I assumed that the coolest thing about my trip would be meeting Dr. Helmut Kohl tomorrow evening, and listening to him speak about the reunification of Germany, with the Brandenburg Gate in the background. And yes, that will be pretty cool. But today, we also had something cool happen... Yesterday, I found out that Hosni Mubarak, the president of Egypt is staying at our hotel. Usually, there is someone cool at the hotel (Heidi Klum & Seal, U2), but I NEVER get to see them! So I was impressed by the increased security (more on them later), but didn't take it too seriously. I forgot that I had to sit in the lobby today for six hours, manning (or womanning) the "hospitality desk" for our conference. As a result, I actually got to see President Mubarak ... read more

I did manage to write a couple of posts about my Berlin trip in May 2006 - Enjoy! This morning, it occurred to me that I should be blogging about my travels! As I walked back from Potsdamer Platz here in Berlin, and saw five pieces of what used to be the Berlin Wall, I realized two things: a) how lucky I am, and b) that I should be recording this for posterity! So here goes, and this will be short because of my terminal jet lag... We arrived yesterday in Berlin for my company's Annual Meeting - sounds fancy (and it is), but I'm partly responsible for the planning, so this is more work than pleasure! After getting no sleep on the seven hour flight over, I was ready for a nap. We are staying ... read more

Our time in Germany has been incredibly moving. There have been moments where I've felt as though we have stepped through a portal back to the terrible wars of the 20th century, discovering for ourselves the horror of their aftermath. But perhaps even more disturbing, are the moments when we've seen little echoes of the past that seem to be repeating.... very very sad. The exploration we began through our visit to Dachau concentration camp has been continued throughout the past week we've spent in Germany's cities. We firstly visited Nuremberg, home to the famous Courtroom 600 where the trials of the WWII war criminals took place in 1945-46. It was during our visit to the famous courtroom itself that we learned of the reasons why Nuremberg was chosen to host this important event. I ... read more

Having lived in Amsterdam in 1989 when the Berlin Wall came down but unable to afford a visit, I finally managed a visit in March 2007. Although I've been to southern Germany a couple of times, I was very unsure of what to expect of Berlin. Verdict - a thoroughly enjoyable week! Stayed at the Marriott hotel, courtesy of points accumulated almost 10 years ago; but only stayed there to sleep. When travelling, I prefer to eat as a local - so - breakfast was taken at various stalls near Alexander Platz, lunch in local cafés and evening meals in or around Oranienburger Strasse. Weather was clear and crisp and the days spent following tours given by the New Berlin Tours. These were very refreshing, with very knowledgeable guides giving an insight into the chosen tour ... read more

It's my last night in Berlin. Nicholas and I just got back from the concert and he's passed out on the bed. We have to be out of the house by 6 am tomorrow morning. Yuck. But I think it's better that way; I hate day-long goodbyes. It's better to just get up and leave. But the problem is that I really don't want to leave. I do want to see my friends, but I don't want to be back in Besancon or without Nicholas. I'm lucky that I get to see Nicholas every month, but in some ways it's harder. Thinking of going back to the monotony of school and everything makes me really bummed. But soon enough I'll be in Paris with my parents and Nicholas! I am so excited for them to come...only ... read more

I'm sitting here drinking the wine Nicholas' host mom brought home while Nicholas practices his Beethoven . I feel very content; like I could do this every night. But then again, maybe it's just the wine making me feel this way. I really like it in Berlin. In all honesty, I feel more at home here than I do in Besancon, but I'm still looking forward to going back and seeing all my friends. I guess Germany just feels more like the states and that could be why I feel more comfortable here. Or maybe I like it so much because I haven't had to go to school... Tonight Nicholas and I are going to Pan's Labyrinth, which is supposed to be a really good film. All ripe tomatos according to "RottenTomatos.com", which is really quite ... read more

I'm sitting here in bed typing while Nicholas sleeps next to me. It's 6:15 pm, and I really should be doing my homework, but instead I've opted to waste time. I guess Nicholas made the same choice, too; I could've sworn 45 minutes ago he was talking about practicing... Today was a beautiful day in Berlin - sunshine and 50 degrees. I had a pretty relaxing day, but I did go out and about for a while to eat some sushi. The food here is one of the main reasons I'm so jealous of Nicholas. There are hardly any ethnic restaurants in Besancon. If you want a sandwhich, walk five feet any which way and you can get one. But sushi and thai food is another story. Tonight I think we're going to go get some ... read more

No, I am not a jelly donut (...but you may remember those words from Kennedy's speech he gave in West Berlin) however; I did get a "taste" of Berlin this weekend. Okay, that was a terrible pun, I guess I just can't get away from the Valpo way of thinking. Berlin was a lot of fun. I went with friends from Valpo, Neal, Sam and Kelly. There is very little different about the way Berlin looks in comparison with large American cities but it had interesting historical sites such as: the Berlin wall, Checkpoint Charlie, the Victory monument, the Riechstag and other Prussian/Habsbourg monuments. We went to the Checkpoint Charlie Museum, which I definitly recommend if one is interested in that part of German History. Although the Berlin Wall came down 18 years ago it seems ... read more

Howdy! I'm back and refreshed! I was in Germany this past weekend as I have been saying for the last few weeks and it was unexpectedly one of the greatest weekends yet, just in terms of learning about a new place. I went with three girls who I don't usually do too much stuff with, so that was a little exciting! We left late on a Thursday night to spend the night in London Luton Airport (as of now, I've been in all of the London Airports!) We spent the night there, well, technically it only ended up being a couple of hours of sleeping, because we got there so late and we could check in at 4 am. It was the best night I've ever spent in an airport. Basically because I was able to ... read more

Berlin is fantastic. I am really enjoying this city. Before I came, I wasn't sure if I'd like it all that much. I had this gloomy, graffiti-filled image in my head, and I thought that the city might be a bit depressing. And the thing is, it is rainy and there is a lot of graffiti, but it's really a lovelly place to be. Nicholas and I had the big apartment all to ourselves this past weekend because his host mom was out of town because of a party for her just-married daughter. It was great having free reign of this huge downtown appartment, and I've decided that at some point in my life (granted I have the funds) I will live in an appartment like this. I love the old, ornate ceilings, wood floors and ... read more
