With some much communication now easily possible due to the greatness that is The Internet, sometimes it feels like I never left home. However, all this communication takes time, and more and more the poor blog seems to be getting neglected. Tonight is no exception. By the time I'd finished reading and responding to all my e-mails (and the Scouting ones have picked up again now that the Christmas holidays are over), answered all my FaceBook messages (the new internet time-eating demon) and done a quick perusal of the top stories on CBC, my hour if internet is pretty much spent. Such is the case tonight. ***Let's try this again*** So, as I was typing last night after wasting my time doing the above things, the computer very rudely restarted itself (even though I SWEAR I ... read more

In Berlin safe and sound! My eyes are heavy from the lack of sleep, and my head is stuffy from my on-coming cold, but I dont really care because I'm finally here. Right nolw I'm in the computer lab of nicholas' school while he's in class; it'll definitely be nice to have internet access when I need it even though I have to get used to yet ANOTHER foreign keyboard. From what I've seen of Berlin so far (which is not much), it seems like a really interesting city. The area where Nicholas lives has a lot of good shopping, food and art gallaries, so I'm set. Everything seems so much more modern in Germany than in France. In France, even when they're trying to make something look modern, it just ends up looking like a ... read more

Hoooonestly I've been on the internet for ages already, so this is going to be short. I've uploaded a ton of photos from this WONDERFUL Berlin walking tour that Derek and I took today. Our guide was so animated and super knowledgable, it was excellent! If you're coming to Berlin, we recommend Brewer's Berlin English Walking Tours, and ask for Barnaby because he's great!!! Not only did he show us the main sights, but he taught me so much about the history of the city which I really appreciated. Now I finally understand the whole East and West Berlin thing properly. I'm really pleased. Most of the info from the tour is generally summed up in the picture captions, so be sure to check them out. Tomorrow Derek and I are moving hostels from Globetrotter Odyssey, ... read more

my trip to berlin with my roommate and my friend sarah was a whirlwind tour, for sure, but we saw an incredible amount in such a short time. we arrived last friday at noon, and begin our long return sunday at noon as well. since we had to switch from charles de gaulle to orly in paris, here was the order of how we returned to montpellier: s-bahn, bus, plane, bus, plane, shuttle bus, tram, bus. we got along just fine without knowing any german, although we forgot the phrase "i am waiting for my boyfriend/husband" which we had learned in case of encounters with strangers. we realized we didn't know how to say please, so of course we felt like rude americans. my speaking was ridiculous. i couldn't stick to english because without trying all ... read more

It seems like the cold and flu season as finally caught up with us--or maybe we just caught up with it. Last night the thin walls of our hostel in Berlin echoed with the sick hacking of Derek, my roomates, and other people in other rooms and on other floors. Everyone on the street and in the stores is riding themselves of phelm, and nooooo one is covering their noses or mouths. Derek just coughed. So did the girl beside me. It's only a matter of time before I succumb too..... Ahh! Well, Nelly Furtado was pretty fun. She puts on a big show, and it's kind of fun to think that someone who once walked the same halls as me, had the same teachers and musical training (Sandy King, haha) as me, and sat in ... read more

When deciding whether or not to take a trip to Berlin, the thought that I had "done" Germany already definitely came to mind more than once. Spending a week in Munich last semester had made me an expert on schnitzel, sausage, Burger King (strangely, a German staple), and ordering pastries in Deutsch. Much to my surprise, Munich had in no way prepared me for Berlin, as the two cities could not have been more different. In fact, Berlin remains completely separated from any of the European cities I have encountered so far. In some strange way, Berlin feels more American than European - a sprawling metropolis of diverse modern architectural features and wide traffic-filled avenues. If Berlin must be compared to any city - although any comparison trivializes the strangeness of the city - I would ... read more

Ok, so this isn't exactly during my round the world trip but I have just come back from a fantastic weekend in Berlin, and this will give me a chance to try writing a real blog with photos and things. So here goes: Arrival Up at stupid o'clock (2.30am) to get to stansted in time for our 6.30 flight. Thankfully, thursday's snow had abated enough for the airport to be running smoothly again. Unfortunately, unforseen engineering works meant that the stansted express was delayed. So we arrived at the airport 5 minutes before the check in closed, and 45 minutes before our flight was due to leave! Luckily, everyone at ryanair was extremely helpful and we got to the departure gate with enough time to get comfortably settled on the plane. We arrived at Berlin Schonfeld ... read more
