Colonge and the Rhine River ValleyJulie J Vanover I came to Cologne because I wanted to see the Rhine River Valley and Cologne was the coolest city- by far- around the area. I didn't do alot of sightseeing in Cologne because I always was getting in really late. I did see the Cathedral there which is massive, you step out of the train station and the Cathedral is literally right there. It is so big that your neck gets tired looking at it. Just walking around it was a workout. Unfortunately this was really all that I saw of Cologne, this city is on my list of cities to see more of. There isn't a whole lot to say about my cruise down the Rhine, I started in Koblenz and ended in Bingen see the "best ... read more

So you find us in Germany, redecorating flats, packing up, moving out, getting lots of injections, buying kit, going out a lot and attempting to do our jobs for the last few weeks before we leave. It's all been a bit hectic! Occasionally in between we have time to plan our Africa trip and read some guidebooks. Getting quite excited about it now. We will both finish work at the end of June, then take a few days to drive our stuff back to the UK and clutter up our parents' lofts! Hopefully a chance to catch up with everyone and then we're off! Flight is booked for July 13th (yes Friday 13th no less) Heathrow to Dubai. Couple of days stopover and then on to Nairobi. Africa here we come! Since we'll be (hopefully) travelling ... read more

Summer camp ended today. That’s staying at the Mountain Hostel felt like. It’s a small place and with no city to explore at night, its very easy to get to know everyone staying there. Richard and I decided to catch the 12:25 train from Interlaken to Basel and then finally from there to Cologne. Fortunately, the Mountain Hostel Gang (Chris, Rebecca, Allison, Tim, and the Aussie girls) needed to head out of town to their various next destinations around the same time so we all floated off the cliff from Gimmelwald at the same time. We had an hour or so to kill in Interlaken so we all hung out at a café. Richard and I were the first to split from the gang to catch our train. Traded e-mails with them and then waved them ... read more

Hi all We arrived in Cologne about half an hour ago after coming from Berlin. Had a great couple of days in Berlin with Ray my brother in law and nephew, Glenn. It ws some soccer final there so it was party time - for us as well!! We tried to jump the underground, but the line we needed took fans to the game and they were packed like sardines on the train, every time the doors opened you could hear the chanting, fun times!! Had lunch near the Brandenburg Gate with a live band playing, was a great time!! Then walked for ages seeing the Reichstag building, Kaiser wilhelm church which was bombed during the war and remains as a monument, also saw the remains of the Wall - I love Berlin its such a ... read more

The last was berlin right? well since then been hanging out a lot and getting out a little. Maria and I decided to nix the Amsterdam thing, since there was NO where to stay and we like sleep, so we went to Munich with Isaac (from the castle) and Bobcat instead. Ria really wanted to go, and I loved munich, so we were off. Took the train, well almost missed the train thanks to dudes sleeping in and losing wallets. but made it barley, played some sweet card games on the early train and waltzed into munich! Just as great as I remember. I love that city, wish i could spend weeks there. They happened to have a Spring Fest that weekend, so we went back to the good ole Oktoberfest grounds and walked around. ... read more

„Viva Colongia“ On Tuesday, May 1st my Lynnie just so happened to be traveling down the Rhine River from Amsterdam to Basel and landed in Cologne, Germany. Because it is only a 2 hour ride from Bielefeld Siggi and I decided to hope on a train and visit her for the day to do a bit of sightseeing… We had absolutely beautiful weather and a fabulous time! We met Lynne at the famous Kölner Dom. A bit of Wikipedia info: The Cologne Cathedral (German: Kölner Dom, official name: Hohe Domkirche St. Peter und Maria) is one of the best-known architectural monuments in Germany and has been Cologne's most famous landmark since its completion in the late 19th century. The cathedral is under the administration of the Roman Catholic Church and is the seat of the ... read more

We hit the jackpot when booking our hotel on the net to stay in Cologne. It’s often very difficult to imagine if the accommodation you are booking is exactly what you want - but our room is literally right beside the Dom Cathedral - right in the centre of the city. My balcony overlooks the court yarn to the cathedral and gives us an appreciation of the magnificent carvings and decorative structures that cover this huge church. Today was spent discovering Cologne. We first did a short cruise down the Rhine and then spent the rest of the day walking around shopping and eating. The weather has been so great it makes it pleasant just to wander from one sight to the next. If you understand the Hinkleys holidays then you would already know they ... read more
