I said goodbye to the regulars at the Tent and headed into the city before getting stuck in the WORST queue ever at the train station (i seem to have a knack for finding the slowest ones!) and almost missing the train i was planning on catching to Berlin. i got stuck with a smoking cabin seat (yuck!) but it was a pretty uneventful journey. it was still really cool just to listen to music and watch the scenery go by because it is all so new. One funny thing i noticed was these bach complexes (if you could call them that) that would be about as big a a single bedroom but with about two single bedrooms worth of fenced garden space. But what amazing gardens! i met a german girl on the train who ... read more

A late but worthy entry nonetheless. I didnt haul my discs halfway across the globe not to use them so i was determined to get a round in somewhere. I foolishly didnt think about it in Munich but made sure i got my A into G in Berlin. It was an early 8am Sunday morning round at the beautiful Falkspark Rehburg in Wedding, North Berlin, it was lightly raining which as always made for testing conditions. The park is huge and my friendly discgolf local Stephen Defty (ex USA) informed me that they have about 8 regularly played and marked courses throughout the park but with only 2 permanent baskets. There were a few travelling Americans also playing that morning so made for two groups of 5, my group consisted of the local grand master Steve, ... read more

hi folk. quick updates: it turns out that i'm going home a little earlier than i had originally planned, for various reasons, but essentially it boils down to the fact that 8 weeks away from home in a foreign country is long enough for me. so, i'm going home on wednesday, august 23rd, exactly two weeks from today, and i'm glad. in the meantime, though, i'm going to pack in as much as i can before i leave. tomorrow i'm going to Bonn to visit my (german) friend Tom, who was a grad student in the history department at UW for one year, and is now finishing up his degree at the university in Bonn. it should be fun, and i'm looking forward to speaking some german with actual germans, though i have a feeling that ... read more

hello to you all!! i am sitting here in a youth hostel in west berlin pissed as a fart so apologies for any typos! what to type!! so much has happened, most i cant remember, destroyed so many brain cells. We left hamburg today, and im sorry to say it but i was very sad!!! i really love it there! We didnt end up getting tattoos yet coz they were so expensive here!! double the normal price! so we will either get them in poland, or when we go to scotland which is the new thing on the agenda. we spent the morning yesterday wandering the streets of Reepersbahn, the asshole of Hamburg, with some scottish friends from wacken. Basically its the seedy red light district, but it was great fun!!! im spewing i didnt see ... read more

Sorry......just amusing myself there. lacking any sort of creative vibe I was set to resort to the standard 'Ich bin ein Berliner' as the title for this entry. However, being the shocking speller that I am (yes Mel, I know.....even with English) I was just doing a quick google check of my spelling (which miraculously I had correct) when I came across a few articles debating whether Kennedy had declared that he was a jelly doughnut, or if (as intended) he had told all that he was 'at one' with the people of Berlin. As it turns out, the same phrase can be used for both - as a Berliner is (or at least was) a popular doughnut in Germany. While I like the idea of the president declaring himself to be a doughnut......of course that ... read more

My mother is here visiting me, and we're having a great time so far. Berlin has greeted her arrival by a sudden change of weather, with highs in the mid-70s and short, but intense rain squalls at regular intervals the past couple of days. While it is perhaps slightly too cool, this afternoon has been beautiful, and we went for a walk around the Scheuninviertel, which is the formerly Jewish neighborhood in which my school is located. I'm posting a picture of small plaques that you see often in the streets in this neighborhood that note the homes of people who were deported, listing their names, and when and where they were deported to and murdered. They are a sobering part of everyday life in the neighborhood, although I think most people who have been here ... read more

Lübeck - Hamburg - Berlin (Train) 3 August Berlin currently has the newest and most modern hauptbahnhof (main train station) in the world. Finished in time for the world cup crowd, it is built behind the equally impressive Reichstag (the German parliament) in the once vacant land that was the divide between East and West. We loved Berlin when we were here in 2001. There was much construction being undertaken 5 years ago and progress was evident. Although the German’s are also very considered in their planning and will deliberate a long time on all aspects of any project to ensure it is the best use of the space. The former “death strips” between the walls, which separated East and West Berlin, has given a united Berlin something unique to any modern city: a large area ... read more

What can I say about Berlin? Well, let me tell you this: Berlin is the coolest city ever, and I don't think I can talk to you if you haven't been there. I can't really explain why, I just feel like a better person than you after seeing Der Stadt. So please go to Berlin or stop reading right now. We were really really fortunate to be able to stay at my friend Francisco Blache (I probably spelled his name wrong) house in the suburb near Grunau station for four full nights. The first night, we just went for a nice night swim in the nearby lake, but the next day we were off. Francisco explained to us that Berlin is the biggest construction site in the world. True enough, the closest thing Berlin has to ... read more

Greetings all, I'm not really sure how I want to go about doing this travel journal yet, in fact the only reason I'm starting right now is because I inadvertently bought 120 minutes worth of internet time at this piece of shit internet cafe at the hostel I'm staying at in Frankfurt. The reason I did so was to charge my mp3 player, little did I know the damn computers are boarded up. So I'm unable to upload more pictures. Anyhow, this is neither here nor there. On Tuesday afternoon, I flew in to Berlin Schoenefeld airport from London. Upon arriving there, I spent about 20 minutes waiting at the wrong baggage pickup area. I then spent the next 2 to 3 hours wandering around the airport train station pondering which train to catch into central ... read more
