Wow we havent written in so long and we've now done so much! As we said on the last entry, we spent some time in Puglia, starting in Vieste. This is a beach type resort on the east coast of Italy, and no one speaks English - at all! So our Italian has improved drastically! We stayed at a really cool hotel called Rocca Sul Mare, which was situated in the oldest building in Vieste. The street it was on was even named after the family who have owned the property for 400 years. It was a really laid back place [View Full Entry]

Corfu & Albania

 Europe » Albania » South » Sarandė
Our trip around Greece has finally come to an end. We managed to get to Corfu with some difficulty, having to go over to the mainland and then a 2hr boat ride from Igounomitsa. We arrived at Corfu town late, and our choice of where we were going to go on the island was pretty much made up for us as there was only one bus after 5pm and that was to Sidari. We did have vague notions of getting jobs here, but to be honest we had some real problems with our accommodation - they thought we wanted to stay [View Full Entry]

Sorry for not having written for so long, we've been busy! We arrived in Kefalonia last week at the charming harbour town of Sami. A real change from the Cyclades as it was very quiet, almost spookily so! After a bit of trouble finding accommodation we found some nice apartments just off the seafront. Sami was a great place to start as close by there was one of Kefalonia's most famous landmarks, the Melissani Cave. Basically this is an underwater lake in a cave whose roof has fallen in. You get rowed across the 100 ft deep lake and it's simply [View Full Entry]

Athens

 Europe » Greece » Attica » Athens
We've been in Athens for about 3 days now and it's been quite a shock from the islands! We're just so unused to being in a busy, bustly, noisy and dirty city after a month cruising around the breezy islands. Athens is quite a lot like what people say it is. An awful lot of it is run down - apparently due to the massive expansion in the 1960s which saw the city go from a population of 250,000 to 4 million. It's very polluted and very dusty - you can actually see the smog hanging in the air! It's got [View Full Entry]

Wow - Mykonos is certainly not what we had expected!!! We arrived 3 days ago, and were greeted at the port by a handful of people asking if we wanted a room - normally there are hundreds! We chose one who informed us that we have arrived on one of the busiest weekends of the year - the Greeks' version of Spring Break. Bearing in mind Mykonos only has a population of 5000 - 30,000 students have descended on this small town for the weekend! Needless to say, it was a bit of a struggle finding somewhere to stay. We managed [View Full Entry]

Paros

Europe » Greece » South Aegean » Paros
We've been in Paros for about 4 days now, but to be honest, we haven't been that impressed! We got over here on an early boat and thankfully found acc easy from a recommendation, then spent the rest of the day on the beach which was fine. But apart from that, there isn't much else to do! We had read that it was a bit of a party island but Llandudno seems busy in comparison to here. It's pretty quiet. We've tried exploring some of the beaches that were supposed to be amazing, but really were not that great - although [View Full Entry]

Naxos

Europe » Greece » South Aegean » Naxos
After a few much nicer days in Ios, we have moved onto Naxos and have been here about 4 days now. It's a really nice island, quite different to Ios as it has much more of a family feel - lots more places to eat but far fewer bars! The weather wasn't so good on the first day so we explored the town which has quite a lot of history linked to it. We visited the castle that dominates the old town of Naxos and was built by the Venitians under their rule from about 13th century onwards. Unfortunately, due to [View Full Entry]

Well we've arrived in Ios 3 days ago. We had the EARLIEST start in Crete, but everything went smoothly and we landed in Ios at about 12.30. We were a bit worried about sorting out accomodation as we hadn't booked anywhere, but we really didn't have a problem! Within about 10 seconds of jumping off the boat, we were surrounded by people showing us their rooms to hire. We got a really good deal with one, paying only E22.50 per night for the both of us. The guy took us up to the Chora (which is the name for Ios town [View Full Entry]

We've finally made it out to Greece! So happy that me and Sam actually managed to see a plan through! We arrived at 5am on Sat morning, with our first 'hiccup' waiting for us. We were meant to be going to Hersonissos in Crete for the first week, but instead we found out that our apartments weren't actually going to be open for another 5 days - in true Greek fashion :-) So instead, we were offloaded onto........Malia. Not exactly the sort of place we envisioned starting our travels. Thankfully, we've been put in the Old Town part which is surprisingly [View Full Entry]
