BERLIN-GERMANY 1/10/06 30/9/06 Last day on Rica today. : ( A few feeling a bit worse for wear from the night before, the sunnies were out in force. So with no one to talk to up the back… I made the most of it, up the front of the bus, enjoying the view. The drive to the German border was very pretty through little towns and forested areas. Once a few more of the girls woke up, and after a delay from some road works, we decided to see how many European truckies we could make crack a smile in the queue of traffic that we passed on the other side of the road. So imagine if you will, a bunch of girls sitting up the front of a tourist bus, grinning like idiots, waving madly ... read more

After a pretty subdued night, I got up in the morning and grabbed some food at the supermarket before beginning a long day of walking. Adjacent to where I was staying is Berlin's large city park (Tiergarten) which I walked through to Brandenburg gate on the far side. I was hoping to follow the course of the Berlin wall, so I was happy to see that it's path was marked by two stone cobbles in the street. I followed it past the haunting memorial to the murdered Jews, and then on to Potsdamerplatz, where there is a short section still standing. It's really hard to imagine how different things would have been in places like Potsdamerplatz with the wall running through the middle of it. Today its a bustling square with high rise buildings and shops. ... read more

My flight from Dublin to Berlin on Ryan Air was due to leave at 5:55AM on 9/26. It's not possible to get to the airport early enough, using public transportation, to check in for a 6am flight. So, I made the decision to sleep at the airport thursday night. I expected to be one of only a couple people sleeping there, and I was actually a bit concerned that I would not be allowed to do it, since I've never done this before. However, when I arrived I found that the only waiting area outside of security was absolutely packed with people. This is at 10:30 at night no less. Hoping that things would clear up after the last few flights came in, I took a seat. Sure enough, after about 1.5 hours of waiting, most ... read more

Berlin is one of the cities I really enjoyed ^^ There is no more difference between the two sides. You can just feel it when you look at the buildings and the structure of the streets and places. What I loved of berlin is the potzdam platz at night with the sony center. I enjoyed as well the food! I ate lots of sausages and meat roasted just in the street. Museums were interesting and there was a huge park too. When we arrived , it was sunny, but it became sadly rainy. Berlin is really cheap city, so we ate for nice prices, and we bought many things. The night is also exciting. There are lots of nice discos. ... read more

Haven't managed to update in a few days, but we had a bit more of a go at Oktoberfest (how unpredictable). We were planning on doing a tour or two around Munich and Dachau but we decided to hit Oktoberfest early to avoid crowds and get a seat. This turned into us missing the tours because of drinking. Didn't mind too much since that's what I was there for. We caught an overnight train to Berlin and decided that we all wanted to do tours this time, to make sure we got to see the city. We did a walking tour of the city taking in sights such as the Berlin wall, various churches/synagogues, gestapo headquarter ruins, checkpoint charlie, the site of the "burning of the books" and loads more. By the way, the train station ... read more

So eventually we arrived in Berlin on Friday morning at 8:20am. Our station was the Zoological Station in Berlin as opposed to the Berlin Hauptbahnhof. Upon arriving we immediately found a place to store our luggage. We had two options for storing our belongings… one was the lockers at the station, for 48 hours we could have payed 5 euro, or we could have them checked in at the luggage holding window for 2.50 euro a day. Opting for the cheaper alternative, we handed over our bags and checked with the guy behind the desk the opening times of the office. We asked him if it was open 24 hours and he said “yes, 24 hours!” So with our bags all secure we left the train station and orientated ourselves outside with where we were. Our ... read more

Okay....so it's been a few days since the last update. We've been to places with no internet access in Germany and in Switzerland internet was 5 swiss francs for 15 minutes and since we only had 12 francs left for supper...no updates. It turns out that Switzerland is very expensive. 12 francs gets you 2 small cheeseburgers and 6 nuggets at a Mcdonalds in Bern...and just about nothing anywhere else. So on September 12th we took the trains from Rothenberg to Hohenschwangau which is the land of King Ludwig and his fairy tale castles. We toured both the castles there and stayed in a place with a view of the castle from the balcony. This town was super touristy during the day when swarms of buses pull in but everything shuts down around 6:00. The town ... read more

Day 1 After spending the last week in transition at an apartment in Willesden Green, Mum and I were off to Berlin for the start of our trip through Europe, whilst Liani was off to South Africa to visit her family. We headed off from Stanstead Airport flying Air Berlin which turned out to be one of the most comfortable flights I have had in Europe. At Berlin we caught the bus into town and found our hostel, East Seven not far from all the main sights. After finding some supplies we had a nice dinner not far from our hostel, sitting outside by candlelight. Day 2 We decided not to do an organised tour of the city; instead on the advice of the hostel staff, we planned a full day of sightseeing. First we visited ... read more

Sept. 12 I SURVIVED AMSTERDAM!!!! We spent three hours in a bus station waiting for our bus to arrive and then had an 11 hour bus ride. We are now in Berlin. We haven't done much yet but so far it looks very much like Toronto or Calgary. It is very Americanized. Sept. 13 I have decided Berlin is a very cool and educational city. We went on a walking tour. We started at the Brandenburg Gate which was the entrance exit to east west Germany. We also saw the following: - The memorial for the Jewish people killed in WWII, made by Peter Eisenman. It was different size blocks that spread about the size of a football field and the ground was lowered in many places - Hitler's bunker where he committed suicide although the ... read more

After arriving in Berlin in what was ostensibly the longest day of my life, I left the hotel to experience German beer. As it turns out and as was expected the brew was both expensive and refreshing. Some friends and I started a conversation with a man from Copenhagen who after speaking with for some time deemed that I be called "the jokester." The following morning, September 12, I went on a bus tour of the city. A notable sight during the tour was Peter Eisenman's Holocaust Memorial. This memorial consisted of hundreds of granite blocks arranged in such a way that it appears to be a wheat field on a windy day. Although this affect was not achieved when I experienced the monument, other people claim to see the creator's intent. The afternoon was spent ... read more
