I just spent 2 days in Cologne. It is another fabulous German city. It’s most famous as being the home of the Cologne Cathedral (a UNESCO world heritage site). After having visited I can appreciate why. Construction on the gothic style cathedral began in 1248 and was completed in 1880. It didn’t actually take 632 years to build; the construction took place in stages. Inside the cathedral you’ll find the shrine containing relics of the 3 Magi. This is why the Cologne Cathedral has been a pilgrimage church. If you ever visit I highly recommend the guided tour. Another thing you can do at the cathedral is climb the 509 steps to the observation platform within one of the cathedrals towers. Yes, I said 509. It’s a long way up a spiraling staircase. I’m not afraid ... read more

Date: 07.02.2005 Destination: Cologne, Germany Day: 1 Rosenmontag was celebrated this time of the year and with big Carnival. We went to one of the biggest in Germany, in Cologne. Basically the whole city was closed down for parades and parties. We went there from Duisburg and supposedly the journey will take just one hour but because the train was so packed, we reached there late. The most interesting part was that people were in festive mood all around, drinking, eating, wearing funny custome and weird-looking hats. The moment we reached Cologne main bus station, the Carnival started. It was hard even to move around. People laughing, screaming.... We walked to the Cologne Cathedral just outside of the main station. This is really one of the crepiest great cathedral in the world, the dark structure and ... read more

We spent the day driving along the Rhine River, touring castles, and visiting Cologne. At one of the castles we went in an underground maze(see pic of Josh). For a girl that is kind of claustrophobic the tight squeezes were a little scary. Plus I was not informed that we could be crawling around in a tunnel, so I wore a skirt. Oh well, it was a blast. Cologne was beautiful and so was the cathedral. ... read more

The Ruhr Area is huge. Cities merge together, to the extent it is impossible to determine which one you're in at the moment. This massive zone attracts lots of people. People in cars. Even though the German Autobahn is an impressive network of roads, traffic jams are inevitable. This is one of those places, where lots of people decided to take their cars out for a ride, all at the same time, resulting in a complete standstill. An indicator on the dashboard is going into red. Smoke is coming out of the engine. A broken radiator and a traffic jam - bad combination. Pulling on to the shoulder and let the car cool down is only a temporary solution. We have to take the first exit to the first town. The town where nobody speaks English. ... read more
