One of the most important cities over the past 100 years .. the modern history! Berlin is a really amazing city for so many reasons. Arriving into Germany, I had to make a change of trains at Hamburg, so after seeing purely the inside of the station at Hamburg we were off on a fast train to Berlin. Unfortunately I was going to catch up with Kristin from my Scotland tour but we messed up the dates and she was on the North Sea for the week. After stumbling around trying to find directions to a hostel, I made my way to the Schoneberg area and to Meininger City Hostel. I wandered around this area of town before taking it easy back at the hostel. The next day it was really sunny and actually a bit ... read more

I had been looking forward to Berlin as many people had said it was a top city. Plus I was going to catch up with a good mate Pietro (aka Fuey) who was travelling in from Dusseldorf (where he lives) and whom I hadnĀ“t seen for a couple of years. Berlin is built on a boggy swamp, so can be a bit whiffy at times. But it just adds more character to a city that is already very individual and diverse. Took a free walking tour (they work on tips alone) which was really worthwhile for orientation purposes. During my stay got to see the usual sights (Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag, Berlin Wall), plus went to some museums (Holocaust Memorial, Pergamon, Stasi Museum, Checkpoint Charlie museum) and a local jazz club (Schlott), and also checked out some ... read more

So i am not sure where i left off last time i wrote but i will just say Berlin is AWSOME!!!!! We have been having a blast, so far we have seen all the things that i mentioned before but also we went to the big part of the berlin wall that is still standing that was neat because right beneath it was the excavation of the old Gestapo headquarters and although it was all in german there were some really amazing pictures, also right behind there was a wall that told the story of the berlin war crime trials and how the four major powers indicted 24 or 26 leaders of the nazi party and sentenced all of them to death. It was really interesting to read all the quotes that the german leaders said ... read more

So today was our first day out in Berlin and i can already tell that i love it. The people here are HUUUUUGEEEE i seriously feel like a midget compared to all these germans, i now know why Hitler thought they were some amazing race, they are all over 6 feet tall and are some strong looking people, i walked by a police officer today and the he(this might sound bad but..) was the exact image of what i picture when i think of a Nazi soldier, blond hair, blue eyes, and a mean looking guy. but anways, This city seems to have more interesting history than all the places we have been combined. It was where both world wars were thought up and where the big conflict with the spead of communism was. We saw ... read more

Well, actually I hurt it jumping a fence that happened to be in Berlin, but whatever. Overview 1. Thanks for all your comments...we really look forward to them everytime we go into an internet cafe. Harlan gets the most points this time because his comment was hilarious. 2. Americans butcher languages. My favorite to butcher so far has been German, becuase its just so easy to screw up, so I was glad to be back in Germany. However, me screwing up German in Berlin is not a new past-time. It is well known that JFK visited Berlin at the peak of the Cold War and made a famous speech ending with "Ich bin ein Berliner". What is not very well known is that it translates into "I am a jelly doughnut". Look it up if you ... read more

After the night of the long pasta wait it was vegemite and cheese sandwiches for breakfast, what a great way to start the day, thanks again for the kilo jar Tash. Anyway, things have been cracking along on the trip. I caught up with Nina in Berlin, I can't remember if I said that already, all the booze and continuous flights are starting to get to my memory. So while we were there we went on the free New Berlin tour where we walked around for three and a half hours checking out all the sites and learning a little history behind them all too which is always good. If anyone goes to Berlin definitely go on the tour cos it's awesome and kind of free, you give the guide a tip at the end as ... read more

So now I'm in Berlin after the five hour train ride of boredom and it's the day after my dinner with some students from Switzerland who are on a uni trip. It was good to wake up sober but I still can't work out what day it is today and I do have laundry to do. So stolling down stairs for breakfast I got a big surprise, Bruce from Oktoberfest was staying at the same hostel as me which meant we had to catch up for beers! That would be later as it was still morning, though it's never stopped me before ;-) That day I just strolled around the main strip on Oranienburger an checked out this cool place which by day is kind of a gallery of grungy art and by night turns into ... read more
