The holiday started slightly ominously with one of those annoying arguments where you're told off by your wife for something they think you haven't done, you feel innocent of the charge but for whatever reason you can't be bothered arguing about it but go into a 24 hour huff as a precaution. Considering we only had a couple of hours sleep as we had to be up at 2.30am to catch the flight, that, added to the above non-argument, meant we were both knackered and slept most of the first day, the rest of the day was spent largely in a huffy silence. Fortunately the sun, beauty, and charm of the glorious island of Kefalonia melted us into a more average way of relating and soon we were doing all sorts of holiday related activities. One ... read more

Tonight marks a whole week that I've been in Greece. Today it was supposed to be stormy, so we are staying put for now which is fine with me... I don't want to be sea sick! This is the first bad weather, some rain and some fog. Otherwise, it has been in the 70s and 80s I think and very sunny. In fact, I used all my sun screen in two days and I am going to look African sooner than later. The reason that I am here is to participate in a field survey for marine mammals, mainly dolphins and we have not seen any!! However, I am still having a good time. The scenery is strangely similar to Southeastern Alaska because of the high mountains dropping steeply to the sea. However, the main difference ... read more

Thursday 27th November, 2008 continued We lazed around for most of the morning. The sun comes up slightly to the back of the studios and moves round, to shine on our balcony for the rest of the day. It was about 11 o'clock, when the sun was on it enough to sit out, which we did and our clock thermometer said the temperature in the sun was 31°C. It is just truly wonderful to feel the sun on your body, admittedly not hot, but you can feel some heat in it. We slowly got ready to go out and left about twelve thirty. We headed down the road to the left as you leave, that route that we had not been on yet. This is the other side of the long narrow hill that has Argostoli ... read more

Sunday evening continued We bought some internet time and caught up with emails and stuff. The restaurant was open from seven thirty and we went down for our dinner. We had a pasta and mussels and a pasta with tomato sauce to start. Then strips of beef with rocket and parmesan, and a beefsteak with salad. A crème caramel and milk chocolate thing. A very pleasant meal. Monday, 24th November, 2008. Plan for today, ferry from Bari to Patras. Pat went down to breakfast and then we got ourselves together and went down to reception to pay the bill. We left the Hotel shortly after ten o'clock. We retraced our steps of yesterday afternoon and found our way back to the terminal. It was all fairly quiet and the same lady was on, as yesterday. The ... read more

033 - Greece - Kefalonia 10/15/08 - 10/21/08 Ionian Islandry We like Greek islands. And, compared to the hustle of big city life in Athens, we really like Greek islands. It all started as we hopped off the ferry onto Ithaki, Homer's (as in the Iliad and the Odyssey, not the Simpsons!) home in the Ionian Sea. Unlike most ports, however, there was hardly anyone there! No buses, no taxis, nothing. Just me and Hannah, and Yiayia, who wanted to come along to see Ithaki and her friends in Kefalonia during the Saint Gerasimo festival on October 20th. Luckily, there was a friendly old lady selling coffee at a stand that agreed to call a taxi to come pick us up. While waiting, we started off a conversation and I realized how friendly the people of ... read more

Sorry for not having written for so long, we've been busy! We arrived in Kefalonia last week at the charming harbour town of Sami. A real change from the Cyclades as it was very quiet, almost spookily so! After a bit of trouble finding accommodation we found some nice apartments just off the seafront. Sami was a great place to start as close by there was one of Kefalonia's most famous landmarks, the Melissani Cave. Basically this is an underwater lake in a cave whose roof has fallen in. You get rowed across the 100 ft deep lake and it's simply stunning! Really amazing colours on the water and so clear you can see all the way down! We moved to Lassi after a few days, which is where Sam stayed as a kid. To be ... read more

One of my favorite places in the world is the island Kefalonia in Greece. It is on the West side of Greece, three hours by boat away from Patras, half an hour away from Ithaka (swimming...), in the Ionian See. My husband, my daughter and I , we spent an excellent honey-moon in Fiskardo, the most beautiful village on Kefalonia!! We also visited Ithaka! Well it was not the first time (Natali is visiting Kefalonia since 1996), but it was as beautiful as always! ... read more
