Finland was a province and then a grand duchy under Sweden from the 12th to the 19th centuries and an autonomous grand duchy of Russia after 1809. It won its complete independence in 1917. During World War II, it was able to successfully defend its freedom and resist invasions by the Soviet Union - albeit with some loss of territory. In the subsequent half century, the Finns made a remarkable transformation from a farm/forest economy to a diversified modern industrial economy; per capita income is now on par with Western Europe. As a member of the European Union, Finland was the only Nordic state to join the euro system at its initiation in January 1999. To be updated

We can’t believe our good luck! Another beautiful day with the temperature up around 27 degrees again. We hadn’t made any arrangements for a formal tour and once again decided to do our own thing. We left the ship wearing hot weather gear and set off for the Centre, as indicated by the map and the road signs. I soon determined a different route and we found ourselves wandering through the outskirts of what is a really attractive city. We needed a stop for a drink, but as Helsinki doesn’t come to life until 11:00, this proved difficult. We did find [View Full Entry]

21:48 We parrallel parked in the harbour around 09:00 this morning we had a still fustrating time trying to get breakfast...(american and Italians need manners LOL). We started at the City Highlight tour at 10:15. Helsinki is a very used lokking city but still beatuiful and full of old history. Our first stop was at the The major Lutheren Church in the city as well touring the open market near the Blatic sea. They sold a variety of fresh fruit and veggies and an amazing variety of little trinkets and handmade goods. Then we were off again to see more of [View Full Entry]

Countless lakes, dense forests, moose, fireweed, and endless hours of daylight, it could be Alaska, but it's Finland. The pristine countryside of Finland was a feast for the eyes and the soul. Our 5 days in the remote woodlands and lakes of the Lakeland region were wonderful. The weather was glorious and the time spent with good friends was precious. Picking wild strawberries and blueberries, looking for mushrooms, rowing on the lake, walking in the woods, playing with the children, and exploring the nearby town of Savonlinna were some of our main activities. We were able to experience [View Full Entry]

Bisneksiin Europe » Finland » Uusimaa » Helsinki
Heräsin aamulla ajoissa eli kuudelta. Lähdin liikkeelle kahdeksalta. Taksikuski on asiallinen ja kyyti maksoi 6,5 euroa. Koska lento oli ylibuukattu, minut laitettiin Finnairin silver plus -asiakkaanna bisnesluokkaan. Tulipa koettua sekin. Juotavaa ja syötävää riitti ja puolivälissä matkaa taisin onnistua torkahtamaankin. [View Full Entry]

I left on the 24th, trying to catch glimpses of the US-Spain confederations cup soccer game - I became a soccer fan in Burkina - not because the sport is inherently beautiful or divine or any other nonsense like that but simply because there was no other game in town - if I was going to talk about sports with my Burkina friends (and I was going to talk about sports - interminably or so Tyeliah would have you believe) I was going to be talking about soccer - so I had been following the US team's recent exploits and managed [View Full Entry]

Temppeliaukio Church

After our awesome night on the boat, we had arrived in another country.....Finland. We drove to the campsite called Rastila and stayed there for 2 nights in a little cabin. Once again, there were tons of kids for me to play with. 1 night I played with a boy from Sweden and the next night a boy from Holland while daddy drank wine and relaxed with the parents. The first day we took a short train ride to the city. We went on a boat ride and walked all over seeing some neat looking buildings. My favorite place was the Ice [View Full Entry]
