out my laptop onto my patio, because the internet was acting out in my room. At around 11am I went to see what Isabelle was up to, because Lisa invited us out for coffee and breakfast at Vasilis’ daughter’s café along the docks, but I had eaten already and Isabelle had just brought down her hash she fried up in her room. So instead, the 2 of us hung out on my patio, her booking her flight to Paris for ... read more

Day 24 Today I woke up at 6:30am again to talk to my boyfriend until I had to leave at 7:25, to make it down for the 7:30am leave for the excavation site as usual. Isabelle and I sit together almost each day, today wasn’t any different. The dig was fun; I got to excavate more around the pithos burial that mine and Isabelle’s trenches share and by the end of the day we covered it all up with a wheel barrel in case of cradle robbers (my prof also mentioned we could have sealed the wholes with plastic wrap and then piled dirt on top). We were all exhausted by the end of the day, and so when we got back, the weather had held up and stayed sunny all day (despite the cold breeze ... read more

Day 25: Ithaki (Ithaka in English) Again I woke up at 6:30am to skype. I talked to my dad and sister at home, then I skyped with my boyfriend till it was time to leave. We all met at the docks on time, for once, and headed to Sami to catch the ferry. It only took about 20 mins to get to the terminal and another 20-30 minute ferry ride from Sami on Kefalonia to Ithaki. On the ferry Isabelle and I shared a raisin strudel with custard inside. It was fresh and warm, the perks of taking the very first 8:30am ferry; fresh pastries!! Our prof went and showed me his favourite, the raisin strudel, so I knew I had to try it at least once! It was delicious and I’d definitely consider getting it ... read more

Day 23 I think the 6:30am wake-ups are going to be a ritual now; I get to wake up and start my day by talking to my boyfriend. We talk while I get ready for the day. I make my lunch at night and just have breakfast with him, while it’s his 8:30pm. I was out the door again by 7:25am and was at the bus on time. It started to rain while we bused to the site, but it cleared up mostly while we unloaded. It sprinkled a bit while we were digging, but it ended by lunch time and got sunny from 11am-1pm. I found some more pithos grave near our neighboor’s pithos, and it looks like theirs leads into ours (they’re afraid that it’s more in ours so we would claim it as ... read more

Day 22 Today was our first dig day in a while, so I got up at 6:30am to talk to my boyfriend since our conversation go cut out yesterday. We talked for a good half hour then I had to start getting ready for the day. I had breakfast and changed with him on the line, and I headed out around 7:25am. I knocked on my neighbor Zack’s door, he’s been having a hard time with the rude rowdy girls in our program so he missed out on all the class time yesterday, so I volunteered to see how he was doing today. When I knocked he answered a little angrily, maybe thinking it was someone there to bother him, but I just said that I wanted to see if he wanted to walk down to ... read more

Day 21 This morning I got up around 8:50am on my own and slowly got ready for the day. After I changed, washed up, grabbed breakfast and packed mine and Isabelle’s lunch, I heard loud bustling around nearby so I figured it was the cleaning lady (she cleans every Monday and Thursday) so I got ready fast and went to Lisa’s room. Unfortunately, she didn’t get to our floor today, so I guess she’ll come back tomorrow and finish up the apartments. Once Isabelle came down, we headed to class; it looked like it had rained earlier this morning but it was clearing up nicely and got pretty hot. At the Hercules building, it was surprisingly ready for us at 10am (very unusual considering our prof goes by Greek time and is always running late and ... read more

Ionian Saturday to Tuesday Sept 25 to 28 Saturday and Sunday: What a rainstorm! We now know what sheet rain can be like. The heavens opened at times incredibly heavy at times less so. About 30 hours of unusual rain. Anyway Kioni is a beautiful spot with wonderful local tavernas, nice buildings and surrounded by higher hills. Friday night early Saturday morning there was lots of wind with the rain and an anchor that wasn’t completely holding. The springer lines and the wind direction held us securely though with enough depth under the boat. On Saturday it was time to teach James and Elizabeth crib, enjoy our books and generally relax and wait for the wind to drop enough so we could reset the anchor for the next night. The time came at about 3:00pm this ... read more
