Cologne On a recommendation of a friend that lived in Germany (thanks Baker), we decided to stay in Cologne between games. As soon as you walk out of the Hauptbahnhof, or main train station, you run smack into the magnificent Dom, the oldest Gothic cathedral in Germany. Just walking around the Altstadt, or old town, which is filled with restaurants, bars and beer halls, confirmed that Cologne was the right choice. In general, I have to say the Germany has been a great host for the World Cup. One of the things that they have done extremely well is to create FanFests, or large public viewing areas, in each of the cities that hosted Cup matches. This set up is great for fans who were not able to get tickets but want to watch with a ... read more

Chalk one up for the home team. Using my non-fluent silence and Ecuador shirt to convince security I was lost and my family was already inside (I have a great puppy-face, ask my ex´s), Inky gets us into an already-jam-packed Fan Fest viewing area for the Germany-Costa Rica opening match as it was starting. Moments earlier, I had somehow managed to keep up with her on a borrowed bicycle, despite the height of the seat being more suited for Dirk Nowitzki than yours truly. Not exactly how I imagined the beginning of the World Cup going down, but we´re here. I learn a couple of German chants (on two occasions, Inky tells me to disregard what the friendly drunks are trying to teach me) and Deutschland prevails 4-2. The fans are surprisingly friendly despite my enemy ... read more

A couple of weeks ago as I read through an ESPN article handicapping the World Cup, it occured to me that a tournament of this magnitude (a true GLOBAL tournament) can only be analyzed in one way: THE WOMEN. That´s right, I SAID it. Having "gotten around" a bit this past year, I feel I am quite up to speed on recent "developments" in most World Cup countries, so allow me to make you some money (well, that is if you decide to join Sportsbook.com through my site) and predict the WHOLE Cup, from beginning to end, based on each COUNTRY´S "cups". ALL puns are intended, see if you can catch them all. Group A: GERMANY, COSTA RICA, ECUADOR, POLAND Commentary: Tough to deny the host nation (as I learned shortly after arriving at Inky´s flat), ... read more

It took a while, but I think I´m finally "balls-deep" in the World Cup (no pun intended). Touching down in Cologne this past Wednesday, I was working on my 53rd failed attempt to call my host and friend, nowhere to be found for the always-elusive airport pickup. When you dial a wrong number or get an automated voicemail in Germany, the German message is basically the same, at least to my Deutsche-challenged arce, so I couldn´t tell if I was dialing the area code incorrectly or if they wanted me to deposit 2 more Euros for the first 5 minutes of my phone sex call. But right when I was about to hit the road with a "Will Blog for Bed" sign, the travel gods apparently sent their own, as I caught a glimpse of a ... read more

Dear family and friends The offer of a trip to Germany - all expenses on work - was too good to pass up, so I signed on for the work soccer team and spent the last weekend in April hiding behind my goalie gloves in Cologne. Together with a really lovely team of girls from the London, Brussels and Paris offices (pictured), we played against a seriously scary team from Moscow, as well as teams from Bratislava (not a country in itself but actually the capital of Slovakia I discovered....the hard way), Budapest, Madrid and Germany. Whilst we may not be getting any calls to play in the World Cup, we were pretty pleased to come 4th out of 9, especially as we had 4 Aussies in the team who didn't know the rules and I ... read more

today's routine...eating, railway booking, playing in department store..... 2148 Hostel ... read more
