I'm a 64 (mentally 34) year old single guy with a horrible addiction to travel. I start planning the next trip before I even leave on the current one!!! I think it really is a sickness!!! I started traveling at 13. I had to slow down a bit while in the military and working, but since I took retirement, I've really taken off. Besides, who wants to stay in south Florida during the hot, humid summer months. Long story short...I've been to the 7 continents and my goal is to join the Century Club...which is for folks who have been to 100 countries. So far, I'm up to 84 countries.

By May the 16th, it finally started getting a bit warmer in Berlin. Not warm enough to wear shorts, but at least to shed a few layers. The Berliners, of course, were packing the outdoor cafes, lounging on grass, strolling and enjoy the sun !!! Normally, on a Sunday, I'd go to the Tiergarten flea market, but really, bargins there are few and far between. I had planned on taking the train to Hamburg for the wonderful Sunday Fish Market, but I just wasn't up to that much travel, so decided to go see Schloss Charlottenburg which was a new city sight for me. The Palace was essentially built in the 1600/1700s by one of the early Wilhelms who named it after his wife. Hard to believe that this was to be a summer palace out ... read more

I felt like hell again today, but determined to go on w/ my program. Had my usual usual healthy apartment breakfast then was out the door by 11:00 AM. Less than 10 minutes away is the the big Winterfeldplatz Saturday street market which is always good for a wander....as long as one remembers that all purchaes need to be packed and carried back to the US of A. It was probably only in the loiw 60s and I was all bundled up as I walked pass the crowded outside cafes. I spoted an empty seat and table right next to an outside heater in front of Cafe Berio.....so I grabbed it. For about $8.00, I had a coffee and a tureen size bowl of cream of asparagus soup with french bread on the side......yummy. The outside ... read more

The stage play, “The Producers” finally opened in Berlin yesterday. In the same theatre in which Hitler watched some stage plays. It is against the law to display the Nazi flag in public, so you’ll find red flags with stylized bratwurt or pretzel artwork in different parts of the city…..the Nazi flag is being shown inside the theatre tho. The song title “Springtime for Hitler” is almost as prominent as the show’s proper name. My British Airways flight from London arrived 10 minutes early, so I got to experience the Berlin cool weather s bit sooner than expected. It is really strange to be in a place where some of the people are walking around in t-shirts and shorts and others are in sweaters and hoodies (like me). If you can find a sunny place out ... read more

The travel plan for this trip called for me to fly from Faro on the 7th of May to Southampton and spend time until the 11th May visiting my friend Stuart and my new friend Jane Alexander and her husband David. The FlyBe flight went very smoothly, tho I wasn’t quite ready for the transition from 80 degree temperature to about 55 degrees in Southampton. The wind and light drizzle weren’t good omens for the next few days, but I held out hope for better weather. By now, my subscribers are familiar with my friend Stuart with whom we visit back and forth. He’s the guy who came thru for me in January 2008 after British Airways lost my luggage just prior to embarking QE2. He needs to bring less clothes when he comes to visit ... read more

Faro, Portugal. Why there? What makes it worth visiting? Why would someone spend 3 hours and 40 minutes on a train to get there? To me, it made sense. The transatlantic sailing finished in Lisbon…..my 3rd time there. Well, it turns out that there were no discount airlines between Lisbon and London…or none that went at a decent time and arrived at a decent time at one of the London airports…..not to mention the fact that I had to get from a London airport down to Southampton cause I wanted to visit with Stuart and some other friends for a few days. Ah….Faro had a slew of discount airlines to the UK and even had one called FlyBE which flew from there direct into Southampton!!! Faro is pretty much in the center of the touristy Algarve ... read more

Wow, I have definitely been derelict in sending out this trips travel blogs seeing as it has been some 12 days into the journey. Lets start with the transatlantic crossing. I picked up my friends the Whitmans at Fort Lauderdale airport on Saturday, the 25th April. After dropping off their luggage at my house, I took them up to the shop for a quick tour after which we met Louis and Elena at the Wine Cellar for a really delightful dinner. After breakfast at Dennys the next morning (the 26th), we closed up the house and took a taxi to Port Everglades Terminal 2 where Bob Bartole got us expedited thru embarkation for the Crown Princess. Wonder of wonders, not only were we moved up a couple decks, but both upgraded to balcony cabins…..great for the ... read more

April 3rd 2009

Greetings everyone...................... It's been just about 5 months since I've had a vacation so you know that I'm chomping at the bit to get away. Thats not quite right because I did take a 2 day cruise to Nassau last month on the next-to-last cruise of the REGAL EMPRESS. That ship began her sea career in 1953 as the OLYMPIA and I do remember seeing her in New York and Boston and it sure seemed big at the time. Now she is on the slow delivery voyage to Indian scrappers. I do hope that someone will purchase and remove her wonderful Tudor styled wooden library rather than use that wood for a home fire. Later this month, I'm booked for my spring transatlantic crossing aboard Princess Cruises' CROWN PRINCESS ... a repeat of last spring's crossing. ... read more

December 22nd 2008

To all my friends……………. First, I want to wish all my friends the merriest of Christmases and the happiest of New Years. I really hope that 2009 will bring all of you the best of health, wealth and happiness. This may seem early for some folks, but in my mind, November 9th of 2009 calls for some early planning. Why? Because that date is the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall. How many of us were glued to the television on that eventful day? I thought I might not be the only one who’d like to be in Berlin to take part in the citywide celebrations that will take place. At the same time, I’d also like to be on the NAVIGATOR OF THE SEAS again to sail back home. Here’s what I ... read more

I was thinking that perhaps my loyal readers might wonder what has been happening now that we are somewhere in mid-Atlantic between the Azores and North America. Well, we are rolling along quite nicely…..in spite of the fact that the forward stabilizers aren’t working. Fortunately, the ship “had” 2 sets of stabilizers and overall, the seas haven’t been that rough. The weather itself, tho, hasn’t been that great as it continues with lots of wind and temperatures that remain in the high 60s. The Europeans on board, however, find the temperature balmy, so they are the ones in the deck chairs (sometimes bundled up like mid-winter) and hot tubs. By about 10:30 AM, the jogging track is filled with people out for their morning walk….(3 times around the track is a mile)….so many that real joggers ... read more

November 13th 2008

Monday, the 10th of November was ship embarking day, but hell….we didn’t have to be there until around 2 PM so Dick and I decided we had one more important bit of sightseeing to do before the cab to the pier……we had to visit the still uncompleted Sagrada Familia church designed by the architect Gaudi (yup, the guy who gave the word to the world). As we were checking out and leaving our luggage in the hotel’s storage room, I head “hey there!” and there stood Nannette and her friend Barbara who had arrived the day before. Three times I had asked if they had checked in and each time was told either they hadn’t or for that matter, even held a reservation! That mystery solved, turns out only Barbara had been able to make the ... read more
