Finland was a province and then a grand duchy under Sweden from the 12th to the 19th centuries and an autonomous grand duchy of Russia after 1809. It won its complete independence in 1917. During World War II, it was able to successfully defend its freedom and resist invasions by the Soviet Union - albeit with some loss of territory. In the subsequent half century, the Finns made a remarkable transformation from a farm/forest economy to a diversified modern industrial economy; per capita income is now on par with Western Europe. As a member of the European Union, Finland was the only Nordic state to join the euro system at its initiation in January 1999. To be updated

Day 19 - Friday, June 19, 2009 - Harjattula, Finland Most of our Elderhostel group of 23 are rather sad that we didn't have another day in this lovely setting. But we are also eager to go to Helsinki, the capital of Finland. So it is with mixed feelings that we leave this lovely spot of wild floweres, forests along the Baltic Sea. These past few days we have been blessed with the bluest of skies and purest of white billowing clouds - the sky of Finland that is reflected in their flag! We got off the expressway around 11:30am and [View Full Entry]

Day 18 - Thursday, June 18, 2009 - Turku, Finland After breakfast in the school dining room we embarked on an all day excursion. As we passed through the edge of Turku (pronouced tour-kooo) with the emphasis (as for all Finnish words) always on the first syllable) the "r" is rolled, and they they strecth out the vowels. Everyone is the area seems so proud of their city; they speak of it so lovingly. We passed an immense shipyard where the largest cruise ship in the world is being built! We could see it from the highway and the ship appeared [View Full Entry]

Wednesday, June 17, 2009 - Turku, Finland We arrivied at the harbor in Turku at 7:00am without any breakfast on the ship. We were hoping for coffee and a roll but no time. We managed to get our luggage on the elevator, then down the gangway and then a long walk through the terminal to our waiting bus. Our new site coordinator, Heikki Toimi, was at the bus to welcome us. The drive to the school took about 30 minutes. We will be staying at the Finnish folkschool named Paasikivi Opisto located in the community of Harjattulantie. In addition to [View Full Entry]

Like all great travelers, I have seen more than I remember, and remember more than I have seen. - Benjamin Disraeli June 17, 2009, Wednesday, Tallinn City Camping, Tallinn, Estonia, to the ferry to Rastila Camping, Helsinki, Finland. We found our way down into the city of Tallinn and out to the docks to the Silja Ferry. The ride on the boat to Helsinki was just two hours. Driving off the ferry in a new city and being directed off the pier… things get confusing…which way to turn? This is the time to trust our GPS, and “Matilda” cam [View Full Entry]

Well its the night weve been dreading. The airport buses stop running at midnight and our flight doesnt leave till five-ish. So its midnight and were here, waiting. Airports are not fun places at this time of night, if ever. Were flying to Warsaw, which were looking forward to. Theres a two day itinery we plan to follow which we found. Supposedly the hostel we are going to has free tea which excites us since the tea here has been poor at best. Today we spent the day in Helsinki, wandering and trying to avoid the icey wind. Its been quite [View Full Entry]

We dont have long so this will be very brief! We are in Helsinki, Finland. We arrived here today by BOAT! We crossed here overnight from Stockholm which was awesome and very exciting! There were pretty cocktails and beds that came out of the walls. We had our own little cabin which was great fun. We also found koppaberg in duty free for silly cheap prices and brought enough to last us till Poland. There were new flavours, peach, sweet apple, and others which were really nice. The hostel we are stopping in has a sauna, yet does not offer breakfast [View Full Entry]

It was a triumph of a day as Jenn and I managed to tour all of Helsinki and eat a reindeer lunch for a grand sum of 6 euro, respectively. We bought a 6,80 euro all day transportation pass for 2,50 euro and nixed the excessive kilometers of rambling. We visited: the Temppeliaukio Rock Church (looks like a UFO!), the Senate Square and Lutheran St. Nicholas Cathedral (looks like a cake!), the red-tented market square, Russian Orthodox Uspenski Cathedral, walked the Esplanade, and then made our way up to the Sibellus park. As mentioned before, we ate reindeer casserole for lunch [View Full Entry]

While travelling, a plan for me is merely a sort of a sketch in which i rarely stick to, rather than a dogma. But boy, oh boy, do i love to spend my days (and nights) planning my trips? In my darkest moments it keeps me sane by keeping the dream alive. It's that little guy on my shoulder telling me "don't waste your money in watering holes... or else you'll get stuck in this rat race". It's a reason to wake up in the morning. Every time i find it difficult to rationalize to myself, why i'm going for eight [View Full Entry]

Blogi toimii ja rinkka on pakattu. Sitten vain odotellaan huomista aamua. Lentoreitti on Hki-Amsterdam-Panama-Managua. Sadekausi on alkanut Väli-Amerikassa. Se vähän pohdituttaa, että kuinka paljon siellä nyt sitten sataa. Ainakaan muut matkablogilaiset eivät ole sitä valitelleet. No on siellä ainakin lämmintä. [View Full Entry]
