Photos from the previous blog are now up too! Well I've now arrived in Lubeck, a beautiful city indeed (thanks lonely planet) on a warm and sunny and yes windy day! The wind if anything is getting stronger, and today I had a gentle (?!) 30 miler in the morning to get here. Actually most of the way was a very nice ride following the route of an old railway line through gently undulating countryside (note even gently undulating is tough on a fully loaded tourer) with deer and rabbits frolicking in the grass either side and huge wheat fields everywhere, and almost as huge farmhouses at all the villages on the way. Well it may sound like everything has gone completely smoothly since yesterday, but not quite! Firstly having left Gluckstadt with the ambition to ... read more

Bebenhausen is to Tübingen as Zeeland is to Holland. Close to the same size and not far apart. I went to Bebenhausen this afternoon and saw the castle and the monistary there. The church that is connected to the monistary is the one that my host parents got married in. It was very beautiful, unfortunately I didn't take any pictures in the Schloss (castle) but I was the only person on the tour and it seemed rude to be taking pictures while the nice old guy was talking. I did, however, take pictures from the outside of the buildings and inside the Kloster. Enjoy! Gruße, Bethany... read more

OK, you read all the trauma and drama of the Norwegian “sceneryathon” so this will seem a bit anticlimactic. Our flight to Berlin actually arrived early at Schoenefeld Airport - the former main airport of the DDR (Deutsch Democratik Republic) and now home to a slew of discount airlines. A bus and cab combination got us in front of the building where I had rented an apartment. We were a half hour early for the meeting time, so we waited outside….and we waited….waited past our 1:00 PM meeting…and waited even more. I asked a guy who was sitting on his balcony if he knew where Andreas might be. Long story short….Andreas flew to Chicago for a long weekend and the booking agency was closed until 4 PM. We needed a room and I’ve stayed at the ... read more

Photos now up! Well today is my birthday and what a way to spend it - battling more Siberian winds across northern germany. There have been some ups and downs, including my first breakage on the bike and the first rain of the trip but finally I've made it for a late lunch (which I'll skip as i've had so many mini-snacks on the way) to a place called Gluckstadt, just the other side of the magnificently muddy and uninteresting Elbe. Since Groningen then the trip has taken a downward dip. You only have to look at the faces of the locals to know why. This part of the world is a dull windswept place, lacking any pretty little towns like Holland, but certainly not lacking in rain, at least not on the first day. It ... read more

Well we couldn't help ourselves - we had promised ourselves we would have a quiet few weeks in London given we had been so busy, but the opportunity to visit somewhere new over another long weekend got the better of us. So with three days up our sleeve we ventured off to Berlin to get our first experience of Germany and hopefully take in some sites while learning a bit of history. We flew out after work on Friday, and yes you guessed it, we had delayed flights and instead of getting in at about 10pm, we had to settle for finding our hostel accomodation after midnight. We were pleasantly surprised by the public transport system and swiftly found our place. We were happy that our private ensuited room was seperate from the hostel and in ... read more

Sunday morning, we sang for both Masses at St. Nikolaus, Wolbeck. I played the organ. After the first Mass, I woke everyone up with Acclamations from the Medieval Suite by Jean Langlais (1907-91). Before the second Mass, I played the Adagio from Symphony No. 5 by Charles-Marie Widor (1844-1937). Afterward, I played the Triumphal March on “Nun danket alle Gott” by Sigfrid Karg-Elert (1877-1933). The processional for both Masses was an excerpt from the first movement of Mendelssohn's first sonata. In the evening, we presented a house concert at the home of Martin's parents. It was a lot of fun. We even wore full dress for the occasion. Martin has posted some pictures url=http://www.cyegermany.com/php/index.php?goto=php/bilder&t=images/thumbs/travel/uab_recital/2008_uab_recital_img_&c=travel/menue.inc here. Hello Everyone!! Well I have about a week left and my trip will coming to an end. I got to Berlin all safe and had a little trouble finding my hostel but I got it in the end. The hostel is really nice and clean. Plus the internet is free which is the best part. The internet was expensive in Prague so I wasn't on that much so I can write a little bit more about what I did there. My hostel was called Sir Tobys and it was really nice. The beds were very comfortable and the staff was so helpful. I met so many people from all over the world there. I met a girl from Chile named Macarena. We became really close and laughed so much. I almost stayed in Prague another night ... read more

So as my title suggests, I found out this morning at the Einwohnermeldeamt that apparently we needed visas for stays longer than 3 months and we didn't know it; hence, as of May 1st, we were illegally living in the country. Bryan and I got our visas and everything is now straightened out. We find it weird that Mike never got this letter in the mail, so we are still confused on that. Last week was kind of a blur- Joe's family got here on Tuesday and I've been hanging out with them for a few days.. they are all great! I was only with them for 2 days as I had school on the other days, but on wednesday we walked around the Jungfernstieg area and went to St. Petri Kirche.. which was rough, as ... read more

We are now in a motorhome. We have called it Macre Coeur. It has everything you could possibly think of, a toilet, a shower, a place to cook, a fridge and bunk beds and an even higher bed over the drivers cabin. We picked up our Motorhome in Germany. We have travelled through Germany, Austria and we are now in Italy. We met our friends at a farm stay in Bavaria. We went to a great water park and also had a farmers lunch, which had great cakes and a big hay stack for all the kids to jump in. We are now staying with some other friends in Maranello in Italy. The house is a 400 year old horse stable. Our friends have a lovely dog called Spoon, there is also another dog called Pe ... read more
