Right now we are on the train to London. Since our last update we returned our rental car to Stirling and took the train to Edinburgh. In Edinburgh we visited the castle and did some shopping along the Royal Mile. Our next stop was York back in jolly old England. York is famous for its Minster, its Castle Museum where there is a Victorian street set up inside the museum, and its shopping street known as the Shambles. York is also the most haunted city in Europe so we took in an evening ghost walk. EEK! We met a couple at our b&b who live in Halifax and he works with Caroline McGarry!! Small world! Next stop: London! ... read more
This update will be short since I am typing on my phone and it is really quite awkward. Since our last update, we took a day long tour of the Cotswold area of England. Lots of really cute villages that seem to be untouched for the last 300 years. We spent the night in Coventry and saw a cool bombed out cathedral before making our way to Scotland to pick up our car. That night we drove to Pitlochry on some narrow winding roads. The next morning started wth a Scottish breakfast c/w haggis and blood pudding followed by a tour of Scotland's smallest distillary and wee dram o' whisky. We than took even narrower and windier roads through the highlands seeing lots of lochs but no monsters eventually arriving in Oban. Phil is getting pretty ... read more
We made it. After 2 flights and 1 bus and 0 sleep, we finally arrived in Bath at 11:00 am. With no hotel to check into yet, we stored our bags and set off to see the sights. We visited the Bath Abby and the Royal Crescent and Royal Circus (previously only seen in our architecture books) The Royal Crescent is also one of Johnny Depp's homes! We also took a walking tour sponsored by the City of Bath (free!) to get some of the history of the area. After a good night's sleep, we got up early Monday morning and caught a bus tour to Stonehenge, Avebury Stone Circles (bigger than Stonehenge), and 2 small quaint villages - Lacock and Castle Coombe. Pride and Prejudice was filmed in Lacock. Tomorrow we are taking another bus ... read more
Hello again. We arrived back home on Sunday night in Calgary after a few more whirlwind days in France. On Thursday, we had our second Paris museum day. We checked out Saint Chappelle church which is another Gothic cathedral with soaring stained glass windows that is just a few blocks from Notre Dame. We hit the metro again and went to the Picasso Museum and the Centre Pompidou which was closed because of a union strike. So we couldn't go in and ride on the famous escalator but it wasn't too much of a loss. After that, we went to the Institute de Monde Arab which is a really funky building of modern Middle Eastern architecture with a museum of ancient Arab history inside. On Friday, we got on the train to Caen to visit the ... read more
Bonjour! We arrived in Paris yesterday afternoon after a long train ride from Nice. It was a pretty posh high speed train and we had first class tickets so the ride was pretty good but 6 hours with limited leg room is still a long time. This morning we started out at Notre Dame. We were among the first in line but the guy running the place decided to open a half hour late so we still ended up standing in line. Oh well..the view from the top was worth it (420 steps this time) We also checked out the gargoyles and the giant bell on top that weighs 15 tonnes...it takes 16 Quasimodos to ring it. Next we hit the Musee D'Orsay which has all the Impressionist stuff. This museum was so great and it ... read more
So it is true. Nice is nice....this keyboard is a little tricky though. I have to use the Dave Ackerman typing because qll of the keys are in different spots. Okay... so we arrived in Nice on Saturday night and took one look out of our balcony window and loved the place. We have q view of the Meditteranean sea on one side and the Chanel store on the other. We picked up breakfast at Nice;s most famous bakery and it was so yummy that we went back again for lunch and dessert! We took the train yesterday to Monaco to look at how the rich people live: quite well. Their yachts are huge and we got to lose 10 euros at the casino before they figured out that we are not dressed well enough to ... read more
Ciao! We're now in the Cinque Terre. This is a national park in Italy along the Ligurian sea. It's made up of 5 villages with hiking paths connecting them. We arrived last night and had a nice dinner but we couldn't see much of the view because it was too dark. This morning, we got up early and hit the hiking paths. After a few hours along an incredibly scenic path that winds along the sea, we arrived in the next town over. It has beautiful beaches so we spent the afternoon playing in the sand and waves. Phil ate quite a bit of sea water while riding the waves, so we picked up something to drink and then got on the train to the village on the other end of the 5 villages. From here, ... read more
Hello! We have been in Rome for 2 days now and we have packed as much as we could into both of them. Yesterday, we began the day by trying to figure out where the breakfast was at the bed and breakfast. Eventually, it showed up and we were able to get out the door a little later than we hoped. We arrived at the Colloseum where there was a bit of a line forming but we made it to the ticket counter within about 15 minutes. We took the guided tour which was a little more of a history lesson than a tour. It turns out the building is a circle of seats....not to much to tour. It was still pretty interesting and we spent a few hours checking it out. After some lunch, we ... read more
Hello everybody! We are enjoying our time in Florence. Last night we saw the David and some other Michelangelo works that were just amazing. I dont know how you take a big chunk of stone and turn it into a master piece but it is definitely beautiful to look at. This morning we hit the Ufizzi gallery at 9:00 and we didn't finish there until nearly 1:30 (Phil needed a little coffee break in the middle...cafe americano here is bellissimo!) They had roman sculptures and Raphaels and Michelangelos. Just when you thought you were done, there was a whole exhibit on Da Vinci's work shop and a room of Caravaggios. After the museum, we grabbed a picnic lunch in the only bit of greenspace that we've found in Florence and then headed over to Ponte Veccio. ... read more
Ciao! Since Vienna, we took the train to Salzburg for a day in town of "The Sound of Music." The hills really are alive here and the buses seem to all follow a route that does not match the map....but oh well. We visited Mozartplatz where there was a big carnival going on so the square was packed. We had the best dinner ever at a small restaurant overlooking the cathedral here...cabbage rolls..yum! Early the next morning, we caught the train to Venice (which was a little confusing since halfway through we had to catch a bus to get around some construction)...but we made it on time to catch our next train. Venice was packed with tourists when we got in at 2:00 PM. We dropped our bags and headed down to San Marco Square where ... read more
