Dom@2004 How's the feeling of being regarded as Japanese? Maybe you think that's so common and not worth talking, but let me tell you, although I'm not against the Japanese, it's really really awful, when the whole world thought you MUST be a Japanese, just because Germany is having a warm-up match against Japan in the region! Manman & I fortunately got the tickets in the fan shop of Bayer Leverkusen in BayArena (I could walk again on the path that I walked in 2004, the memory was so good), thanks to the final sale session held by the host stadium. When we went back from Leverkusen Mitte to Köln, th... read more

we actually went to cologne on saturday......but i've been working on our presentation and paper for class so im getting around to posting this now......had a great time......cologne is a really cool city, esp the cathedral......it's really interesting to note that while almost everything in the major german cities was destroyed during the war and subsequently rebuilt, this cathedral was somehow left more or less intact, so it's the real deal......it was overcast the entire day again, but at least were were inside for 95% of the rain......unlike luxembourg......next it looks like we're heading to munich after our final on friday...... - joe... read more

the flight was disgusting, an hour delayed, lots of meals, repeated turning on and off of the lights. i've slept for only about 4 hours during this 18-hour journey. this time was the german police officer to ask me the purpose of going to germany, and he asked me to show of my euro prepared. i know what did he mean. so i directly showed my credit card. ALLES GUTE! as shown in weather forecast, Düsseldorf is rainy and cold. my eurail pass is yet activated and i had to calculate if there were any cheaper way to buy some discounted ticket. i knew nothing and my brain refused to calculate. manman helped me a lot, maybe i owed her a loft of bread! the atmosphere in köln is strange. no huge poster, no special decoration. ... read more

Because I had no plans for the upcoming long weekend, I consulted my wonderful excel sheet of travel aims and it had a Köln entry primary because I had been told there was chocolate factory that featured a chocolate fountain. This all sounded very ‘Willy Wonka’ to me so I gathered a few interested people for a day trip: Pauli & Andy from Airbus and Daniel who lived across the road from my old place. (btw. these words with umlauts in them are completely evil to pronounce, so every 2nd City used in the Learn German Text is Köln) Because we wanted to make the most of the day whilst still making sure that we do so on a budged (10€ each), Daniel, Paulina and me caught the 6:19 train from Bremen. However this very early ... read more

So we got to Koln (Cologne as the english people call it) on Friday. We were picked up at our train platform by a wonderful, beautiful, smiling Anke and her boyfriend Christian (very nice boy, we like this one definatley). They drove us to Anke's house to see her roommates and chill out for a bit. Then they took us to meet some friends and go dancing at the "live music hall", this place was crazy! And they had all you can drink beer from 9-11! Very fun time, great music, and I give props to the Germans for their manners within clubs.... seriously, there was no pushing, no grabbing, no tweeking of any body parts from an unknown source, honestly it was very enjoyable. That night Anke gave up her bed (no she wasnt on ... read more

Yesterday I finally broke down and purchased the 'junior ticket' for the public transport system here. It was only 12.80 Euros for a month, but because of a formular error and my laziness, I didn't get around to buying it until yesterday, 11 days before the end of the month. And no, it was not pro-rated. :( With it, I rode into Köln to see the Cathedral, aka Dom. Two weeks ago when I got a quick glimpse of it from the train station was the first time I had seen it in 14 years. And it's special b/c it's the first cathedral I had ever ever seen. Weee! When I exited the Koeln Hbf the weather was pretty foul. Windy and drizzle-y. I didn't have a jacket (uh, it's already on a freighter on it's ... read more

We woke up to pouring rain this morning. Dark and gloomy, it was freezing outside! I am so thankful I brought my thick waterproof jacket. To think I wasn’t going to bring it! It’s all I’ve been wearing since arriving in Europe! Our buffet breakfast was at 7.30am…eek! Most of you will know that is VERY early for me! At breakfast we sat with Tammy and Con from Perth, Australia. They have 2 twin girls who are 5 years old. After the tour they’re going to London then Greece for 3 weeks to meet up with family and their 2 daughters. With breakfast over (also smuggling some crackers in my bag), we get in the bus and head to the city. We board an undercover glass boat and cruise the canals of Amsterdam. It is still ... read more

I'm in Germanz now, for less than a daz, and I am totallz shellshocked and traumatiyed bz the prices. If I thought I was going broke before when I was in Poland, I surelz will be broke when I leave Germanz! For example, the train ride in from the airport to the Cologne main trainstation was 2.20 Euros. That's like 10 polish zlotys. Zea, this is what I am doing, converting to Polish zloty instead of USD, and then I think, for 10 zls, I can have bought a whole piyya! Or rode the bus 5 times! (btw, the y and the z kezs are switched on the Germanz kezboard lazout, so just bear with me. If something looks reallz misspelled, it's cuy I'm too layz to retzpe) I was so thirstz at the trainstation (and ... read more

We arrived in Cologne early afternoon and after checking into our hostel, had a walk around the town - the best way to see a place. We had never planned to stop in Cologne but unfortunately the cost of the German train service and the non-existence of a national bus service meant that we wanted to check out all our options before paying the €90 train fare to Berlin. In the end, we managed to find the Mitfahrzentrale. This is a kind of organised hitchiking service where the bureau sets up passengers with registered drivers who are making the journey anyway. We booked in for tomorrow evening and went back to the hostel for our supper of chamions - Pot Noodle! In the evening we went together with an Italian guy from our dorm, Filippo to ... read more
